To think this was not enough food?

Went to visit a relative yesterday.

There were five adults, a teenager and two younger kids.

Dinner was two supermarket pizzas, 4 potato waffles and 15 chicken nuggets between all of us.

As usual her kids dived in and had to be reminded there were others.

DS is autistic and pizza is one of his safe foods. He would only touch one of them as it was plain cheese, and this only had about three slices (because DH and I gave him ours). He was hungry as he hadn't eaten lunch (he only eats one out of lunch and dinner most days).

Ended up having to get food on the way home.

AIBU to think that this wasn't enough, and I f you offer to cater for people you actually provide enough food?

and more than enough of it so people can take leftovers home with them for lunch next day.

I actually find that more odd than just putting out a couple of pizzas.

It sounds like they're skint and you should have bought something to contribute.

this!
And if your child will only eat one specific thin maybe bring some with you just in case

rainbowstardrops · 09/04/2023 11:31

Putting your autistic DS aside, that is definitely not enough food for eight people!!!

Four waffles between eight people?!!! Were they cut into quarters or something?

Some salad and garlic bread and more chicken nuggets and waffles at least.

Apart from the chilli that they turned their noses up at, what do they normally eat when they come to yours?

I think it’s actually enough food unless the pizzas were very small. No wonder we have an obesity crisis if the OP thinks three slices of pizza for their DS is so little they had to stop and buy more food on the way home. It’s also depressing to note zero salad or vegetables in that meal.

Lol you have a problem

TheBlonde23 · 09/04/2023 11:35

What a glutton you are @L3ThirtySeven. I simply sniff a slice of pizza whilst munching on a single spinach leaf, and that keeps me full for several days. I snack on bits of leftover roast chicken when I start to feel lightheaded.

hattie43 · 09/04/2023 11:40

I can only assume they weren't expecting you and raided the freezer .
If that was a planned meal for 8 it's embarrassing in choice and amount . We'd be eating on the way home tbh

SoShallINever · 09/04/2023 11:42

Nowere near enough, I would have announced "right, who wants more pizza" and ordered a delivery. Wouldn't let my kids or myself go hungry.

Klex · 09/04/2023 11:43

Depends on who is coming. If her youngest isn't with them then casseroles, roasts, (hidden veg) lasagne and the like. If she is then we'd do Mac and cheese or at least three of the same size pizzas, plus garlic bread and salad for three adults and three kids.

This is a child that thinks strawberries are "too spicy" (and no she's not a toddler).

Definitely a problem if you think 1 slice of a regular/small pizza, half a waffle and 2 chicken nuggets is a substantial enough dinner for an adult.

It barely sounds enough for two, never mind 8.

DrPrunesquallor · 09/04/2023 11:50

It works out as
half a waffle each
less than 2 chicken nuggets each
and a quarter of a pizza

Its an odd combination but each to their own I suppose.

If it’s a light lunch because you just happen to be dropping by for a couple of hours then fine.
But if you’ve been invited to spend some time there then it seems a very odd sort of meal with not much to it.
This is mean hosting.

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/04/2023 11:51

@TheYearOfSmallThings why is that odd? I always cook more than enough if cooking for friends (who wants to end up on a MN stingy dinner party thread?!) and I like to give them a parcel to take home if they want to.

MyMumIsOnMN · 09/04/2023 11:58

Grumpybutfunny · 09/04/2023 08:17

How much did they eat? It's much less than I would serve up but then DH ends up eating it for days afterwards.

I'm putting a lot of effort into correct portion sizes and a 1/4 of a large pizza, a waffle and a couple of chicken nuggets would be a lot of calories! So she was possibly right that it was enough food.

Only on MN is that “a lot of calories”. A potato waffle is 94 calories. Chicken nuggets are 60 calories a piece. A quarter of a large pizza is 460 calories (based on the large pizza bring an Asda deli one). So a quarter of a pizza, a potato waffle and 2 nuggets is 674 calories. If that’s the main meal of the day it’s not “a lot of calories”.

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/04/2023 12:01

@MyMumIsOnMN yes, but that only leaves you with 326 calories to play with for the rest of the day.

1,000 calories is well below what adults should be eating.

And remember, it was half a waffle per person.

I can’t imagine being served waffles and nuggets in anyone’s house. Grand for a treat for kids but not adults!

Hobnobswantshernameback · 09/04/2023 12:06

There are some very disordered eaters or goady Billy bullshitters on here.

1000 calories a day is for those wanting to lose weight at a rapid rate. It is definitely not what a grown adult or even a growing child should be aiming for. 1000 calories a day is undereating.

MixedFeeling · 09/04/2023 12:13

My guess is that they didn't realise you were staying for dinner so the food that was supposed to serve just one family had to serve two. It's not the sort of food you'd think of serving to guests really.

knittingaddict · 09/04/2023 12:14

The NHS says a child between the ages of 7 and 10 needs over 1,500 calories a day. Looking at what my grandchildren eat I would agree with that. They are on the small very skinny side, so definitely not overeating.

knittingaddict · 09/04/2023 12:16

Women need around 2,000 and men 2,500 depending on activity levels. There is some serious undereating on MN.

CornishGem1975 · 09/04/2023 12:17

Stuff the calories, not everyone is obsessed!

I easily eat a pizza to myself, as do most people. You rarely see someone sitting in a restaurant eating quarter of a sodding pizza.

DMLady · 09/04/2023 12:19

My teenagers would eat this just between the two of them!

OnaBegonia · 09/04/2023 12:23

Yes, I’m being serious. 3 slices is enough unless it is a small pizza. We’ve always eaten 2 slices and a bit of green salad and that’s dinner as teens/adults.
Guess you're not one the ppl
spending £200pw on food🤷🏼‍♀️
My lot easily wolf a full pizza or half with a side.

JupiterFortified · 09/04/2023 12:31

Am I the only person who eats a whole pizza in one sitting? 😂

I just knew there would be an obesity crisis comment😂
