To think this was not enough food?

Went to visit a relative yesterday.

There were five adults, a teenager and two younger kids.

Dinner was two supermarket pizzas, 4 potato waffles and 15 chicken nuggets between all of us.

As usual her kids dived in and had to be reminded there were others.

DS is autistic and pizza is one of his safe foods. He would only touch one of them as it was plain cheese, and this only had about three slices (because DH and I gave him ours). He was hungry as he hadn't eaten lunch (he only eats one out of lunch and dinner most days).

Ended up having to get food on the way home.

AIBU to think that this wasn't enough, and I f you offer to cater for people you actually provide enough food?

dd as a teen had friends round,
i provided mini pizzas, i think for all of them, memory is vague as to the size, of the pizza, however they all had one pizza, apart from one, as i had miscounted! luckily he had bought a pot noodle with him Grin

AlexiaR · 09/04/2023 08:24

But what if that’s all they could afford?

PoBaFla · 09/04/2023 08:25

Had they invited you for dinner? Because the potato waffle situation sounds odd!
Unless the pizza slices were tiny, 3 should have been enough for your son. I'd calculate 3 slices each,

PickaxeForGardening · 09/04/2023 08:26

OP you will get people sneering about the junk quality of the food rather than offering an opinion about the amounts.

L3ThirtySeven · 09/04/2023 08:21

I think it’s actually enough food unless the pizzas were very small. No wonder we have an obesity crisis if the OP thinks three slices of pizza for their DS is so little they had to stop and buy more food on the way home. It’s also depressing to note zero salad or vegetables in that meal.

I love it when the competitive under eaters come out of the woodwork 😂

Werehalfwaythere · 09/04/2023 08:27

That's not enough food, and it sounds crap. Adults don't want potato waffles or nuggets. I'd have wanted a salad and/or chips with my pizza.

Was it an elderly person who provided the food? I find older people often have less appetites so perhaps they based the portions on what they eat without thinking.

supersonicginandtonic · 09/04/2023 08:23

@L3ThirtySeven are you being serious? How is 3 slices of pizza enough for a growing child? My son would easily eat the pizza, the nuggets and have room left over. He's 5ft 9 and a size 30 waist and still growing 🙈

Yes, I’m being serious. 3 slices is enough unless it is a small pizza. We’ve always eaten 2 slices and a bit of green salad and that’s dinner as teens/adults.

Changingplace · 09/04/2023 08:28

What size pizzas? Weird to serve x4 waffles, not even one per person??

Odd selection of food for guests unless they weren’t expecting you and grabbed whatever they had in the freezer.

MissMarplesbag · 09/04/2023 08:28

AlexiaR · 09/04/2023 08:24

But what if that’s all they could afford?

Then she should have either not hosted or asked people to bring a dish to share.
I usually find that people like this are grabby cfs rather than broke.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 09/04/2023 08:30

It sounds like they're skint and you should have bought something to contribute.

Thelastofbus · 09/04/2023 08:30

It doesn’t sound like a proper dinner for 8 people. Many teens could easily pop a whole pizza away by them selves! It would be ok for lunch maybe, but I’d want to have something salady too. We often do
pizza for family lunches and tend to find that two or 3 slices is all people eat when there are potato salads etc to put on the plate too.

it sounds like they offered to do dinner, and then realised the had nothing in and the shops were closed!

sst1234 · 09/04/2023 08:30

The number of threads in this forum about people being stingy with guests never ceases to amaze. Why invite people over if you’re going to give them beige supermarket food. And not even enough of that.

The ongoing soup thread is similar. You invite people over and then give them just soup. Same with people who complain that a guest ate too much or that they were inconvenienced because they had to get food for guests.

We seem to be very inhospitable to guests in this country.

Grumpybutfunny · 09/04/2023 08:17

How much did they eat? It's much less than I would serve up but then DH ends up eating it for days afterwards.

I'm putting a lot of effort into correct portion sizes and a 1/4 of a large pizza, a waffle and a couple of chicken nuggets would be a lot of calories! So she was possibly right that it was enough food.

No it wouldn't, what you have just described would be around 500 cal

wwyd2021medicine · 09/04/2023 08:31

Tbh the only time I have seen meals like that is when it's all people can afford. DD had a meal share by 5 which was basically a couple of pizzas, waffles and a cut up sandwich. It was literally all the had in and I think it was kind to share what little they had

ChickenMacaroni · 09/04/2023 08:32

Adults don't want potato waffles or nuggets.

I'd be fucking thrilled tbh 😁Love an orange dinner. Don't waste a beef bourbignon on me! I don't want to wrestle to the death for half a potato waffle though! I'm a really crap hostess (tend to order takeaway or do a very simple pizza and salad type affair when we have guests) so I do sympathise with the host in this case.

blebbleb · 09/04/2023 08:33

@L3ThirtySeven my toddler would eat more than a couple of slices of pizza and a piddly salad.

BrieAndChilli · 09/04/2023 08:33

I think the op was saying that they had to stop and get food for her and DH as they face thier pizza to thier son. Not that their son needed more food.
if it was shared equally I assume they had an 1/8 of the other pizza, 1 or 2 chicken nuggets and 1/2 a waffle which I think we can all agree isn’t an adult portion. junk tea like that I would do 1 slice of pizza, 1 waffle (2 for DH), 4ish chicken nuggets and a scoop of beans but honestly I can’t remember the last time I made that as a meal. It’s the sort of thing that the teens dog out the feeezer when making themselves some lunch.

Thelastofbus · 09/04/2023 08:34

Yes, I’m being serious. 3 slices is enough unless it is a small pizza. We’ve always eaten 2 slices and a bit of green salad and that’s dinner as teens/adults.

For dinner?! After a full day of work/school/activity? That’s not enough food for most people, but if it makes you feel smug and superior then good for you.

Oysterbabe · 09/04/2023 08:34

1/4 of a pizza 250 calories.
1/2 a waffle 50 calories
2 nuggets 100 calories.

No it's not enough food for dinner and all the 'oh that's plenty, we've lost sight of normal eating' people can get to fuck.

2reefsin30knots · 09/04/2023 08:22

It wasn't enough food, but it also wasn't a meal. It sounds like what they dug out of the freezer in a food-emergency. Were they definitely expecting you to stay?

This was my thought too. That's an "oh shit I need to feed everyone - what can I find that they'll all eat" mash up.

Overthebow · 09/04/2023 08:35

AlexiaR · 09/04/2023 08:24

But what if that’s all they could afford?

Well if that’s all they could afford they shouldn’t host or should ask others to contribute and bring food. Asda garlic bread is 30p though, could have added a couple of those to bulk it out.

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/04/2023 08:35

Sounds like plenty for the kids. I would've just sat back and let them dive in. If it looked like there wouldn't be any leftovers I'd say I wasn't hungry or had a big lunch etc.
Mumsnet is awash with these "not enough food" threads atm! In this day and age v few of us are likely to waste away any time soon!

Of course it's not enough food for 8 people. A quarter of a supermarket pizza, half a waffle and 2 nuggets?
