Surprised there's not been a thread about this

It's bound to be massive.

Anyone else looking forward to it?

My oldest son is. He has now watched the movies but is exited to see something ‘first time around’ and since it’s meant to be the original books. As one who was around the first time, I’d rather have had something all new. Maybe ‘Vernon: The Rise of Dursley’ or ‘Entertaining with Petunia’. But I’m looking forward to maybe seeing new book-moments on screen at last.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 14/04/2023 22:28

There has been a couple of threads.

Feels like JKR might see this as a do-over for the films and a chance to do away with the weird credibility Radcliffe and Watson are assumed to have due to their previous involvement.

a fresh start hopefully.

Rainbowshit · 14/04/2023 22:30

I'm so looking forward to it

Botw1 · 14/04/2023 22:43

I had a quick look bit couldn't see any

The article I read was already highlighting the controversy of JKR 'anti trans' views

Hope they can manage to concentrate on the story.

I am going to post my fantasy adult cast here, whilst acknowledging that it will be very difficult to step into the shoes of many of the films cast, especially Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith and Robbie Coltrane AND that I have too much time on my hands. Some of this is already posted on the feminist board.

Simon Farnaby as Nearly Headless Nick
James Acaster as Peeves
Nish Kumar as Hagrid
Iwan Rheon as Remus
Hans Matheson as Sirius
Jim Howick as Peter Pettigrew
Chris Oliver as Lucius Malfoy
Sophie Okendo as Narcissa Malfoy
Katy Wix as Dolores Umbridge
Lolly Adefope as Rita Skeeter.
Chris Ecclestone as Dumbledore
Adrian Edmondson as Professor Binns
James McAvoy as Snape (people seem intent on casting Adam Driver because he has a similar hair cut. Good God.)
Daisy May Cooper as Aunt Petunia
Daniel Mays as Vernon Dursley
Helen Mirren as McGonnagle
Sophie Turner as Lily Potter
Lydia West as Tonks
Meera Syal as Professor Sprout
Arthur Darvill as Arthur Weasly
Charlotte Richie as Molly
Thandiwe Newton as Bellatrix
Cillian Murphy as Voldemort
Simon Pegg as Gilderoy Lockhart.
Mackenzie Crook as Filch

Cast whatever kids you want - but strong yes for Hermione being a black girl as in Cursed Child.

Weird credibility?

Botw1 · 14/04/2023 22:54

Do you think they'll stick to a mostly British cast?

Hopefully they'll get the ages of the adults a bit better?

OP posts:
blubberball · 14/04/2023 22:58

Russell Brand would be a good peeves.

Overall, I think that the cast is going to be much more diverse.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 14/04/2023 22:58

YeahOkWhatever · 14/04/2023 22:49

Weird credibility?

Guessing it's about people claiming to believe Harry Potter really belongs to the actors rather than JK. Seen that a few times from people who don't agree with her, though I'm never sure if they actually believe it. It's a cope.

They're also still getting benefit from being the faces of Harry Potter, I think, despite pushing middle age now. No reason why that should continue. I saw them described on twitter as lottery winners, which I thought was clever. Neither of them can act much, anyway.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 14/04/2023 23:14

Yeah, they are famous due to being cast as children into a film adaptation of a really popular series of books.

they are treated as if they actually ARE Harry and Hermione even as adults. They are just average actors, I've no idea why their views and general comings and goings are of any interest to anyone any more than any other average actors.

Radcliffe in particular seems to be fighting obscurity purely by setting himself against JKR.

Botw1 · 14/04/2023 23:17

I dont mind DR as an actor and wasn't aware he had said anything else against JKR.

I doubt any of them will get a cameo which is a shame I suppose.

Maybe some of the rest of the original cast will ?

Do they claim this? Watson perhaps not so much, but Radcliffe has had plenty roles which have moved away from HP world, with some critical acclaim. Think it's more HP fans that give out this so-called credibility, rather than the actors themselves.

If DR wants to call JKR out on whatever she might be saying then he can do that if he wants. He doesn't "owe" her anything.
Also he seems like a fairly grounded individual given the ridiculous level of fame that being in those films landed him with. Always a good talk show guest whenever I've seen him, honest and quite funny.

That’s going to make for a few cringeworthy moments if they use the plot line of Hermione discovering that Hogwarts and the Wizarding world in general is supported by house elf slaves and Ron tells her it’s nothing to get upset about and the elves are happy with the status quo.

I would love Olivia Coleman to be Umbridge but I am also actually hoping they will go with a relatively unknown cast otherwise it's just a longer version of the films.

if not though
Simon Callow as dumbledore
Suranne Jones as McGonnagle
Kit Harrington as Sirius
Nicholas Hoult - snape

Yes it is - as is Draco calling her a filthy mudblood. I like that cringe. It's raw and feels true to life and it's indicative of deeply pervasive racism in society.

But reader, she married him... maybe Ron is the Prince Harry of the whole thing... 🤔 his eyes opened to the deeply anti- elvish ways of the wizard ingredients world by the love of a good woman.

(This might be a little tongue in cheek)

After the disappointment of the films, hopefully this will closely follow the source material

Alison Steadman as McGonogal

Snapespeare · 15/04/2023 05:25

apologies for cross pollination (also posted on Fem board) this is my rationale for James McAvoy as Snape- his enunciation as Cyrano was paced and Rickmanesque (albeit in his home accent, couldn't Snape be a scot?) His longing for Roxanne, his movement when duelling and his anger.

Pop him in a wig and call him Severus!

Suranne Jones as McGonnagle is lovely - I am a huge fan. I wonder if she might be Trelawney?

He’s awkward and really boring on talk shows I’ve seen him on.

Looking forward to the series and I’m interested as to whether they cast known actors or not. Hoping for people who aren’t so eager to give away women’s rights and damage children. Privileged and ignorant isn’t a good mix.

Good to see JK is an exec producer.

AutumnCrow · 15/04/2023 05:53

One of the most bonkers things I saw on Twitter during all the faux shock-horror about JKR supporting women and girls was the determination of a section of Harry Potter fans to henceforth identify the author as being Daniel Radcliffe.

It says a lot about their relationship with material reality I suppose.

Oddly, Radcliffe let this new style of fandom roll his way, and as far as I'm aware he didn't challenge any of the unjustified venom being directed at JKR or his supposed neo-authorship of the books. He is an intellectual twerp, a piss poor actor and a wittering coward and I'll be pleased to see another actor 'become' Harry Potter in the public consciousness. Ditto Emma Watson and Hermione.
