Booked to go to Cornwall next week and it’s looking like rain all week, AIBU to feel down about it?

Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

It’ll be fine OP.

I’d be more nervous if wall to wall sunshine was forecast all week. Then you start packing as though you’re going to Spain and get carried away imagining lovely days on the beach, only for the forecast to totally change the day before you leave.

on the plus side- totally clear blue skies become a bit boring after a while. Far more interesting to have some dramatic skies, big waves and chance of rainbows! 🌈

CornishGem1975 · 07/04/2023 13:22

I go to Cornwall a lot, check the weather app when you're there. I often find it's raining on one coastline and not the other...or it can be bloody brutal in Bude but glorious in St Ives, so just have a look at the weather and go wherever it's dry.

@Slitherie what do you do in the evenings with young children? A busy day out (totally agree to exploring) but then back to wherever we are staying and the children could stay up a bit late as we played games 🤷🏼‍♀️. Not every night but if they'd had a long day walking and seeing they loved it.

They are teens now and still enjoy playing cards when we're away!

@tiredhadenough

could go to pub and bring colouring books for them or whatever
or if they’re really small they can be napping in pushchair

YANBU and this is exactly why UK holidays are shit.

Yes this. Never again after spending ££££ for a wet and cold week in Dorset with shit food.

tiredhadenough · 07/04/2023 13:30

@MarshaBradyo I don't think it matters what you say to @Slitherie, I think they'd argue black was white. No understanding of different opinions 🤷🏼‍♀️.

I'd love to find a cheap holiday abroad but in school holidays and with a husband on shift work it's an absolute nightmare. Can't find anything cheaper than a caravan holiday. Maybe the expert could point us all in the right direction 🙄

tiredhadenough · 07/04/2023 13:31

@LuckySantangelo35 🤣🤣🤣 of course, we had a pub bag which had colouring etc in! But every night? My children loved variety and interacting with their parents 🤷🏼‍♀️. Each to their own. Glad you found something that worked for you

@tiredhadenough

you can interact in the pub?!

AgrathaChristie · 07/04/2023 13:33

LubaLuca · 07/04/2023 08:40

I couldn't exactly suggest hide and seek in a caravan.

Variation —- an object is hidden, all the seekers have to cram into the shower room while it’s hidden.

tiredhadenough · 07/04/2023 13:35

@LuckySantangelo35 you can play games at a pub too 😉

WestwardHo1 · 07/04/2023 13:42

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/04/2023 11:50

@WestwardHo1

why not?

going abroad is often way cheaper than holidaying in the UK, especially somewhere like Cornwall.

Well it's not just about money is it? Some people can't go abroad for lots of reasons

And I still maintain its piss poor form when someone is describing their holiday and they're told "that's sounds shit".

hopsalong · 07/04/2023 08:56

Snap. Am trying to console myself that the rain never lasts all day but feel a bit pissed off that there are SO many days of rain forecast. Haven't told kids. They have had lucky weather experiences in Cornwall.
Let's check the forecast again later and keep fingers crossed that it's changed (again)?!

Growing up in Devon on the south coast it used to rain all day when it rained, quite frequently for a few days in a row. I hope Cornwall is different for you

Reinventinganna · 07/04/2023 14:26

It will be okay op. All the attractions have opened up for the holiday makers especially for this purpose.
They close all winter for the locals but open up in April to take some poor wet holiday makers escaping the rain money.

Where in Cornwall are you going?

