Surprised there's not been a thread about this

It's bound to be massive.

Anyone else looking forward to it?

One of the most bonkers things I saw on Twitter during all the faux shock-horror about JKR supporting women and girls was the determination of a section of Harry Potter fans to henceforth identify the author as being Daniel Radcliffe.

It says a lot about their relationship with material reality I suppose.

Oddly, Radcliffe let this new style of fandom roll his way, and as far as I'm aware he didn't challenge any of the unjustified venom being directed at JKR or his supposed neo-authorship of the books. He is an intellectual twerp, a piss poor actor and a wittering coward and I'll be pleased to see another actor 'become' Harry Potter in the public consciousness. Ditto Emma Watson and Hermione.

It seems he does know what a woman is afterall though, as his GF is pregnant. She must be one of those old style women, the ones with a womb. 😏

I am going to post my fantasy adult cast here, whilst acknowledging that it will be very difficult to step into the shoes of many of the films cast, especially Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith and Robbie Coltrane AND that I have too much time on my hands. Some of this is already posted on the feminist board.

Simon Farnaby as Nearly Headless Nick
James Acaster as Peeves
Nish Kumar as Hagrid
Iwan Rheon as Remus
Hans Matheson as Sirius
Jim Howick as Peter Pettigrew
Chris Oliver as Lucius Malfoy
Sophie Okendo as Narcissa Malfoy
Katy Wix as Dolores Umbridge
Lolly Adefope as Rita Skeeter.
Chris Ecclestone as Dumbledore
Adrian Edmondson as Professor Binns
James McAvoy as Snape (people seem intent on casting Adam Driver because he has a similar hair cut. Good God.)
Daisy May Cooper as Aunt Petunia
Daniel Mays as Vernon Dursley
Helen Mirren as McGonnagle
Sophie Turner as Lily Potter
Lydia West as Tonks
Meera Syal as Professor Sprout
Arthur Darvill as Arthur Weasly
Charlotte Richie as Molly
Thandiwe Newton as Bellatrix
Cillian Murphy as Voldemort
Simon Pegg as Gilderoy Lockhart.
Mackenzie Crook as Filch

Cast whatever kids you want - but strong yes for Hermione being a black girl as in Cursed Child.

There’s no way either James Acaster or Nish Kumar would sully themselves with the dreadful JKR’s work on their CV, TWAW don’t you know?! They probably think the new series will literally cause a trans genocide.

CarlaTheGnome · 15/04/2023 07:19

I must have been living under a rock because this is the first I've heard of a new series. I really hope most of the cast consists of relative unknowns. It can only be a good thing to distance the stories from DR, EW and the rest, and their horrible attitude towards JKR.

Kanaloa · 15/04/2023 07:29

I think it would be great to see some of the storylines properly, a lot was cut out and glossed over in the films. Sometimes I wonder if the movies make entire sense if you didn’t read the books first, because they cut out so much of people’s motivations.

Be great to see Dumbledore too. The actor who played him in the first two films didn’t really get to have any of those big moments and the actor who played him in the later films obviously didn’t understand the character and wasn’t able to play him very well. Dumbledore is an amazing character because he’s so multilayered and as Harry grows up we get to see that. From all knowing mentor to terrifyingly powerful wizard to quite pathetically weak to a flawed and normal person.

Kanaloa · 15/04/2023 07:33

I wonder if it will be tricky with ages though. They will need to make a series a year (more or less) to ensure the kids are round about the proper age at each time. I hope they get Ron’s character right too - the movies for some reason decided Hermione had to be perfect and Ron had to be surplus to requirements!

TheKeatingFive · 15/04/2023 07:50

I'm delighted at this news, mainly because I'd love to see three child leads who can actually act in the main roles.

Qilin · 15/04/2023 08:33

I wonder if some of the old cast, who still talk about HP and are happy to be associated with the wizarding world, may be cast for some of the supporting adult roles.

Perhaps including someone like Tom Felton playing Lucius perhaps.
The Phelps twins still seem involved in all things HP, possibly Matthew Lewis.

It will be hard casting I'd have thought due to how well known the characters are/were as the previous actors, esp the adults. I actually think the child actors, including Harry, Hermione and Ron are probably easier to recast than Snape, Hagrid, Bellatrix, etc.

I guess similar timings as the films, though depending on how many episodes per season it could be hard going.

The early ones will be the Ines that need filming quickest as the children will quickly physically change as they move from 11 into puberty. Whereas with the older teen years it's easier to play ages up and down somewhat.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 15/04/2023 08:35

YeahOkWhatever · 14/04/2023 23:30

Do they claim this? Watson perhaps not so much, but Radcliffe has had plenty roles which have moved away from HP world, with some critical acclaim. Think it's more HP fans that give out this so-called credibility, rather than the actors themselves.

If DR wants to call JKR out on whatever she might be saying then he can do that if he wants. He doesn't "owe" her anything.
Also he seems like a fairly grounded individual given the ridiculous level of fame that being in those films landed him with. Always a good talk show guest whenever I've seen him, honest and quite funny.

Yes, it's the fans. The actors themselves don't have to be the ones making the claims to derive benefit from them.

And the rest of the post is a strawman. Nobody on this thread said DR can't come out with whatever bollocks he likes, though the idea that he has any moral authority to 'call out' is an amusing one. It's just a man talking, no more than that.

The point here is that it's a good thing that his continued association with the role that made him, an association he continues to benefit from, will be weakened by there being another 'face' of it. I don't recall ever seeing him on a talk show so I'll take your word for it, but highlighting further benefits he enjoys because of his lottery win only furthers my point.

