Has anyone seen the new video of the Dalai Llama asking a child to suck his tongue. Yes. It sounds bizarre. But it is in the news right now. The video is out there. And the dalai llama is apologising on social media now Im devastated! I went to see the Dalai Llama in India. He gave a speech on accepting and loving everyone, and that it didn't matter what religion we are. I always told people that it was one of the highlights of my life. I went through life thinking he was a good person, that he was one of the good ones. To see this today, makes me think oh no is he yet another abuser. Some people have remarked about this video that sticking your tongue out at someone is a greeting in Tibet. However - the Dalai Llama kisses the child on the lips in the video, and asks the child to suck his tongue. It does not look right at all. He has apologised on twitter now. What do you all think?

Yes. That's what people should be focussing on. Instead of coming up with excuses as to why it happened.

And people are making excuses.

Dementia is a read herring. He could have had a bang to the head or brain tumour.

A little boy was coerced to stand foreheads and chins touching as an old man kissed him, then asked to suck an old man's tounge that was forced in his mouth and people around, clapped and laughed.

Some filters are definitely still turned firmly on. He playfully coaxed the boy into participating in something akin to sexual foreplay, introducing it stage-by-stage. He is otherwise fully performing in his role as DL.

People are making excuses from a position of complete disbelief I think. This is a venerated, well travelled and educated man who is the leader of a religion that to many is the holy grail of religions. It's not meant to be like Catholicism with its dirty secrets so I think for many western Buddhists (or hippies who read his books) they are in denial. Any excuse that they can present to keep up this illusion of the man they have created in their head they will grasp onto.

If you look at the Instagram feed and the comments under the apology post you'll see what I mean. A scandal involving the head of a religion rocks people's entire belief systems. It's a lot to get a handle on

I think I’ve been removed enough from this veneration to just judge by what happened.

Religion is so often a ruse for hideous male behaviour so it doesn’t surprise that much.

That's concerning in itself because his Western followers are disproportionately comprised of well spoken, middle class, articulate people holding down powerful jobs in many cases. They mainly have their own ego needs to continue to be proven to be right in choosing a path led by him. They can explain it away through theorization, rationalization and distraction but the bare facts remain straightforward to interpret.

I don't think people always understand their religions and some will deny that they are in a religion.

OP didn't understand the Catholic church and Budism yet was a member of both. So many don't understand Queer ideology and what Foucault did.

I know I’m going to get flamed for this but I still don’t view DL pedo because of this. And no, I’ve never read his teachings, or been “part of his cult”, and I unfortunately have experience in my consent being overridden so I can understand the seriousness of such situations but I genuinely think it was a joke.

Most of the Silicon Valley big cheese follow the DL. Do you really think they manage to park their giant egos at the door for a couple of hours and pick them up again soon after? The lack of clarity provided by the DL's vast operation since it happened also tells me a lot.

No they do not. The dogma of Papal infallibility only applies when he speaks ex cathedra, which is essentially an official announcement from him on matters of Catholic Christian doctrine. So, only any ex cathedra announcement he makes in regards to Catholic Christian is infallible.

That’s it. He can be fallible in everything else he says, and he can also sin. So the Catholic Church does not teach that he is the best Catholic or that he is personally infallible.

To put this in context, the last time any Pope spoke ex cathedra was in 1950 which was affirm Mary’s assumption into heaven upon her death.

Very sensible post. I have been reluctant to comment as the vultures immediately attack you if suggest occam's razor, that the DL as Dementia. It does NOT mean posters are excusing his behaviour. What we are saying, is that there is maybe a reason, and perhaps if the DL knew what he was doing, he would be absolutely horrified. Having worked with elderly and patients with dementia, I can tell you many of them act out in ways, including sexually, you would never, ever, EVER imagine them to do in real life if they were in full possession of their faculties. People believe even with dementia the person meant to do it, they were in possession of their full faculties, etc. This thread is quite depressing. It's so polarised because there is a lack of critical thinking. If you even so much as deign to suggest it's dementia, you are accused of excusing child abuse.

It does NOT mean he didn't abuse the child.
It does NOT mean he is innocent.
It does NOT make it ok.

But, it is a reason. That's all people are saying.

And this isn't the first time that he's done something objectionable.

It’s more relevant than the speculation that he has been a closet pedophile for 75yrs, that he is intentionally abusing his power, or has been corrupted by a celibate lifestyle.

Why hasn't a statement been issued confirming his dementia if that were the case? What he has done is serious enough to oblige him to lay aside his preference to keep it private. I would say that he does not want to reveal that the perfected state of being and the mystique surrounding it which he has claimed for so long was a sham all along. Some followers would question why he turned out to be fallible and prone to these conditions just like they are.

I admit that don't know a great deal about dementia but it is the followers who have thrown it into the mix with no proof and the story has almost vanished overnight which raises many questions.

You are talking nonsense. The Dalai Lama is not viewed as a “perfected state of being” or “infallible”. And, again, he’s never once claimed any of this. He didn’t even choose to be a religious leader of any sort, nor the Dalai Lama. He was chosen and had no choice as to what his life was going to be.

The Dalai Lama is known to be human and so of course he is susceptible to human illness and disease. His followers have never been taught or think that he is some perfect immortal being.

You not only know extremely little about dementia, you know next to nothing about the religion he is a spiritual leader of.