I’d be really surprised if a holiday abroad is cheaper than a U.K. caravan holiday. Especially for a family,

ChrisPPancake · 07/04/2023 14:26

Pack waterproofs and wellies. Leave anything remotely related to sunny weather at home and with a bit of luck the fates will bless you with decent weather as you're then unprepared for it Grin

LumpySpaceGoddess · 07/04/2023 14:28

We live in Devon and holiday in Cornwall, usually it’s quite nice in spring but typically the week we booked it poured down most of the time but we still went exploring and find some hidden beaches and we visited some cute little villages, we Laos made the most of the indoor swimming pool and had a couple of lazy days just relaxing in the caravan, the only downside we experienced was the fact they had closed the amenities due to covid so no evening entertainment for the kids.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 07/04/2023 14:32

I’m in mid Cornwall & it’s absolutely glorious today ( Good Friday) so hopefully the forecast will be wrong! ☀️☀️☀️

Blueisthecolour1 · 07/04/2023 14:41

Go abroad next year. You can’t guarantee the weather in this country. And the prices are about the same. It’s ridiculous

Winecrispschocolatecats · 07/04/2023 14:43

Ktime · 07/04/2023 12:50

Eden Project is £33.00 - £38.00 per adult ticket

Heligan is £22.50 per adult ticket

Maritime Museum is £16.90 per adult

Cornwall is not cheap!

Eden Project -adult tickets for £8 of Tesco clubcard points 🙂.

Heligan - we paid £58 for a family of 4 in peak season. Not cheap, but not outrageous. We loved it. An escape room would have cost us more for an hour's entertainment, we took a picnic and spent most of the day at Heligan.

Maritime Museum - not one we've been to, sounds quite expensive but there are usually discounts/family rates if that's your bag.

We usually book 3 - 4 activity days a week, making the most of any discounts/Tesco or Nectar offers, with the rest being downtime exploring the local area and driving out into nature. It really doesn't have to cost a fortune at all.

Sirzy · 07/04/2023 14:47

You can’t guarantee the weather abroad either. I have been to Minorca in august and still had rain pretty much all week.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/04/2023 14:53

We went on holiday to Cornwall for years since our kids were babies so have been to most suggestions on this thread. What we found is that it when it rains EVERYONE heads to the same sort of place, like the aquarium or the maritime museum and they become rammed and unpleasant. Visiting indoor attractions also adds pounds and pounds to the cost of your holiday, and the price of selfcatering accommodation has really shot up since COVID, so I don't blame families on a budget with hoping that they can spend their time at the beach or visiting cheaper outdoor attractions. It's also very tedious having to eat picnics in the car in the pouring rain day after day because you can't afford to eat in cafes every lunchtime.

So yeah, OP, I do feel sorry for you if the weather is shit. We long since gave up on Cornwall holidays because I was sick of the rain, and our kids were 13/14 so had grown out of the likes of Lappa Valley or Dairyland. It really irritated to sit looking out at a nice garden and barbecue that you haven't been able to use all week. One or even 2 rainy days are ok but when it's every day it's annoying. You spend most of the arrival day just getting there so that's one day of your holiday gone anyway. So you end up spending megabucks for a 6 day holiday where it rains 5 of the days? No thankyou. It just isn't good value for money.

C1239 · 07/04/2023 14:56

Thank you for everyone’s replies ! We are going to the Looe area. I know a lot of it is mindset I think it just makes it harder to have a great time if you are getting rained on every day!!

The world divided into two types of people. Those who think there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. And those who think it's miserable being out and about in the wet, cold and wind.

I'm in the latter camp. I do not enjoy going out in crap weather.

Yeah, I'm with you. These threads always bring it home to me that, although I was born here, I'm not really British (my heritage is all west Asian/southern Mediterranean).

Grey, drizzly, cold weather isn't something that makes me wanto zip up my cagoule and go cheerily marching along digging in rockpools. It makes me want to kill myself.

Also, not being northern European, I can't digest dairy or wheat in any form. A few days in the proper sun and I am transformed.

I have long ago given up on UK holidays. If I can't go abroad, would far, far rather be at home, than pay to be somewhere else with shit weather, overpriced 'attractions' full of miserable, arsey people, and without any of my home comforts.

If you go to Greece, southern Italy, or southern Spain any time between May to September it is not going to rain

Derbee · 07/04/2023 15:00

YABU to book a holiday in the UK, especially in April, and be surprised that rain is forecast.

1stTimeMama · 07/04/2023 15:01

I live in Cornwall. There's approximately 13 days a year bit doesn't rain!
