To not care at all about the King’s coronation?

This is going to infuriate a lot of people but I think we are a nation of fools.

does anyone else really not care? I’m surprised given what’s happening in France there isn’t more opposition to the coronation.

I think a lot of people are excited and looking forward to the Coronation. I've been off work but they had a special coronation day today with bunting and fun & games etc. The people moaning about it are just perpetual moaners, if it wasn't the Coronation they'd find something else to moan about.

Over 30% of children are living in poverty in the UK, but please do stop moaning eh? Just so the rest of the country can enjoy going gaga watching an unelected 'anointed' king mince about in a fucking gold carriage with a ridiculous £4billion crown on his napper. The whole charade is morally obscene.

Japanesejazz · 06/05/2023 02:47

I’m hoping enough people will stay at home watching that I can ride my horse on the road without fear of death
And I’m glad for the extra day off

I think it’s sad that nobody cares anymore.
I remember how excited we all were in 1977 for the Silver Jubilee and the celebrations. What a contrast with today’s atmosphere.

Thankfully times change, nobody caring is a start I suppose. Hopefully in the next 40-odd years we’ll have them abolished.

The celebrations will cause people to go out and spend money providing jobs (and keeping people in jobs) and providing tax revenue that can be spent on the poverty stricken children.

I appreciate the fact that we have the institution - it’s less about the individuals who are a drop in the ocean in the overall context. That every monarch has been crowned in Westminster Abbey since 1066 is an amazing piece of continuity. I like that fact that we have the RF who can, aside from the political sphere, highlight and support good causes and also be used as soft power. It’s unique. And disposing of the institution would not suddenly provide new funds - it would be like the Brexit NHS bus - the mythical £350 million which would magically appear.

Must depend where you are. This bit of Wales seems to be a coronation-free zone. No events, nothing in the shops, no bunting or flags even outside pubs. Today is just a normal day here.

mamabear715 · 06/05/2023 08:16

I woke up too sodding early due to leaving the tv on overnight & an RSM barking orders out.. unfortunately it was more like a wail of pain & I woke thinking someone was being murdered.. so that hasn't put me in a good mood to start with!
I dunno, I still can't get my head round the fact that the two people who totally shocked the country will now be King (heredity, understandable) & Queen.. what happened to Queen CONSORT?
(TV is now off.)

DisquietintheRanks · 06/05/2023 08:47
  1. The majority of the country wasn't "very shocked" (over the death of Diana yes, not over Charles and C).

If you study any British history at all you'll realise that the shenanigans of Charles were very tame indeed.

I’m Scottish, no one I know gives a flying fuck about the royals in general. Everyone I know is planning on actively avoiding the ceremony coverage, just like they did with the diamond jubilee and the queen’s funeral.

I couldn't care less either. Fed up hearing about it.

Not a street party to be seen for miles where we are.

The only celebrations up here are flaming orange walks and I can assure you they are not going to lift kids out of poverty.

Any street parties are tomorrow I think

Says it all !!!

KnittingNeedles · 06/05/2023 11:35

To be fair it is pissing it down and most people are watching it at home rather than sitting in the garden.

KimberleyClark · 05/05/2023 10:03

I don’t really care about it but will probably watch because it’s a once in a lifetime thing.

Probably not once in a lifetime given Charlie’s now in his 70s… unless we do the right thing and abolish it.

With what exactly? Magic beans? There is a cost of living crisis for goodness sake.

The Royal publicity office always spins this nonsense claiming people will spend more. People would probably spend money to watch a public execution too but it doesn't mean we should have them, or that they might spend their money on something more savoury if we don't have them!

Oh honey. The “cost of living crisis” is only a thing for the very vocal minority.

The majority of the population are suffering no such thing.

Really? Should they not be vocal either?

Lots of people are really just surviving, not living.

They can be as vocal as they like, but they’re still a minority.

It’s not nonsense though. The sales of Coronation memorabilia are through the roof. People who aren’t on the bones of their arse have bought extra food or are eating out. Hospitality will do well this weekend - and God knows it needs it after a very rough couple of years. The data will be available soon.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/05/2023 14:01

@Boussa clearly not pissing it down where you are. Mind you I've been to a cafe and done my M&S shop - spring day is irrelevant- it's totally shitty weather here

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 06/05/2023 14:05

The weather is a bonus for hospitality.

We were meant to be watching at an outdoor event (the kids wanted to watch it with friends), but the weather means we’ve watched in a local pub. Lots of people have done the same.

DD1 is in Wetherspoons and there are no tables free at all.
