This is going to infuriate a lot of people but I think we are a nation of fools.

does anyone else really not care? I’m surprised given what’s happening in France there isn’t more opposition to the coronation.

I’ve gone from quite liking the royals to being indifferent in the space of a couple of years. I don’t think it’s just the late Queen going but more the state of this country (especially since 2016) and the inertia to challenge anything, while still clinging to the old ideas.

It’s also an obscene amount of money during a cost of living crisis. An out of touch distraction for a poorly governed country.

belikejeff · 10/04/2023 17:10

I won't be watching but am happy for take the extra day off.

Unfortunately the extra day off costs many businesses a small fortune due to double time etc etc

NoTouch · 10/04/2023 17:10

My caring about it extends as far as 1) happy I'm getting an extra day added to my annual leave allowance, 2) will probably see it on the news/telly and think what a load of pomp and ridiculous waste of our money, 3) might casually hide/read/post on a few whingy threads on MN/twitter about it just to wind the royalists up a bit

Frankola · 10/04/2023 17:12

I appreciate the Royal family help tourism etc for the UK and do serve a political purpose. Infact im usually a supporter of the royals. However, I feel a bit ick at the timing of this coronation.

People are struggling to pay household bills, heat their houses and buy food. Yet Charles is using millions of taxpayers money to essentially have a party.

The PP can speak for herself but certainly not all Scottish people. I.know people who are keen Royalists, some anti & some who don't care. Just the same as everywhere else in the country

I know most people I know watched at least some of the jubilee celebrations & I don't know of a single person who didn't watch if not the funeral at least some of the coverage.

I really hate when one person tries to pass of their own views as that of the whole of Scotland

I didn’t try and pass my views as being for the whole of Scotland. You and candle seem to have some issues with reading comprehension.

midsomermurderess · 10/04/2023 17:13

Hugh crowds turned out in Edinburgh to see the Queens coffin in St Giles. This whole ‘the Scots dint give a fuck’ thing is a bit misty eyed.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2023 17:15

The fact that the coronation coach coming back is uncomfortable made me roll my eyes a bit this morning when they had a piece about the procession on the news. Plus that it won't be a long route either.
The fact that people will, willingly , camp out and go and cheer them on always makes me wonder. I know plenty of Royalists, but I don't know anyone going to this. It's also often people who I would assume are not, so it surprises me how much support they do get tbh.

And another one who has trouble with comprehension

Maybe the problem is more with your post when so many people seem to be reading it the same way

EllandRd · 10/04/2023 17:21

No one I know or I give a shiny shit about it. Only the royalists seem to care, the rest of the country wants rid of the monarchy.

SherbetDips · 10/04/2023 17:24

Well done aren’t you special! I’m no fool.

The monarchy is a status symbol that attracts people from all over the world. Tourism keeps the economy going.

if your not interested that’s fine why do you need to be insulting towards people who are interested?

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2023 17:24

Out of all my friends and relatives I'm the only one indifferent to them ( although I was upset about the Queen dying , but only because it brought back memories of my own late parents etc)
Most people seem to like what they stand for rather than the individuals, if that makes sense
King Charles has always been controversial.

Tarantullah · 10/04/2023 17:26

It won't. I've never met anyone in real life who feels that passionately about the monarchy that someone being indifferent or actively disliking them would infuriate or even mildly annoy them. Its hardly am outrageous and uncommon viewpoint.

Loria · 10/04/2023 17:27

Edinburgh is full of English anyway. They wouldn't have got anyone lining up for that coffin in Glasgow even if they'd have painted it orange.

KnittingNeedles · 10/04/2023 17:28

I am one of the Scots who went to Edinburgh to see the coffin arriving and took my kids. Because it is history in the making and something we are unlikely to see in Scotland again in my lifetime.

I feel the same about the coronation - whatever your personal feelings about Charles or the monarchy or the coronation, it's a historical event. Of course i'll be watching.

MrsAvocet · 10/04/2023 17:28

I don't really care either.
I am not sufficiently opposed to any of it to protest or anything but I'm not interested enough to actively participate. If there was a public vote as to whether it should happen on balance I'd probably vote no, but I'm not sure I'd actually care enough to make the journey to the polling station if I'm honest.
If the weather is good we will probably take advantage of it being quiet and go for a bike ride or walk. If it's terrible weather and I'm at home I will probably have the tv on in the background and take a cursory interest in happenings but I won't be going to any events and as I'm retired anyway the extra bank holiday is neither here nor there to me. I am genuinely ambivalent. I can think of things that I would prefer my taxes to be spent on, but also think that there are worse misuses of public money.
If other people want to hang up bunting and have street parties then why not? As long as nobody tries to coerce me to participate it doesn't bother me in the slightest and if it makes people happy then I'm pleased for them.

@Loria we travelled through from Glasgow on the Sunday when the coffin arrived. The train back to Glasgow was absolutely packed, standing room only.

Mostar · 10/04/2023 17:29

The whole thing is a bunch of arse.

There's probably too much 'history in the making' in the world as it is, without this shameful tomfoolery.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2023 17:32

I feel that a referendum on this matter would be in their favour tbh. I know so many different types of people who genuinely think it's best left as it is and also seem to like them.
(I doubt anyone would call a referendum though)

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 10/04/2023 17:35

I won't be doing any coronation stuff, looking forward to a day off hopefully in the sun. Trying to decide if touristy/attraction stuff will be quieter than normal or busier than normal, ideally I'd like to go to the beach or something if it's nice weather but not if it will be over run with other people avoiding the coronation.

Ffsmakeitstop · 10/04/2023 17:36

I only care about the ridiculous cost and the showy privilege. Will they be moving the homeless again so we look like a prosperous country to the rest of the world?
Everyone I know is a royalist except me. I don't cope well with sycophancy.
I will be working on the bank holiday Monday but will get a day off when I choose. So glad I won't be be working on the Saturday so I don't have to hear about it all day.

The actual coronation is on Saturday and the Monday is the Bank Holiday so it could be busy.

Tourism is a silly rationale for having a monarchy. Do tourists ever get to see a royal? No, and neither do the rest of us. My (Irish) best friend travelled round the US for a year and lost count of the times she was asked “what’s the Queen like?” as though we Brits (and Irish!) all had tea with her on a regular basis. Does nobody ever visit France since they beheaded all their royals? It’s the palaces and the pomp they come to see, no reason we can’t continue with all the Changing of the Guard nonsense without an actual monarchy.

No we aren't 'a nation of fools'
