To think this was not enough food?

Went to visit a relative yesterday.

There were five adults, a teenager and two younger kids.

Dinner was two supermarket pizzas, 4 potato waffles and 15 chicken nuggets between all of us.

As usual her kids dived in and had to be reminded there were others.

DS is autistic and pizza is one of his safe foods. He would only touch one of them as it was plain cheese, and this only had about three slices (because DH and I gave him ours). He was hungry as he hadn't eaten lunch (he only eats one out of lunch and dinner most days).

Ended up having to get food on the way home.

AIBU to think that this wasn't enough, and I f you offer to cater for people you actually provide enough food?

Are you sure you were expected/ might they have forgotten you were coming ?
It sounds more like either that was what they planned for their own lunch and made it stretch, or they grabbed what they had in the freezer.
The fact that there was 4 waffles between you all us very odd.

My Grandma always used to under cater. She had an extremely sendantary lifestyle (being in her 90s) so needed few calories to maintain her weight. By contrast we went out for lunch yesterday with my teen daughter and her 6 foot 1 still growing boyfriend who was told by his sports coach he needs 4500 calories per day as he trains so much and is still growing. I don't need so much because my job is mainly sitting on my arse all day, so whenever I see people saying they'd be full on a cup a soup and an apple I tend to think they have a similar lifestyle to me and my Grandma, rather than my daughter's superfit basketball playing boyfriend.

DelilahBucket · 09/04/2023 09:02

Nowhere near enough. We had five adults, teen DS, teen niece (doesn't eat much and brought her own sushi because she is picky) and two younger nephews for tea this week. I did five pizzas, three garlic baguettes, plus coleslaw, chips and dips, houmous, cucumber, celery, carrot and cherry tomatoes. The only leftovers were a slice of pizza, two pieces of garlic bread and a few cherry tomatoes. We had dessert too. Granted we had been to the park before and the kids were starving but no one there was a massive eater or obese for that matter.

CottonSock · 09/04/2023 09:03

Sounds like they hadn't catered for you to be honest.

My first hit
Half a pizza
509cories

Mine were about the same. Even Pizza Huts large classic margarita is 1866kcal.

PhillyJoe · 09/04/2023 09:05

Even a large Dominoes pizza is only around 2000 calories. What supermarket pizza is 3000 calories?!

To think this was not enough food?
TheYearOfSmallThings · 09/04/2023 09:05

It's a random selection and I'm guessing the people hosting are either young or not very interested in food?

It wouldn't bother though. When someone invites you to their house it's not really about the food - you go for the chat and to spend time with them. Just look on the food they served as a snack to tide you over, and you can always eat something later, as you did.

GrandmaWins · 09/04/2023 09:06

My DD is 7 and would have maybe 2 slices of the pizza, 2 potato waffles, and 4-5 nuggets herself.

Not that I'd serve all of those together as a dinner.

KnittingNeedles · 09/04/2023 09:07

The competitive undereating poster has clearly happened upon an American result for her google search.

Pizzas there can be much much larger - a fresh one we bought in Walmart was twice the size of any you'd buy in a supermarket here. The extra large pizzas are about 1.5kg in weight and probably about 3000 calories but one is enough for a family. With a "massive salad", of course.

This was honestly my first hit and I rounded to 3000 calories to make the maths easier

What's an Almond Mom?

ChrisPPancake · 09/04/2023 09:09

I swear I've read this thread before, even down to the supermarket pizza.
For the competitive under eaters it's more than enough.

MoreSleepPleasee · 09/04/2023 09:09

Me and my son would eat that between 2 or 3 of us. If we have pizza we always have 1 each but could share 1 between 2 with sides. Not enough food by far.

GrazingSheep · 09/04/2023 09:09

It would be helpful if the op could clarify the circumstances.

JustDanceAddict · 09/04/2023 09:10

Absolutely not enough, it’s the sort of thing MIL used to do. One supermarket pizza for 4 people etc! Dh and I would roll our eyes.
For 8 people - 4 pizzas, 10-12 waffles, 16-20 nuggets. It’s all freezer crap anyway so not hard to do! Also, where’s the vegetables?!

