This is going to infuriate a lot of people but I think we are a nation of fools.

does anyone else really not care? I’m surprised given what’s happening in France there isn’t more opposition to the coronation.

I cannot understand how they are not mortified and embarrassed going through this cringe inducing event.

To me it is sending out all the wrong signals and saying, "look at us, we are your sovereigns and you must stay there waving, always outside the gate, you peasants!"

So I will be peeping with one eye at the TV to see if they are comfortable engaging in this charade of a spectacle, or are red faced with embarrassment. That's my only interest in it.

I’m sure there’s a part of them that detests it. Certainly the Queen was known to be an introvert.

However, it’s the job and anyone on their right mind would take it rather than be exiled and ex-communicated.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 10/04/2023 18:07

Anyway not only am I looking forward to it, I’ll be there! Booked the London trip as soon as the date was announced, lovely child-free weekend having a street party and dancing to music and getting sizzled with DH. Much more fun than sitting po-faced in my living room whingeing about ‘German’ people who aren’t even German.

GooglyEyeballs · 10/04/2023 18:08

Yanbu to not care about the coronation but yabu to say everyone who does care are fools.

MasterBeth · 10/04/2023 18:12

I am completely uninterested. I won’t watch it on TV (saw none of the Queens’s funeral either). Just don’t get why I should care.

I am also, unrelatedly, a republican. But I think you could be a committed republican and be interested in the nonsense of royalty. I just couldn’t give a fuck.

Heh, I often imagine these events as seen through the eyes of the rest of the world, and marvel/cringe at how idiotic it - and we - must look.

Given that 27 other countries have a monarchy, and our RF attracts huge amounts of tourism, I suspect you’re very wrong.

A number of those country's are quasi fascist rulers.

The tourism angle isn't true people would still visit due to the history of the monarchy, Franch has way more tourists than the UK despite having no monarchy.

We should be past having people who due to a accident of birth are in those roles.

DonnaDonna0 · 10/04/2023 18:32

I know I’ll get slated for this but I’d be interested if it wasn’t Charles and “Queen Camilla” can’t stand the pair of them. Just my personal opinion though.

Think what you like.
I bet you are going to still accept the free bank holiday though!

Of course. If there's a Bank Holiday going I'm going to enjoy it. I'm just going to avoid anything to do with the coronation. Difficult, but I'm going to have a good try.

GanjaDhin · 10/04/2023 18:34

Thanks for the thread. It's actually a relief to know that I'm not alone in thinking this way.

I'm disinterested enough to really not care much either way. I'm not anti monarchy but I'm not pro. I don't know enough to weigh up the pros and cons and it's not something I have any passion about. I think Her Magesty was a fine ambassador. I think Camilla should be accepted as Queen. I hope Harry and Megan get an invite and it all runs smoothly.

There are already 2 bank holidays in May, we don't need another, it just puts the prices up for going away somewhere

pigsDOfly · 10/04/2023 18:43

So much money being spent on one person seems obscene when so many in the country are struggling to pay their bills.

As pp said, he's in this position by accident of birth. But lets not forget that he's also in this position because his, not so distant ancestors, were able to make their great wealth by the suffering of slaves.

And now they take our taxes to pay for their lavish lifestyle.

Can't work up any enthusiasm about any of them if I'm honest.

Didn't watch any of the weddings or the funerals and I shan't be watching the coronation.

Speak for yourself. I'm looking forward to 3 short working weeks in May. Perhaps if you don't work it makes little difference to your life though. Apart from fancy holidays being a bit more expensive.

JessicaBrassica · 10/04/2023 18:52

Total disinterest here. Will take DS out somewhere to distract him from SATs starting the next day.

If it wasn't for the kids being home from school I'd probably work it would be unpaid but my workload is huge and I could use the time.

The jubilee bank holiday just generated stress because it's a day I didn't work.

Mostar · 10/04/2023 18:54

Fluffy40 · 10/04/2023 17:45

Wouldn’t it be nice of them to give up just one royal residence? It could be re purposed and used by ex soldiers etc.

Would be a good way to mark the event, certainly. Never gonna happen though.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 10/04/2023 18:57

@KnittingNeedles i couldn’t careless if he comes from Germany, Australia or the moon. The idea that in 2023 we’re crowning a man to reign over us because of an accident of birth is at my most charitable cringingly embarrassing and at worst dangerous, a bloody affront to democracy.

FeelsLikeALodger · 10/04/2023 19:00

Not interested. I will accept the free bank holiday though as my work is closed and schools also closed. Will not be watching on the telly or doing own event. Just cant warm to Charles and Camilla im afraid. It all shouldve ended when Liz died

StrawberryWater · 10/04/2023 19:01

I couldn’t give a toss about King Chaz and his merry band of dickheads parading around in gold coaches while many in this country are stuck in poverty or going hungry. I think it’s abhorrent and disgusting and I will not be watching.

NotAHouse · 10/04/2023 19:01

I reckon the same people who care are the same twonks who vote Tory. The country - and the world - has gone to hell in a handbasket.

Novella4 · 10/04/2023 19:14

@notahouse
Yep

People either aren't interested or are actively anti monarchy .
I want to know why the MSM doesn't reflect this and why we put up with being force fed pro Windsor propaganda ( with a few notable exceptions )

According to the times there were approx 16000 parties for the queen's jubilee ( you couldn't pay me to endure something like that but anyway )and for Charles' 'let's waste £100 000 000 on a v ordinary aging man - 250 🤣

Mostar · 10/04/2023 19:25

What they should have done is put the coronation as the grande finale at the Royal Variety Performance. Michael McIntyre, Mumford and Sons, a conjurer, a ventriloquist, some other C-listers, then the performance art thing with the bloke in the dress putting the big gold hat on the King's head. Then a quick bit of stand up (or improv) from His Kingness, and as the audience pisses themselves laughing, ticker tape and balloons fall down from the ceiling as a metaphor for blessings from The Almighty. Play out with Ed Sheeran doing a medley of God Save the King, Clocks by Coldplay and Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. That would work.

AuntieMarys · 10/04/2023 19:33

Other European monarchies do not have coronations

tillytoodles1 · 10/04/2023 19:45

I'll watch some of it, but like all royal occasions it will go on for hours, starting with them talking to people in the street. I'll watch the crowning bit, but that will be it.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 10/04/2023 19:47

@TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl why is the alternative to be sitting in your living room?! What an odd comment. I’ll be out enjoying some fresh air somewhere.

Oh and I call total BS on the idea that Charlie isn’t going to enjoy every minute of it - he originally said he was going to have a low key coronation but now he’s going all out. He loves everyone fawning over him - he’s waited 70 years for this crap, he’ll string out as long as he can. 😩