ScarlettDarling · 15/04/2023 08:42

Ooh this is so exciting! Where will it be available to watch though?

EsquithGoneAdventuring · 15/04/2023 08:45

They haven’t set themselves against JK or have a horrible attitude towards JK.
They just support trans people to be who they are.

As do the over 135,000 people who have signed the government petition to commit to NOT amending the Equality Act's definition of sex.

Yes, true! It’s tricky because there is a big jump from 11 to about 15/16 where kids change so much.

It will be nice if they stick with the characters from the books. So many characters changed hugely in the films. I actually can’t think of a character who was portrayed as they’d been written. I like a lot of the film portrayals but they’re generally very little like the book characters. For example I like Alan Rickman’s Snape but he’s quite different to the character in the book who does quite a bit of shrieking/getting hysterical over things sometimes. Even Harry is really different.

I think it's being produced by Warner Bros (with JKR as an exec producer) for their HBO Max (or just called Max sometimes I think) steaming service.

It's currently not available in the UK iirr, but I can't imagine this series not being available in the UK so I suspect the streaming service will be expanded to cover the UK or will be available in another service.

Yeah it's so hard with this age group. That's why I'm never too critical of the films not having chosen good leading actors, because it's inevitably such a punt when you're picking 12 year olds. All you can really do is make sure the adults are brilliant.

TheKeatingFive · 15/04/2023 08:54

They haven’t set themselves against JK or have a horrible attitude towards JK. They just support trans people to be who they are.

They've point blank refused to engage with the impact TRA demands have on women's dignity and safety and Dan in particular has consistently tried to silence JKR by suggesting she has no authority to speak on the subject.

Their version of 'supporting trans people to be who they are' cheerleads them in laying claim to sex segregated spaces that don't belong to them. With vulnerable women being the ones who lose out.

Do you know, I was just talking about this the other day! I think we were talking about Abigail Breslin, and my friend had mentioned another child actor I can’t remember now. I think there’s a very different skill set from being a good child actor and being a good actor. I don’t know what it is, but some actors are very good or even exceptional as children and just mediocre/nothing special as adults.

Violetparis · 15/04/2023 08:56

Any of the Horrible Histories/Ghosts cast would be great in this. Agree with another poster who said some actors may be reluctant to get involved due to being associated with JKR.

Snapespeare · 15/04/2023 08:59

@risefromyourgrave "There’s no way either James Acaster or Nish Kumar would sully themselves with the dreadful JKR’s work on their CV, TWAW don’t you know?! They probably think the new series will literally cause a trans genocide"

I made you a story!

Neville swirled his cup tentatively and willed the tea leaves to form something wonderful. He didn't want much. He had friends now and his Grandmother had been quite pleased with his mock OWLS results. Divination had always been a bit of a problem for him. It was.... unpredictable. You knew where you were with plants.

Professor Trelawney neared his desk. Padma and Pavrati gazed at her adoringly as she wafted towards them, her mismatched robes gently floating in time with her gliding step.

'Neville!' Hermione hissed, 'come on! Turn it over!' He startled at her voice and turned the teacup quickly onto its saucer, draining the dark brown tea and gazed into the cup as Trelawney approached.

'Now then child, what do you see?' Trelawney fixed him with a stare, her owlish eyes magnified by her glasses.

'A...a sickle?' Neville stuttered.

'VERY good Neville! and is there anything else?'

Neville felt his palms moisten. He scrutinised the tea leaf patterns in his cup carefully, his nose just inches away from the haphazard flecks of tea.

'Ummm. Is it....? Is it a RAT? I think its holding something...'

Trelawney leant towards him encouragingly, 'Not quite dear, try again.'

Neville looked hopelessly at Hermione - 'it's not a rat...it's.. its...'

Hermiones hand shot up. Trelawney sighed with resignation, 'yes Miss Granger?'

' it's a Ferret Miss! A Ferret, holding a nut, travelling backwards'

Neville flushed. Of course. A reverse ferret motivated by wizard gold and personal pride.

It was staring him in the face. Why hadn't he seen it all along?

Nevilles shoulders slumped. His Grandmother would be disappointed.

DonnaRix · 15/04/2023 08:59

Emma Watson is a dreadful actress. My 9 year old was watching Goblet of Fire last night and she truly is terrible.

UthredofBattenberg · 15/04/2023 09:00

I absolutely cannot wait! I've wanted a TV series for a long time. I love the films, but a lot of the book content is skipped over.

I'd like a series per book, with an episode dedicated to a chapter or two.

HBO have huge budgets so I'm hoping this will be a massive series.

Love some of the casting ideas above, fantastic suggestions.

The only thing I think I would like to see is Ade Edmondson as Peeves, such a shame we never got to see Rik Mayall in the finished film...

TheKeatingFive · 15/04/2023 09:01

Yes Emma is absolutely excruciating. The kid who played Ginny Weasley was also pretty bad, if I recall correctly.

Sturnip · 15/04/2023 09:02

Can’t she write something new?

I imagine this will be stretched out over 7 or 8 seasons but anyone vaguely interested will likely have already read the books, watched the movies and will know the overall plot very well.

I quite like the Harry Potter books and might have watched a spin off, but this sounds really pointless.

DonnaRix · 15/04/2023 09:02

Yes. Ginny in the books was awesome. Film Ginny was a wet blanket.

I agree. Maybe the solution is just to put all the auditionees names in a hat and pick them out haha. They could call it a Sorting Hat!

She has written lots of new stuff?

People want to see a decent screen adaptation of the Harry Potter books. If you dont want to, don't watch it?
