Apologies for Daily Fail link. These landlords are fighting to keep their collection of extremely racist dolls on display. What possible justification could someone have for having a golliwog on display in this day and age? There is no ambiguity here, golliwogs are vile.

Moment six police officers raid Essex pub and seize 15 golliwog dolls

Benice Ryley, 61, was quizzed by six officers after police received an anonymous complaint about The White Hart Inn in Grays, Essex.

Yes well he's repugnant but that is not unlawful. Also, he got his little collection back as I do not think the police could show he had committed any crime. Whatever people may think, you cannot just confiscate property because it offends.

I'll make a wild guess too - his patrons don't mind either otherwise they wouldn't drink there.

If anyone was ever in any doubt about how much of a rancid cunt this guy is.

It is just awful. 💔

LizzieSiddal · 11/04/2023 18:08

Well at least all decent people will know to avoid that pub.

They really are nasty little racists aren’t they.

No, I come at it from a free speech perspective, the "right to swing your fist ends at my nose" type.

Do you think that, for instance, people should be free to make a living out of jokes about racial minorities, women, and disabled people?

Yes, I think they should be legally allowed to do this, if they can find a willing audience, and get venues and publishers which are willing to host them knowing the consequences when it comes to public opinion, and as long as they don't commit crimes like inciting violence etc.

Do you think it's OK to advertise jobs for whites only or to refuse to promote capable people because they're women?

No, this is dealt with by employment discrimination laws, not hatred or speech laws. It's not what I'm talking about.

Are you squeamish about preventing landlords from putting up signs like "No blacks, no Irish"?

Yes, I'm against housing discrimination. It's also not what I'm talking about.

How far should your protection of freedom of speech go?

About as far as traditional liberal freedom of speech laws have always gone. Yes, there are always edge cases which provoke much discussion, but until quite recently it's been uncontroversial among liberals and leftwing people to say that you think people should be legally allowed to express opinions you disagree with, as long as they're not calling for harm, or actively discriminating against people WRT employment, providing of goods and services, etc. (This is why I mentioned the possibility that having a display of racist dolls in a pub may in practice amount to discrimination in provision of goods or services.)

Shall we leave Tommy Robinson and his delightful friends free to spew hateful fiction and threats towards racial minorities?

They should be legally allowed to express their opinions (though others shouldn't be legally required to host or publish those opinions), but should not be legally allowed to make threats.

I take your points generally, but none the less there is a crime for inciting hatred
“The offence of incitement to hatred occurs when someone acts in a way that is threatening and intended to stir up hatred. That could be in words, pictures, videos, music, and includes information posted on websites. Hate content may include: messages calling for violence against a specific person or group.”

now do those dolls, on display, by themselves fall into the grey area between incitement to hatred or free speech. An extremely difficult one and one tha5 the police are certainly getting wrong at times. It does not take 6 officers to remove some dolls or talk to pub owners quietly to say it could be deemed a crime to have them on public display and maybe keep them behind the public space.
I suspect that they sent 6 police officers because the pub and public an are already well known to police and that they anticipated a kick off and public order offences. Either that or the police were just picking an easy target to get their crime presentation stats up

it’s a hard one in this case, genuine freedom of expression, or because they are on public display a case of incitement to hate.

im not liking woman face drag. Find it reinforces gender stereotypes in their most patronising or sexualised way. I’d like it to go the way of minstrels frankly. I can exactly see why some people find the dolls not just personally offensive but an incitement to hatred in the partronising, belittling, humiliating way some drag artist portray women,

In 1968 when Enoch Powell gave his "rivers of blood" speech I find it incredible that your black grandmother gave you a black face doll. I find it incredible that you as a child in 1968 had a grandparent from an ethnic minority living in the U.K. Your post has more holes in it than a 1968 vintage moth eaten gollywog.

Have you never heard of The Windrush Generation?

AAAAABBBBBCCCCC · 13/04/2023 09:12

we are utterly obsessed with woke now that it's frightening

It is utterly frightening that people are deliberately obtuse and have a rose-tinted hard-on reminiscing about these 'dolls'...

They should be legally allowed to express their opinions (though others shouldn't be legally required to host or publish those opinions), but should not be legally allowed to make threats.

