To think this was not enough food?

Went to visit a relative yesterday.

There were five adults, a teenager and two younger kids.

Dinner was two supermarket pizzas, 4 potato waffles and 15 chicken nuggets between all of us.

As usual her kids dived in and had to be reminded there were others.

DS is autistic and pizza is one of his safe foods. He would only touch one of them as it was plain cheese, and this only had about three slices (because DH and I gave him ours). He was hungry as he hadn't eaten lunch (he only eats one out of lunch and dinner most days).

Ended up having to get food on the way home.

AIBU to think that this wasn't enough, and I f you offer to cater for people you actually provide enough food?

Not enough and also a really rubbish offering!

DaaamnYoullDo · 09/04/2023 12:39

Not enough food and also pretty shit offers, what use is 4 potato waffles?

PapadamPreach · 09/04/2023 12:41

Have we had 6ft tall 12 year old boys with hollow legs, yet?

My bingo card is almost complete.

Grumpybutfunny · 09/04/2023 08:17

How much did they eat? It's much less than I would serve up but then DH ends up eating it for days afterwards.

I'm putting a lot of effort into correct portion sizes and a 1/4 of a large pizza, a waffle and a couple of chicken nuggets would be a lot of calories! So she was possibly right that it was enough food.

So 1/4 of a pizza, 2 chicken nuggets (one poor soul only gets 1) and half a waffle (note there wasn’t 1 each, only 4 to go round 8 people) is enough food?

To be honest I would make more than the food put out, for 2 adults and 2 kids, and it would all be eaten! I would also add in salad, coleslaw, onion rings and possibly a pasta dish.

We've had tall teenagers and "no wonder there's an obesity crisis". I don't think we've lost sight of what a healthy weight looks like yet, though.

You have underestimated as many over-eaters do.

A large cheese pizza (no toppings) is 3000 calories
A potato waffle is 95 calories
A Chicken nugget (if baked) is 45 calories

So a 1/4 of a large cheese pizza is 750 calories plus a waffle at 95 calories and two chicken nuggets at 90 calories= 935 calories

For young women of average height, the recommended caloric intake is 2000 calories a day, for young men of berate height, it is 2,500 calories a day.

935 calories is a lot to use on one meal. And we haven’t even looked at drinks…

You are making yourself sound very silly in order to prove a point.

OP is talking about supermarket pizzas. As an example, let’s take a Tesco own brand thin and crispy cheese and tomato pizza. 722 calories in the whole thing.

You are talking about takeaways, which no-one above has mentioned. Keep humiliating yourself if you like, but I’d recommend stopping there.

Supernova23 · 09/04/2023 13:02

No way. We would eat that between two of us. Plus, I'd be mortified about inviting people over to eat and serving THAT!! potato waffles and nuggets?!? embarrassing.

KnittingNeedles · 09/04/2023 09:22

Come on, @L3ThirtySeven. You were the one who stated that two slices of pizza, half a waffle and 2 chicken nuggets was an adequate meal. Then when posters pointed out that actually it's like 400 calories, you desperately rushed off to Google to find some figures to back up your claims. And failed, miserably, to do so.

Yes perhaps you are right that the meal is a bit lacking in veg/fruit but as a one-off that's not an issue, is it? It's fine to eat beige freezer food every so often, as long as that's not ALL you're eating.

I didn’t state that. You must be confused.

@L3ThirtySeven

Theyre not large dominoes pizzas they’re supermarket ones. God, I bet your guests have fun 😂 bet they go home and have a feed lol.

My BBQs and dinner parties are very popular :)
But then I don’t serve pizza, potato waffles and chicken nuggets. I think even prison food is better than that selection. 🤣

lv884 · 09/04/2023 13:06

This thread is yet another which makes me realise why so many young people learn to have disordered habits when it comes to food. I used to think it was social media but I saw this competitive undereating I see here daily with two influential relatives growing up.

JupiterFortified · 09/04/2023 12:31

Am I the only person who eats a whole pizza in one sitting? 😂

Nope!

