This is going to infuriate a lot of people but I think we are a nation of fools.

does anyone else really not care? I’m surprised given what’s happening in France there isn’t more opposition to the coronation.

It certainly seems like a lot of money to spend for a man in a dress to put a hat on a wealthy German.

Him having a crown stuck on his bonce at great expense to the tax payer isn't going to make any difference to me or 99% of other people in this country really is it ?

I won't be doing any coronation stuff, looking forward to a day off hopefully in the sun. Trying to decide if touristy/attraction stuff will be quieter than normal or busier than normal, ideally I'd like to go to the beach or something if it's nice weather but not if it will be over run with other people avoiding the coronation.

I'm assuming that most places will be quieter than usual on the Saturday, whilst the actual event is on, as a high percentage of people will watch. But I imagine the Sunday and especially Monday will be really busy at local attractions if the weather is good. Most other bank holidays fall in school holidays so a proportion of people go away, but as this is just a long weekend I reckon our local beach, parks etc will be packed if the sun shows its face as everyone will be looking to get out of the house by the Monday but the break isn't really long enough for a proper holiday.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 10/04/2023 17:44

My mum keeps saying it’s just a bit boring compared to the last one when we had a young queen. It’s difficult to get excited about an old man.
It’s always good to have a street party though.

Fluffy40 · 10/04/2023 17:45

Wouldn’t it be nice of them to give up just one royal residence? It could be re purposed and used by ex soldiers etc.

Capitulatingpanda · 10/04/2023 17:45

I don't care about it. There is absolutely nothing special about the royal family that makes them deserving of that kind of attention. I don't work Mondays either so it's not like I'm getting some kind of bonus day off.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2023 17:47

The weather is usually changeable or rain for most of these pageants and jubilees. They were lucky it wasn't too bad for the Queen's funeral that day as a lot of that was outside.
They would have to pay me to camp out to see a coach go past for a glimpse of the big crown!

WeWereInParis · 10/04/2023 17:47

Is it?? Loads of people don't care. And plenty of people who do care wouldn't be infuriated by someone else thinking it was all foolish.

Personally, I'm torn. Generally speaking I'd abolish the monarchy. But I do love history, and republican or not, coronations are big parts of British history. Less so now, but still despite being anti-monarchy, I'm a sucker for the pageantry and the traditions and learning the history of all the various parts. I was the same when the queen died, watching the accession council etc
I know its probably very hypocritical of me, but hey ho.

Sloth66 · 10/04/2023 17:48

I won’t be watching it, I’m not interested.
There wasn’t enough support for a street party on my road either.
it’s a waste of money, and seems totally irrelevant to me. And given the tax dodging, offshore accounts, sealed Wills and money in carrier bags, they aren’t people to look up to.

So what makes him German then? How many generations of pure blood British parentage do you think a person needs to qualify as British? Any thoughts on skin colour, does one have to be a flaxen haired saxon, or descend from the ancient Britons?

First rule of holes, when you're in one stop digging 😉

MavisMcMinty · 10/04/2023 17:52

Yeah, think it was just a light-hearted witticism, @DisquietintheRanks .

2chocolateoranges · 10/04/2023 16:15

I’m Scottish and looking forward to my holiday Monday off, I’ll probably watch some of the Coronation too, it’s a huge part of history in the making.

History in the making, is a meaningless phrase everything is history in the making.

Charles isn't even going to be king that long and will be a minor foot note with many more important things going off.

WeHaveJoy · 10/04/2023 17:55

We are a pathetic nation, and I can't wait til we are rid of the monarchy, and the Tories who rip us off.
There'll be a change, one day.

StripyHorse · 10/04/2023 17:56

missmollygreen · 10/04/2023 16:15

Think what you like.
I bet you are going to still accept the free bank holiday though!

Free bank holiday?!

And how much of tax payers' money is funding this charade? It's not free (despite the fact the RF have more than enough money to pay for it themselves).

DisquietintheRanks · 10/04/2023 17:57

@MavisMcMinty so not racism then? Cause, you know, sounded a bit racist.

Macmeme · 10/04/2023 17:57

Yanbu. I care for the bank holiday and that’s as far as it goes x

Divorcedalongtime · 10/04/2023 17:57

So I’m Scandinavian and live in England since forever, but I don’t care one tiny little bit. I didn’t care about any of the jubilee’s or funerals either.

AgrathaChristie · 10/04/2023 17:57

GettingThereCharleyBear · 10/04/2023 16:15

Most people are indifferent to it. However, the royals have a brilliant PR machine and they’re very good at portraying their forelock tugging subjects as being in a majority 🤷‍♀️.

Agree. You have to admire how the PR have turned Camilla’s image around.

No, won’t be watching his coronation or any other coronation.

rosesinmygarden · 10/04/2023 17:58

I don't care about it.

For me, it means 3 Mondays in a month that I don't get paid for (am self employed). The extra bank holiday just means a loss of income for many people.

tinytemper66 · 10/04/2023 17:58

I am indifferent and nothing will be open to get away from it. Can't go away that weekend and many places will just up the price due to the bloody event.

KnittingNeedles · 10/04/2023 18:01

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 10/04/2023 17:39

It certainly seems like a lot of money to spend for a man in a dress to put a hat on a wealthy German.

This sort of brainless comment comes up every time there is a thread about the Royals.

In what way is Charles German? Because his great great grandfather was Prince Albert, who was German? He was born here, his mother was born here, her mother and father were born here. He is as British as anyone.

The same people who are making these brainless comments about Charles being "German" are the same people up in arms about that lady in waiting asking the black charity worker where she was "really" from. That was clearly racist and xenophobic, thinking that a black person couldn't be British. It's no different from calling Charles German.

Just shows you up as a bit thick.

CordyLines · 10/04/2023 18:04

I cannot understand how they are not mortified and embarrassed going through this cringe inducing event.

To me it is sending out all the wrong signals and saying, "look at us, we are your sovereigns and you must stay there waving, always outside the gate, you peasants!"

So I will be peeping with one eye at the TV to see if they are comfortable engaging in this charade of a spectacle, or are red faced with embarrassment. That's my only interest in it.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 10/04/2023 18:04

@KnittingNeedles well said.

A basic google would confirm the King’s heritage. Embarrassing
