Surprised there's not been a thread about this

It's bound to be massive.

Anyone else looking forward to it?

Daniel Mays as Hagrid maybe ?

BlueAndGreen89 · 15/04/2023 12:12

I’m really ready for some new faces and excited to watch this.
Book Ginny deserves to be shown in her true glory. Ron deserves to be shown as the great character he is, not some wimpy sidekick.
Agreed that the older cast will be much harder to find. Alan Rickman and Robbie Coltrane are hugely difficult acts to follow.

I would love Olivia Coleman to be Umbridge but I am also actually hoping they will go with a relatively unknown cast otherwise it's just a longer version of the films.

if not though
Simon Callow as dumbledore
Suranne Jones as McGonnagle
Kit Harrington as Sirius
Nicholas Hoult - snape

I am very much having A Moment contemplating Kit Harington as Sirius Blush

Botw1 · 15/04/2023 12:50

Wonder how much pressure they will be under to make one of the characters trans

In the name of 'representation'

Loving some of these suggestions. Also very much here for Nicholas Hoult as Snape.

What about Jason Watkins for Dumbledore. I love him in everything.

Kanaloa · 15/04/2023 13:02

I thought it would be cool to have Maggie Smith make a cameo - maybe as Neville’s quite sharp gran. Never ever would have thought of Kit Harrington or Nicholas Hoult but now they’re in my head they actually seem quite right!

Voldemort will be a difficult part of casting! They’ll maybe need more than one actor? He could (sort of) appear in flashback form/Harry’s dreams even from the first series. But then he’s on the back of Quirrel’s head as a shadow/broken version of himself, then a teenaged version after that.

It will be exciting and interesting to watch from the point of view that you already know if that makes sense? So you’ll be watching already knowing Snape’s true intentions, Dumbledore’s past etc.

Qilin · 15/04/2023 13:05

Can’t she write something new?

She has written lots of new stuff.

But the love for all things Harry Potter is still very strong acorns the world. There is clearly the demand for this, so why wouldn't she want to be involved.

heathspeedwell · 15/04/2023 13:05

I doubt they will make one of the characters trans. The people overseeing this tv series know it will be running for at least a decade and the general public are already getting very, very tired of this particular minority being centred at all times. Look at how Bud has just lost $6 billion.

TheKeatingFive · 15/04/2023 13:07

HBO have signalled a clear desire to not get into the trans drama, so I doubt we'll see trans characters

risefromyourgrave · 15/04/2023 13:09

I know it’s very unlikely, but I’d love Matt Berry as Dumbledore, imagine his voice booming through the Great Hall!

I think Katherine Parkinson would make a good McGonagall, Steve Pemberton a brilliant Slughorn, Kayvan Norvak would make a gorgeous centaur with his long hair.

I agree all of the Horrible Histories/Ghosts actors would be brilliant in it, especially Matthew Baynto as Lockhart and Simon Farnaby as Nearly Headless Nick.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 15/04/2023 13:09

I would think the sort of person who might call for more trans representation in ordinary circumstances will want to avoid sullying themselves with this.

Knullrufs · 15/04/2023 13:11

@risefromyourgrave Matthew Baynton is a genius suggestion for Lockhart. He'd get that weak-chinned yet faintly misogynistic vanity down absolutely perfectly.

Botw1 · 15/04/2023 13:12

Yeah I was mostly being tongue in cheek with the trsns character

I do hope they have a more diverse cast overall and that they keep it mostly British

I presume as executive producer JKR will have some creative control?

SomersetBrie · 15/04/2023 13:34

I am looking forward to this.
I think one issue with the actors cast (more so for the kids than the adults) was that the books were only half written when they were cast. So no one really knew if Ginny would end up with a big part or not, so maybe it was difficult to judge how important it was to cast someone amazing.
Easier later on, for example, I think Luna was really good.
Not excusing bad acting but they had to cast a lot of people - now they will know all the story arcs and take more care.

RocketsMagnificent7 · 15/04/2023 13:45

Michael Fassbender for Voldemort with James McAvoy as Snape.

I'm also loving Ben Barnes for Sirius.

Ade Edmondson for Slughorn?

I'm actually going to get my books out and start from scratch. So much I've forgotten. I need a refresher.

Mogginsthemog · 15/04/2023 13:49

Think a lot of well known actors will swerve this, and the cast will be mainly unknowns. Not a bad thing imo.

Talapia · 15/04/2023 14:56

Matthew Horne Mr Weasley
Jamie Campbell Bower or David Tennant Snape
Michael Sheen Dumbledore
Robert Sheehan Lockhart or Sirius

For the child actors, let's avoid casting from private schools or kids known to the crew etc. Emma Watson was excruciating ....

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 15/04/2023 23:04

Yeah they could do with oozing a bit less privilege this time round.

Botw1 · 15/04/2023 23:06

Was that how they were chosen?

OP posts:
user1477391263 · 16/04/2023 08:50

I’m looking forward to it. The first couple of films felt like an overstuffed liberalization of the books, and the films from no. 3 onwards were mostly “good” rather than amazing. I don’t think that they have quite the beloved status that makes a remake hard to do. And I too would be quite happy to break the Radcliffe/Watson etc. automatic links; they’ve been profoundingly irrritating with regard to The Issue That Must Not Be Named, and neither of them were or are amazing actors.

I hope that they do not allow OTT computer graphics to take over everything and detract from the emotional heart of the film. Too much CG and too little of everything else has become a real issue in modern media content.

MoggyMittens23 · 16/04/2023 09:09

LlynTegid · 15/04/2023 10:03

I don't think it should be made. Much as I think JK Rowling should be supported in her views about protecting women.

There are some films (and tv series and indeed some theatre) that are so of their time or iconic that I would like to see them have something akin to heritage protection and not be remade.

It’s going to be better!

MoggyMittens23 · 16/04/2023 09:10

Snapespeare · 14/04/2023 22:46

I am going to post my fantasy adult cast here, whilst acknowledging that it will be very difficult to step into the shoes of many of the films cast, especially Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith and Robbie Coltrane AND that I have too much time on my hands. Some of this is already posted on the feminist board.

Simon Farnaby as Nearly Headless Nick
James Acaster as Peeves
Nish Kumar as Hagrid
Iwan Rheon as Remus
Hans Matheson as Sirius
Jim Howick as Peter Pettigrew
Chris Oliver as Lucius Malfoy
Sophie Okendo as Narcissa Malfoy
Katy Wix as Dolores Umbridge
Lolly Adefope as Rita Skeeter.
Chris Ecclestone as Dumbledore
Adrian Edmondson as Professor Binns
James McAvoy as Snape (people seem intent on casting Adam Driver because he has a similar hair cut. Good God.)
Daisy May Cooper as Aunt Petunia
Daniel Mays as Vernon Dursley
Helen Mirren as McGonnagle
Sophie Turner as Lily Potter
Lydia West as Tonks
Meera Syal as Professor Sprout
Arthur Darvill as Arthur Weasly
Charlotte Richie as Molly
Thandiwe Newton as Bellatrix
Cillian Murphy as Voldemort
Simon Pegg as Gilderoy Lockhart.
Mackenzie Crook as Filch

Cast whatever kids you want - but strong yes for Hermione being a black girl as in Cursed Child.

Nish Kumar as Hagrid?!! 😂erm, no

I'm delighted at this news, mainly because I'd love to see three child leads who can actually act in the main roles.

So much this - the acting in the movies is dreadful.

Also - it's the forbidden forest, it alliterates, wtf they changed it to something so much worse I've no idea. 🙄🙄🙄