But there's a very fine line between those two, isn't there? It's not OK to threaten to kill or injure black people,, but it's OK to lie that they are thieves and murderers who are out to steal your jobs and rape your daughters, even though that might lead others to go out and kill and injure black people?

crazeecatlady · 13/04/2023 13:11

I've got a black baby doll. She has 3 wooly tufts for hair. Her clothes were interchangable with my white doll. I'm now in my 70s so have no need of either (never did if truth be told). So what do I do with her/them. I also have an ivory necklace (carved elephants - oh the irony!)from the 60's ( a gift from a South African) Ideas for what to do with both please!

6namechang3 · 13/04/2023 13:42

It's against the law to sell ivory items with a few exceptions. You can gift or donate if anyone would actually want it.
https://www.bada.org/antique-ivory

The doll with its three tufts of wool for hair sounds a fairly unappealing object so I would probably bin or recycle . A black baby doll that isn't a racist caricature isn't a controversial item. Just treat in the same way as any other old doll.

potniatheron · 13/04/2023 16:37

I find it hard to get worked up about golliwogs.

I do feel geneuinely worked up about the fact that knife crime has risen 34% over the last decade in London and this mainly affects Black children and young men. That's a race-related problem I think needs lots of media attention. Because it's horrible that talented and loved young men and children are having their futures snuffed out by gang related activity and knife crime.

Golliwogs? Not so bothered mate.

It's possible to care about more than one thing. The existence of knife crime doesn't make the scum who own the pub any less racist.

Of course. I just can't find it in myself to get worked up about some woman's golliwogs.

Didn't they used to be part of the logo for Robinsons jam? It just feels so archaic now, like outdoor loos and clothes mangells. I'm scoobied by all the fuss and bother in the press tbc.

6namechang3 · 13/04/2023 16:48

Wouldn't the world just be a nicer place if people could just think ' Well these dolls obviously offend and upset some people, they are not that important let's not put them on display anymore " That's a better version of it not being a big issue!

Outdoor loos and clothes mangells are not based on racist caricatures.

Are you black, incidentally?

AnnunciataZ · 13/04/2023 17:09

Yeah, given their history I think it's safe to say the pub owners are racist... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/apr/13/essex-police-investigating-golliwog-pub-display-examine-landlord-lynching-post

RosaMoline · 15/04/2023 16:06

I hope they throw the book at this vile racist individual when he returns from Turkey.
I’ve also read that he apparently wore a Britain First T-shirt. His wife defended this & said he just ‘threw it on’ as it was convenient/had nothing else to wear (his BNP t shirt must’ve been in the wash)

ArianahX · 15/04/2023 18:08

Eww hate gollys (can't use the w word as have heard it used offensively and it was just
horrible in that context).

They are very offensive. My mixed race cousins were given black dolls to play with but they were pretty, like black Barbies and Baby Tears Dolls.
Not horrible caricatures that some racist white people used to make of black people.

They belong in the past, in the bin, maybe in a museum to show how stupid and ignorant we once were.
Although obviously some people still are!!

CleverLilViper · 03/05/2023 18:54

Whether you like the dolls or not (I don't for obvious reasons) the really ridiculous thing about this story is that 6 police officers turned up to "deal with this." SIX.

Because of some dolls. Police can't be arsed to show up to burglaries but can absolutely come in, blazing, about some dolls.

Utterly ludicrous. People who don't like the fact that they're hanging the dolls there- can choose to not give the landlords their custom. Loss of revenue may make them rethink their choice of "decoration."

We're living in really odd and potentially scary times when police feel the need to dictate things that are, ultimately, a matter of taste.

Felix125 · 03/05/2023 19:14

This will probably be a search team. 6 officers and a van who are tasked with whatever searches need doing each day for the force/district.

So they may have 10-15 searches to do that day - some will need 6 (or more) - cannabis farms, business premises for fraud, drugs dealers with loads of people present etc etc

Some searches will be relatively quick and will not need 6 - like this one

But they will keep that team together and will travel from search job to the next search job

Oysterbabe · 03/05/2023 19:19

Fantastic.
Couldn't have happened to nicer people.

Not sure I'd describe blatant racism as "a matter of taste".
