Booked to go to Cornwall next week and it’s looking like rain all week, AIBU to feel down about it?

Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

You get your waterproofs on and do it anyway! Most stuff in Cornwall has insides too, you just have to roll with the weather and tog up. Use it as an excuse for a hot chocolate or some chips

The world divided into two types of people. Those who think there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. And those who think it's miserable being out and about in the wet, cold and wind.

I'm in the latter camp. I do not enjoy going out in crap weather.

All fab suggestions that don't cost a fortune. Another one I'd highly recommend is Bodmin Jail - fascinating place and a wonderful tour. Kids loved it too.

Eden Project is £33.00 - £38.00 per adult ticket

Heligan is £22.50 per adult ticket

Maritime Museum is £16.90 per adult

Cornwall is not cheap!

That’s RIDICULOUS for the Eden project!!

Have to agree

there is nothing like getting out of your country and experiencing another and its culture

Is there genuinely any need to make the OP feel shittier?

Mumsnet can be great at times but sometimes I really do wonder what’s wrong with people.

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 07/04/2023 12:53

We were in Dorset last week and the weather was pretty grim but we’d gone prepared and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on empty beaches and cliff walks.
I certainly didn’t expect good weather and DDog doesn’t care about rain.
It helps if you’re well prepared, sun is a bonus!

TheaBrandt · 07/04/2023 12:55

With teens we only do city breaks now out of summer. What is there to do rurally when the weather is shit? And no hiking in the rain is not fun. Gives me flashbacks to being a rural teen.

Sgtmajormummy · 07/04/2023 12:55

We’re going to Devon in late April (our annual timeshare week, but first time since Covid) and are planning a day trip to St Michael’s Mount and maybe Tolgus Mill Cornish Gold centre.
Any opinions?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 07/04/2023 12:55

I don't think you've said whether you have (young) children? I don't agree with "oh, just make the most of it!" with very young kids - I've done it enough and often find it difficult, stressful and boring. If you are adults / adults with older kids then you orientate yourself towards either better clothing or indoor activities.

that comment was not about the op

more in response to those posters who talk about the uk being the only place the wanna holiday etc

Board games? Boring. Can do at home.
Treats? elaborate?

Cornwall is a gamble anytime of the year OP. We go every year but nice weather is game changing. Depending on where in cornwall you go if it's raining you're only left with a million pub lunches and rainy cold walks.

FFS, 'elaborate'?! I was making very vague suggestions to try to reassure the op that they'll have a grand time no matter how much the weather limits them. I'm not a caravan holiday expert, but I assume someone going on one does not have limitless funds for entertainment.

jamdonut · 07/04/2023 12:07

Never quite understood why anyone thinks that to have a good holiday you have to have wall to wall sunshine. You can still visit places in the rain and have a great time, children or no. The UK is an amazing place, if you just put a little effort into investigating what’s in the area you’re visiting.

Because constant rain is miserable. Plus when it's hot you cab swim in the sea or pool. Beats sittings in a crappy caravan listening to rain fall on the roof

MeinKraft · 07/04/2023 12:58

Ewock · 07/04/2023 12:30

😂🤣 of course I forgot the UK is one culture only.
I would love to be able to afford to take my kids to wonderful places I've visited in the past, however this isn't possible. But I can assure you they have great holidays and fantastic memories. Learning about the history of a variety of places in the UK.
I think saying the UK is shit for holidays, as a pp did, is rather ignorant and generalizing.

Yeah it's daft to say that. You can visit four different nations within the UK, each with its own culture, language and landscape. There are few places with so many well preserved historical sites you can visit, and with beautiful coastline and gardens, lakes, rivers and mountains within driving distance of pretty much anywhere in the country. We are very lucky to live in a picturesque and relatively safe country with mild and pleasant weather and should make the most of what we have here.

Board games 😂 you could do that at home! How boring!

@Slitherie why are you being so horrible?? No need. Just none.

@C1239 sunshine would be lovely. My Ban woukd have said 'Oh it'll blow through' and obviously she was right! That's not to say you'll be there when it's blowing through or not 🙇🏻‍♀️

who are you going with?

part of the enjoyment us just being away & not thinking about all the things you should be doing.

I like walking in the rain!

I'm envious of your week away, in a caravan (where you can hear the rain properly) & you can walk the beach & have fish & chips on the seafront!

if you're not taking very small children, then reading a book in peace, no
pressure to boring jobs sounds lovely!!

I love board games on holiday because whilst I could do it at home there's always something more important to do and its difficult to make the time to sit down and just play. A chunk of time without distraction to play a game is just lovely.

Slitherie · 07/04/2023 12:41

No, Air B&B

DH and I had our honeymoon in Venice, stayed in a little apartment across the water from the main bit, short boat ride everyday, cost around £1500 altogether and that was with splashing out once we got there.

Is that cheaper than a caravan in Cornwall though?

Sounds lovely. St Michaels Mount is on my bucket list.

God I hate UK holidays. Unutterably depressing. How could you not want to go somewhere DIFFERENT? Hear different voices, eat new food, experience a different way of life, an unfamiliar culture. I don't want to eat shit provincial UK pub food and visit castles in the fucking drizzle.

I drove to Cumbria yesterday. Absolutely breath taking. There are sections where you come over the crest of a hill and you see the sun falling through the clouds and its so beautiful it doesn't look real. The beach is perfect and sandy and mostly very quiet. There's previous little to "do" or eat - we usually have to cook there if we don't want pizza - but a few hours scrambling over rocks or building sandcastles does us all good.

It's not a holiday for everyone but it's n amazing one for some of us.

SpringHasSprung23 · 07/04/2023 13:07

Slitherie · 07/04/2023 08:42

No but hide and seek in the woods would be fun. Does Cornwall have woods? I’ve never been. Never fancied it personally, I always imagine it to to be busy and wolf fleece

@Slitherie

behave!

why don't you go & piss on your own chips instead of trying to bring other people down?

NoTouch · 07/04/2023 13:08

We used to do Cornwall every year when ds was young, but after a very rainy week in a lodge, with nowhere to properly dry damp clothes, a bored pre schooler and nowhere to get a bit of space we never went back.

This was nearly 20 years ago and there was fuck all to do in Cornwall when the weather was bad, everything was designed around beaches and outdoors. We are from Scotland so very used to putting jackets on and getting on with it for a day or two, after all your skin is waterproof, but there is only so much slashing in puddles with a toddler you can do before everything is wet and Cornwall was ridiculously short of indoor things to do for a week of non stop rain.

Hope the forecast improves OP!

@Slitherie what do you do in the evenings with young children? A busy day out (totally agree to exploring) but then back to wherever we are staying and the children could stay up a bit late as we played games 🤷🏼‍♀️. Not every night but if they'd had a long day walking and seeing they loved it.

They are teens now and still enjoy playing cards when we're away!
