To think this was not enough food?

Went to visit a relative yesterday.

There were five adults, a teenager and two younger kids.

Dinner was two supermarket pizzas, 4 potato waffles and 15 chicken nuggets between all of us.

As usual her kids dived in and had to be reminded there were others.

DS is autistic and pizza is one of his safe foods. He would only touch one of them as it was plain cheese, and this only had about three slices (because DH and I gave him ours). He was hungry as he hadn't eaten lunch (he only eats one out of lunch and dinner most days).

Ended up having to get food on the way home.

AIBU to think that this wasn't enough, and I f you offer to cater for people you actually provide enough food?

How much did they eat? It's much less than I would serve up but then DH ends up eating it for days afterwards.

I'm putting a lot of effort into correct portion sizes and a 1/4 of a large pizza, a waffle and a couple of chicken nuggets would be a lot of calories! So she was possibly right that it was enough food.

2 slices of pizza, half a potato waffle and 2 chicken nuggets is enough for a primary school child, but not an adult or teen. I say this as someone who is underweight but doesn’t restrict. This probably wasn’t an even share as OP’s relative’s (sister?) children jumped in first and piled up their plates. Many people would’ve had a lot less than this. The sister should’ve portioned everything out equally (and bought more food).

knittingaddict · 09/04/2023 08:50

The amount of food and the food served is so disappointing that I would shed a tear over that lot.

Very strange that anyone in real life would consider that an adequate meal.

Not to mention that the pizza would be the only thing I would remotely enjoy. Can't stand chicken nuggets or potato waffles.

You have underestimated as many over-eaters do. What a dickish comment!

You clearly overestimated substantially (x3).

Hum interesting, I can be called a competitive under eater, miserable and so on, but if I say over eater back in response I’m the dick? Sorry but I tend to reflect back what I’m shown. If I’m shown respect, I give respect back.

L3ThirtySeven · 09/04/2023 08:41

You have underestimated as many over-eaters do.

A large cheese pizza (no toppings) is 3000 calories
A potato waffle is 95 calories
A Chicken nugget (if baked) is 45 calories

So a 1/4 of a large cheese pizza is 750 calories plus a waffle at 95 calories and two chicken nuggets at 90 calories= 935 calories

For young women of average height, the recommended caloric intake is 2000 calories a day, for young men of berate height, it is 2,500 calories a day.

935 calories is a lot to use on one meal. And we haven’t even looked at drinks…

I have never seen a pizza that has 3,000 calories, the average I have seen is around 800, what pizzas are you buying?

Singapore4 · 09/04/2023 08:51

Did you offer to bring any item of food or pudding? Given your child had not had lunch and is a particular eater I would have defo brought some food along too.

Is the relative struggling for money?

EggyBreads · 09/04/2023 08:51

A regular Supermarket pizza is around 800 calories. So no it's not enough food at all. I eat a whole one of those pizzas for myself!

AlexiaR · 09/04/2023 08:24

But what if that’s all they could afford?

Don't invite people for lunch if you can't afford to feed them.

Oysterbabe · 09/04/2023 08:53

MissTrip82 · 09/04/2023 08:49

People don’t count calories in meals served to guests surely.

Two mars bars each would be plenty of calories but I still wouldn’t see it as either a substantial meal or suitable to serve to guests.

Of course not, but it's a good indication of whether what was served is a reasonable portion of food.
2 Mars bars would be 460 calories, also not enough for a main meal for most adults.

Your comment is dickish and warrants no respect.
You mad a sweeping judgement and a massive error on your calorie counting and instead of saying ‘my bad’ you doubled down and continued to harp on 🙄.

L3ThirtySeven · 09/04/2023 08:27

Yes, I’m being serious. 3 slices is enough unless it is a small pizza. We’ve always eaten 2 slices and a bit of green salad and that’s dinner as teens/adults.

I'm pre diabetic, on a low carb diet and losing weight rapidly. I would eat more than you seem to feel is adequate. It's not enough for an adult unless you are very, very inactive

It was simply the first hit on Google that said large cheese pizza is 3,000 calories. Same for the other items. Obviously we have no idea what sort of pizza or potato waffles or chicken nuggets were served as there is variance.

Okunevo · 09/04/2023 08:54

Were they the 10 inch two serve pizzas or the bigger three serve pizzas in the chilled section? If the latter, I'd have got three pizzas so everyone had enough pizza and not bothered with the other food, the former and I'd have got four (though could be an oven space issue?)

crossstitchingnana · 09/04/2023 08:54

Enough for lunch, not dinner. It sounds like they were not expecting you to stay, or forgot to cater.

KnittingNeedles · 09/04/2023 08:54

3000 calories in a pizza - I've heard it all now.

Just out of interest I looked on the Asda website - the most calorific I could find was the Aloha Hawaiian fresh large pizza which is 932g in weight and 1620 calories. Half of what the competitive undereater thinks.

Large cheese pizzas are not 3,000 calories, more like 800, someone eating two slices and salad aren’t getting anywhere near enough calories if that is a reflection of an average meal for them.

Comfies · 09/04/2023 08:55

Sounds like poor hosting. But some people are just poor hosts.

Next time bring food with you! I would do that as a matter of course for my picky eater; "I'll bring a side dish". Then bring Mac and cheese or garlic bread or whatever your DC likes and bring plenty of it. Or just don't accept another invitation for food. Stick to movie night or whatever

As are many of the comments directed towards me. 🤷‍♀️

Don't invite people for lunch if you can't afford to feed them.

The OP has yet to clarify if they were expected (for dinner)
All we know is (derailing about calories, healthy eating, undereating, poverty, overeating aside) what was served (for dinner) was enough for the host family of 4 people, but not if the OP's family were being factored in (including a child who hadn't had lunch and only eats certain things)

The OP had to stop on the way home and buy more food. I expect the host had to do the same.

TellHimDirectlyInDetail · 09/04/2023 08:16

Yeah it doesn't sound enough food. What do you want do you want to gain from this post? (Genuine question)

Same genuine question here

Alwayswonderedwhy · 09/04/2023 08:58

Not enough food and very beige. Are they struggling financially?

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 09/04/2023 08:58

No it's not enough food. We have one relative who has started doing this after always putting on a good 'spread'. Personally I think it's partially money but also as she's got older and as our kids have got older she sort of forgets how much to allow per person as she thinks of them as babies still. We now just eat beforehand or offer to bring stuff as I'm conscious we are a big family and it's expensive to feed us.

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/04/2023 08:58

I think your relative needs to teach her kids some manners and tell them not to "dive in" and allow guests to help themselves first! V rude.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Which is what the OP says she did. The children started to eat, their mother told them not to.
