This is going to infuriate a lot of people but I think we are a nation of fools.

does anyone else really not care? I’m surprised given what’s happening in France there isn’t more opposition to the coronation.

Paying for it is though

the80sweregreat · 03/05/2023 08:53

Let's face it, after waiting to be King all his life he probably sees Saturday as his one to prove his still around and get to wear the big crown.
It's a shame it's going to be rainy and a bit damp according to the forecast. I feel for those people who are starting to camp out already. They clearly feel it's worth it. Even if I think they must be crazy to want to rough it for days to catch a glimpse of him and her.
I'm looking forwards to the concert on Sunday and the mumsnet thread, that is usually good fun.
It's sad that it's all the men in charge again and will be for years to come unless we get shot of them and I can't see that happening for a while though.

vera99 · 03/05/2023 09:14

Let them eat damp sausage rolls. My 88-year-old friend tells me it chucked in 1953, and it was some African Queen with a huge hat that was the most remembered bit of trivia that and an extra 4oz of margarine and a pound of sugar on ration people. If this newsreel us anything to go by they had to recycle old lampshades into a hat ! Our local tat shop had Charles and Camilla made in China masks with cut out eyes that would be more suited to Halloween than a Coronation.

I can't imagine this country would be in any better state without a monarchy. At least the various jubilees , coronations and weddings give us all a chance to celebrate and have fun as a community. Simplistic, yes. However most people I know( unlike the views that seem to be represented on here ) are looking forward to the weekend and the various celebrations that are taking place.

It’s not a free BH it’s costing the UK economy £2.9 Billion, value for money in these times of cost of living crisis, not so sure !

The source for that figure? On that basis Christmas costs nearly six billion every year, perhaps we should ban it like our only republican head of state did.

Greenpin · 03/05/2023 10:35

It's a simple Google to see that it's estimated 2.6 billion will be added to the UK economy by tourism.over the bank holiday so swings and roundabouts?

ElizaBe · 03/05/2023 10:53

Your reply is petulant and facetious. Take in the bigger picture and bear with me whilst I explain something called democracy. The government who the people actually ELECT to represent the interests of the people should in response to the YouGov survey (70% of people said they don't care about the coronation) put a referendum to the people who elected them (opposite of hereditary monarchy) and ask them "do you want to keep and pay for the monarchy?" simple.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 03/05/2023 10:58

Interested to see your sources @Greenpin? The tourism argument has been debunked before after the royal weddings so it would be good to know who did the maths.

Less than half of voters in 2019 voted for the current government which has done very little to represent the interests of anyone but the very rich. As you point out, we have a representational democracy in this country so if you’re so keen to get rid of the monarchy lobby your MP. Of course the last referendum went so well, what an excellent idea to have another one and create even more division in our already riven society.

It's unsurprising to hear that others are concerned about propaganda in schools. There seem to be three things schools (by which I mean primary, secondary seem a bit more open) need to address. First, all references to religion need to stop, at least half my children's classmates aren't Christians and religion should be a matter for the home. Second, royal and other sycophancy around people in government (e.g. the visiting MP who is frankly a cockroach). And third, there really needs to be more effort to have more male teachers/role models in primary schools (although to be fair, the female teachers are much less sexist towards my sons than my female teachers were to me!).

MrsCatE · 03/05/2023 23:28

I don't give a Fly** F apart from:
The money it's costing us
he's pointless, petulant wanker
the fact that mistress is being crowned Queen wtf?
Why didn't he abdicate for William?

Blossomtoes · 03/05/2023 23:57

What mistress? They’ve been married for 18 years.

MacarenaMacarena · 04/05/2023 00:06

With you on this one xx

To not care at all about the King’s coronation?
OMG12 · 04/05/2023 00:14

Can’t wait. When I asked my 10 year old if he wanted to do his normal Saturday club. He said - no way this is a once in a lifetime event, I’m watching it.

Bunting went up today.

Not sure what the awful lawlessness in France has got to do with it though

Loria · 04/05/2023 00:35

Incredible

missmollygreen · 10/04/2023 16:15

Think what you like.
I bet you are going to still accept the free bank holiday though!

That's not true.

We don't care about the coronation and would sooner be at work. We are self employed so it's going to cost us a lot of money to take a day off!

Greenpin · 04/05/2023 10:46

That figure was on a hospitality platform Sevenrooms ,CharleyBear. There seem to be loads of other estimates.
I helped yesterday when I was working in London and went and checked out the Mall. Lots of happiness and excitement there and I bought an ice cream which I wouldn't normally have done.:)

It's becoming quite clear now that the greatest support for the monarchy comes from Tory supporters which is probably their natural instincts as much as they try and hide it. If only Cromwell hadn't been such a Puritan we could have been well shot of them by now. Don't ban Christmas and music seems to be the lesson not that we need a monarch.

pilates · 04/05/2023 20:46

@vera99 a very sweeping generalisation there. I’m sure that’s not the case.

@vera99 a very sweeping generalisation there. I’m sure that’s not the case.

Our modelling shows that monarchists are more likely to be Conservatives, with 75% in favour of royalty and 9% against among 2019 Tory voters. Of the top 100 pro-monarchy seats in the country, 99 are Conservative (Tim Farron’s seat of Westmorland & Lonsdale being the exception), with an average Conservative majority of 38%. Of these, 84 were Conservative-held back in 2010. That 47% of Labour supporters favour the monarchy and 27% oppose may explain Keir Starmer’s newfound enthusiasm for the institution.

Poll shows nationwide backing for monarchy

UnHerd’s latest polling — powered by my firm Focaldata — contains some superficially good news for the King and his supporters. When presented with the statement ‘It’s a good thing Britain has a monarchy’, 55% of respondents agree, and 30% agree strong...

The monarchy might still have majority support but it's nowhere near where it was even 10 years ago and this is based on almost entirely favourable propaganda from the media.

Personally I loved the queen, she gave a lifetime of devoted service.

the rest of them should get proper jobs and whole think scaled right down. I do rather admire princes Anne though, but still remember and despise what the R F did to Diana.

malificent7 · 05/05/2023 07:47

Charles is the only Royal I like because he actually cares about green issues. I hope he will have some influence as head of state. So I will be watching because of his green credentials.