L3ThirtySeven · 09/04/2023 08:41

You have underestimated as many over-eaters do.

A large cheese pizza (no toppings) is 3000 calories
A potato waffle is 95 calories
A Chicken nugget (if baked) is 45 calories

So a 1/4 of a large cheese pizza is 750 calories plus a waffle at 95 calories and two chicken nuggets at 90 calories= 935 calories

For young women of average height, the recommended caloric intake is 2000 calories a day, for young men of berate height, it is 2,500 calories a day.

935 calories is a lot to use on one meal. And we haven’t even looked at drinks…

OP says ‘large supermarket pizza.’ I looked and a large cheese pizza from Asda is 386 calories for 1/4 of a pizza (I assume 2 slices as the pizza would be cut into 8). There’s only 1/2 potato waffle available per person so that’s 47 calories (but who’s going to bother with 1/2 waffle?). McDonald’s chicken nuggets are 42 calories each (just checked).

That’s 517 calories. However, OP’s sister’s children grabbed most of the pizza and nuggets so most people didn’t have much food at all. People wouldn’t have bothered with 1/2 potato waffle so most people would’ve probably consumed a lot less calories. This is a very stingy amount of food for 8 people, especially when these 8 people aren’t all primary school aged.

Take your eating disorder elsewhere. I hope you don’t shame your children for eating more than 1000 calories a day seeing as you grossly overestimate calories.

shutthewindownow · 09/04/2023 09:10

If course it wasn't why do you need to ask

GrandmaWins · 09/04/2023 09:10

I assumed by supermarket pizza they meant like co-op own brand which is about 350 cals for half a pizza.

Stravaig · 09/04/2023 09:11

Ah, remember the days when a single family supermarket pizza used to actually feed a family? One huge or a couple of thin slices each, served with salad, then scrap over the leftovers. It is in truth enough food to meet calorific requirements. It just doesn't feel like enough in these days of overeating and obesity.

They probably just misjudged 🤷‍♀️ It's easily done, especially if they're not used to hosting and/or they're also worried about money.

Your son's special food requirements are your responsiblity though, to communicate clearly in advance, and to provide a backup in case they case they get it wrong.

Scarlettpixie · 09/04/2023 09:11

Context is everything. Was this a long standing invite to dinner on easter saturday or an ad hoc would you like to stay to dinner. The first I would expect more, the second not so much. Either way, not sure it is something I would post about. Just have more food when you get home if you are still hungry. My other thoughts are maybe that is all they had to offer, maybe they are skint or they just don’t know how to cater for larger numbers. At the end of the day they were being hospitable even if it was not up to your standards. You sound ungrateful.

In nice Italian restaurants, they serve individual pizzas at least as large as the plate. As one serving. Even in Italy. And I reckon most adults eat most of that pizza. Do you think that’s wrong?

We are a family of adults in our fifties and older teens. None of us with a BMI over 20, all genetically slim, fit and healthy. Yet we can polish most if not all of an entire pizza when we go out for dinner at our lovely local Italian. Do you disapprove?! (I won’t stop eating a pizza of course, just curious!).

avocadotofu · 09/04/2023 09:11

Definitely not enough food!

MauveCow · 09/04/2023 09:12

As usual her kids dived in and had to be reminded there were others.

Can't blame them, sounds as if they don't get fed enough and have to eat like wolves. Survival of the fattest.

Gensola · 09/04/2023 09:13

It’s not enough, also weird to serve adults beige kiddie food

Why not just google the pizza you normally eat and see how many calories it has. If yours has 3000 then it's a massive calorie fest and probably would serve more people. The fact that you had to search for a generic guessimate of what a pizza has in the way of calories is quite telling.

My favourite pizza (can't eat it anymore, sadly) is a lovely Waitrose prawn and garlic butter one and has just over 1000 calories. I would eat half.
