To think this was not enough food?

Klex · 09/04/2023 08:14

Went to visit a relative yesterday.

There were five adults, a teenager and two younger kids.

Dinner was two supermarket pizzas, 4 potato waffles and 15 chicken nuggets between all of us.

As usual her kids dived in and had to be reminded there were others.

DS is autistic and pizza is one of his safe foods. He would only touch one of them as it was plain cheese, and this only had about three slices (because DH and I gave him ours). He was hungry as he hadn't eaten lunch (he only eats one out of lunch and dinner most days).

Ended up having to get food on the way home.

AIBU to think that this wasn't enough, and I f you offer to cater for people you actually provide enough food?

I'd have budgeted half supermarket pizza per person, plus salad. The weird 4 waffles and 15 chicken nuggets is just odd

wentworthinmate · 10/04/2023 18:42

Absolutely not enough! Who would do that???? I’d be so embarrassed at the quantity and quality!

You have underestimated as many over-eaters do.

A large cheese pizza (no toppings) is 3000 calories
A potato waffle is 95 calories
A Chicken nugget (if baked) is 45 calories

So a 1/4 of a large cheese pizza is 750 calories plus a waffle at 95 calories and two chicken nuggets at 90 calories= 935 calories

For young women of average height, the recommended caloric intake is 2000 calories a day, for young men of berate height, it is 2,500 calories a day.

935 calories is a lot to use on one meal. And we haven’t even looked at drinks…

What supermarket pizza do you have access to??? Large cheese pizza, under 1000 calories!

Even the massive one is only about 1400 calories for the whole thing

Mumwomansisterdaughter · 10/04/2023 19:00

That wasn’t even enough for 4 adults and 1 teen . But then again I would never serve chicken nuggets to gets so maybe the host is nit used to
having people ? Or maybe they could not afford more

BarbaraofSeville · 10/04/2023 19:13

Neither of those pizzas are particularly large, however they're described.

3000 calories is probably an overestimate for a supermarket pizza, but it's probably in the right ball park for a large Domino's but a couple more examples available from supermarkets:

But seeing as the OP clarified it was a planned visit, it was odd and not very hospitable for that food to be served. It looked very much like they'd forgotten they were coming, or were suffering unknown financial difficulties.

As it is a relative, I'd say something. Either suggest that more food is needed or volunteer to go to the shop for another pizza. Surely a caring Auntie/Grandparent etc would want everyone to be catered for, and particularly for a child with autism to feel as comfortable as possible?

Jourdain11 · 10/04/2023 19:20

I had an aunt and uncle like this. We'd visit a few times a year and each time would be the same, a couple of quiches and some bits of cheese for 4 adults and 9 children. We used to beg my mum to be allowed to eat first, and she'd always say no, so we'd always be hungry!

When they came to stay with us, they would behave absolutely opposite. One child would guzzle a whole carton of orange juice at breakfast, they'd put away an entire baguette between two of them...

I don't think they were particularly poor, just tight!

MibsXX · 10/04/2023 19:21

In my house our meals have had to get smaller through sheer inability to buy more at the moment...

Stopcomplainingandsortit · 10/04/2023 19:40

You could cut the waffles diagonally 🤣

Buffs · 10/04/2023 19:42

Probably a genuine mistake, I wouldn’t mention it to the host. It did you no harm buying some food on the way home.

@BarbaraofSeville I agree, but OP specifically said one of the pizzas was just cheese so I excluded meat feast - of course that would have significantly more calories but still not 3000! Your Tesco link wouldn’t open for me, but the Sains meaty did.

Whatmeagain · 10/04/2023 20:07

I'm putting a lot of effort into correct portion sizes and a 1/4 of a large pizza, a waffle and a couple of chicken nuggets would be a lot of calories! So she was possibly right that it was enough food.

Not sure about your maths Grumpybutfunny but four waffles doesn’t give one each and someone would only get one nugget. And just because it is high in calories doesn’t always mean there’s sufficient food to address hunger when you are talking about these kind of high calorie meals rather than lower calorie but healthier protein and vegetables.

TeacherTeacher90 · 10/04/2023 20:12

Maybe she thought she was just feeding the kids 😳🤣

DobbleBobble · 10/04/2023 20:33

I'd have done that amount for the teenager and 2 kids

I think it’s actually enough food unless the pizzas were very small. No wonder we have an obesity crisis if the OP thinks three slices of pizza for their DS is so little they had to stop and buy more food on the way home. It’s also depressing to note zero salad or vegetables in that meal.

Surely that depends how large the slices are?? We could be talking quarters but equally the slices might be a 12th of a pizza

Mrsgreen100 · 10/04/2023 22:24

Sounds like they are short of cash
shame that they couldn’t just make a big pot of lentil soup,
chicken nuggets aren’t food for real anyway

Ktime · 10/04/2023 22:32

Are they tight?

I would stop cooking for them and serve them the same food they serve you.

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 11/04/2023 00:06

OP you've started a competitive under eating thread, MN is famous for them. "No one in their right mind could possibly eat more than half a potato waffle they'd be stuffed for days", that sort of shit. Clearly it wasn't enough, I take it the host wasn't in the slightest bit embarrassed though?

Love the posters trying to make out that this was somehow your fault e.g., what your son ate etc.

3 slices of a supermarket pizza is not much at all. My nephew would see that as an appetiser. Are you envisioning large Dominos style pizzas?

Littlepicker · 11/04/2023 13:19

Half a potato waffle each?? That’s so weird! Serving potato waffles with pizza is also weird!

Hmm1234 · 11/04/2023 13:23

It’s not enough but maybe they’re struggling financially.
Also, no harm in guests bringing over food/ snacks to their host

Half of Mumsnet will tell you you're horrendously rude for that suggestion Grin

Stewball01 · 11/04/2023 14:21

I'm a large lady. I wasn't. I can quite easily eat between 4 and 5 quarters. Then I'd manage one piece.

THEDEACON · 12/04/2023 21:12

Definitely not enough food 4 potato waffles between 8