My family would look at me like I'd gone mental if I started divying up pizzas into slices for dinner!

L3ThirtySeven · 09/04/2023 13:13

MauveCow · 09/04/2023 09:57

I'm still in bed. Husband just brought me a cup of tea and the kids brought me some Easter pictures they've been colouring in.

I win.

I don’t think I want what you’ve won…

I’ve just removed 3m x 3m of gravel and put it in a new 2m x 4m wide border, pulled and cut up the old underlay. Levelled and raked the ground all ready for turf. Then I filled a green bin with weeds and the last of the old leaves. Swept the patio, power washed the patio furniture. Hung out another load of laundry in my conservatory. And now I’ve had a bit of lunch with the kids and am resting before starting on some sewing. Oh and I have my Cadbury cream egg here as it is Easter.

vivainsomnia · 09/04/2023 13:13

So two slices of pizza per adult/teenager and 7 chicken nuggets and one potatoes waffle per child, assuming some salad on the side and a desert are normal portions for a meal, not a feast.

Not shocking, acceptable numbers of calories but nowadays, most expect to pig out when eating out.

I don’t count calories at all. I didn’t even introduce calories into the thread.

CornishGem1975 · 09/04/2023 12:17

Stuff the calories, not everyone is obsessed!

I easily eat a pizza to myself, as do most people. You rarely see someone sitting in a restaurant eating quarter of a sodding pizza.

This!

Mammyloveswine · 09/04/2023 13:46

Not even a waffle each!!

Id be starving op!

Reminds me of the Mother's Day we went to in laws... I offered to get extra for dinner and was told no there's plenty... then bil and family rocked up.., again I offered to pop to the coop for a chicken and some prepared veg... nope there'll be plenty..

Had one roast potato, a slither of beef, spoonful of veg... and mil then found half a bottle of wine in the fridge so we had a thimble of wine each too,

I was breastfeeding and was starving! Ended up getting a Big Mac on the way home!

Apart from the chilli that they turned their noses up at, what do they normally eat when they come to yours?

Depends on who is coming. If her youngest isn't with them then casseroles, roasts, (hidden veg) lasagne and the like. If she is then we'd do Mac and cheese or at least three of the same size pizzas, plus garlic bread and salad for three adults and three kids.

This is a child that thinks strawberries are "too spicy" (and no she's not a toddler).

Definitely not enough food.

The way you describe the picky eater on the other side of the family though...please try not to judge. People without autism can have food problems too, and as this is a girl there is also a heightened possibility that she is masking neurodiversity, with food being one of the few signs.

But yes, definitely not enough food provided on this occasion.

I'm putting a lot of effort into correct portion sizes and a 1/4 of a large pizza, a waffle and a couple of chicken nuggets would be a lot of calories! So she was possibly right that it was enough food.

I think it’s actually enough food unless the pizzas were very small. No wonder we have an obesity crisis if the OP thinks three slices of pizza for their DS is so little they had to stop and buy more food on the way home.

Eh???

It's 1/4 of a pizza, 1/2 a waffle and not even 2 chicken nuggets per person Confused

According to MFP that's only just 400 calories which is absolutely NOT a lot of calories.

To think this was not enough food?
2bazookas · 09/04/2023 14:51

It wasn't enough ; sounds like a " OMG, what's in the freezer" panic meal by someone who forgot you were coming (or what time you'd arrive).

OTOH, travelling with an eater as picky as yours, I'd make sure I always took something he could and would eat. I wouldn't rely on a host to remember his quirks and supply them.

Doodar · 09/04/2023 15:08

by the kids behaviour it sounds as though they don't get much to eat normally. I have a friend who's kids are really grabby and greedy with food, she doesn't feed them enough.

OnaBegonia · 09/04/2023 15:27

@L3ThirtySeven
I think you'll find you counted up the calories of the aforementioned feast.
Away and stuff yourself with your whole crème egg 🙄

It's a shame you don't get the reference, because if you'd understood it, you could have said something funny. Might have burned more calories 😬
