Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

No but hide and seek in the woods would be fun. Does Cornwall have woods? I’ve never been. Never fancied it personally, I always imagine it to to be busy and wolf fleece

You've outed yourself there with the wolf fleece comment, I bet you're fifth generation Cornish 😄

Maireas · 07/04/2023 15:02

To be honest, staying in a caravan in any type of weather is my idea of hell, but each to their own.

HelpMeGetThrough · 07/04/2023 15:02

I don’t think you’re playing the right kind of board games 😉**

Monogamy is not a "family friendly" board game!!! 🤷‍♂️

I’m in mid Cornwall & it’s absolutely glorious today ( Good Friday) so hopefully the forecast will be wrong! ☀️☀️☀️

@SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows it's a lovely day down here in Cornwall isn't it!

bumblebeees · 07/04/2023 15:07

Great suggestions! A steam train ride in the rain is lovely. And I’d forgotten the galleries

Steam trains in the rain are often not lovely when the rain is terrible. Visibility becomes very poor, the windows steam up or the rivulets of rain running down the windows mean that you can't see anything of the nice scenery. They're not cheap either. I mean, when you have kids with you you just have to make the most of it and make it seem like an adventure, but there is not many who would say it's equally as lovely as a ride on one in blue skies and sunshine, even if it's very cold. Grey skies , drizzle and mist just aren't that nice to look out on.

@WestwardHo1

why not?

going abroad is often way cheaper than holidaying in the UK, especially somewhere like Cornwall.

Some of us can't afford a holiday anywhere.

Growing up in Devon on the south coast it used to rain all day when it rained, quite frequently for a few days in a row. I hope Cornwall is different for you

I live in south Devon and find the opposite, if I get up and it's nice but the forecast isn't great I hurry out to enjoy it while it lasts. If it's raining in the morning we plan to go out in the afternoon as it frequently changes after lunch. Although I will admit last month was different and I think it rained all month never mind all day.

Eden Project -adult tickets for £8 of Tesco clubcard points 🙂.

Heligan - we paid £58 for a family of 4 in peak season. Not cheap, but not outrageous. We loved it. An escape room would have cost us more for an hour's entertainment, we took a picnic and spent most of the day at Heligan.

Maritime Museum - not one we've been to, sounds quite expensive but there are usually discounts/family rates if that's your bag.

We usually book 3 - 4 activity days a week, making the most of any discounts/Tesco or Nectar offers, with the rest being downtime exploring the local area and driving out into nature. It really doesn't have to cost a fortune at all.

It costs a hell of a lot more than a sunny week on the beach. My town doesn't have a Tesco so clubcard points wouldn't help me.

@C1239 I know some people poo pooed games but can I suggest (and sorry if you do this already) that you carry a pack of cards. From a young age we played old maid and then as they got older moved to shit head (you don't need to call it that!)

Games in tins are great too so if you are sheltering in a cafe you can whip out avocado smash or sushi go.

I'm sure you'll have a lovely time

MavisCruet2023 · 07/04/2023 16:00

I hate the rain. I hate the wind too.
I'd cancel and stay at home.

I’d be really surprised if a holiday abroad is cheaper than a U.K. caravan holiday. Especially for a family,

Yup. Especially if you can do out of school holidays. It's possible to sort a cheap weekend by the sea for an entire family for under £200 - can't do that abroad.

Killing time in a cafe playing novelty card games isn't really enjoyable though, is it? More just getting through the day. Why pay to go on holiday and do that?

This thread has been informative. Things to do on a UK holiday;

  1. Colouring books
  2. Hide and seek in the woods
  3. Boards games

I'd rather stay hone tbh

bellabasset · 07/04/2023 16:16

Looe is where the spin off series to Death in Paradise has been filmed and isn't too far from Trago Mills, which is an enormous store but it's an unusual building with lots of turrets and in an attractive setting in the Fowey river valley, there's peacocks and aviary. Well worth a visit. Cheap meals with deals for children. It's a forest like setting not far from Cardinham Woods on the outskirts of Bodmin near Lanhydrock, there's cycling there.

StarryGazeyEyes · 07/04/2023 16:18

If you're the Looe end of Cornwall then Morwellham Quay has a good mix of indoors and outdoors stuff. If you're NT members there's Cotehele, which always has stuff on for Easter. There's some lovely walks out on the Rame peninsula, and you can get a boat across to Looe Island. Also the little ferry across from Bodinnick to Fowey. Lots of good beaches on that stretch for rock pooling.

Maireas · 07/04/2023 16:27

There are some great suggestions on here. However, in the pouring rain, many wouldn't be tremendous fun.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 07/04/2023 16:31

It's all very well saying "wear waterproofs and wellies and go anyway" but not everyone likes trudging around being damp and sweaty all day.

I work outdoors all year round and I have all the gear, but I would still absolutely hate to spend my annual leave walking around a bunch of overpriced tourist attractions in the pissing rain - inevitably with damp clothing and sore feet.

Some people are quite happy to be out in all weathers - and good for them - but I don't know they act like it's some kind of moral failing if you say you'd rather be warm and dry indoors somewhere Grin

Maireas · 07/04/2023 16:36

Exactly, @coffeecupsandwaxmelts - rock pooling, cycling, boating and being on the beach are miserable in the rain.

Sirzy · 07/04/2023 14:47

You can’t guarantee the weather abroad either. I have been to Minorca in august and still had rain pretty much all week.

You were so unlucky to have that.

The Med is pretty much guaranteed June-September. We always go to the Balearics or Greece and pretty much 95% of the time nothing but sunshine. The odd cloudy day if its been early June and the odd thunderstorm. I wont even risk Northern France (as much as i’d like to visit) as theres too many forums saying expect weather like Cornwall if you go in Summer 😀

😂😂 northerner through and through

we do get wolf fleeces up here but they tend to be confined to the seaside thankfully

MarshaBradyo · 07/04/2023 13:00

Is that cheaper than a caravan in Cornwall though?

It’s a hell of a lot more desirable

Roundaboutabee · 07/04/2023 17:03

Writing this from a caravan in Cornwall. We’ve spent the day on the beach and whilst it was hiking boots rather than flip flops it was fine. I walked a mile or so off the coastal path whilst DH supervised some epic sandcastle building and then we swapped, then had a pub lunch.

we also have brought several board games with us. Azul Queen’s Garden, Ticket To Ride, Duel, Monster Madness and Genius Square. I’ve read two books and not watched a minute of tv.

I went to the beach on Tuesday in the rain (after playing ticket to ride).

St Michael’s Mount was busy yesterday but for the pp who asked, book the earliest tickets for the day. Beach was deserted.

if you could find me a cheaper way to holiday abroad as a family of 5 I’d be really grateful. Because however depressing it is to be in a caravan in England in April it is expensive to go abroad and that’s without dealing with the epic fuck up of border controls our country has made since Brexit.

op hope your weather next week is better than expected.

Fullrecoveryispossible · 07/04/2023 17:04

We are in Cornwall right now and the forecast a few days ago was looking pretty grim for this week. However it’s beautiful sunshine right now! If you’re a hardy family, who can have fun whatever the weather, still come. In fact, my favourite time of year to come here is winter. Bracing cliff walks, rock pooling in the rain and a well-deserved pint at the pub after. Enjoyment for me comes from putting a bit of effort in and getting out! Enjoy your holiday 🙂

100% this.
That's not a holiday - that's purgatory.
