Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

Killing time in a cafe playing novelty card games isn't really enjoyable though, is it? More just getting through the day. Why pay to go on holiday and do that?

@tiredhadenough
this!

100% this.
That's not a holiday - that's purgatory.

yep!

not to mention very average bit extremely over priced pub meals

We've just come back from Cornwall. We had a couple of wet days. Still went out every day. Funny someone mentioned how crap the Eden project is because we ended up there on our wettest day and it was fantastic. Great Easter activities for the kids. Mostly indoors buy some outdoors. I would suggest taking a packed lunch though as almost all the food had run-out by 2pm that day.

tiredhadenough · 07/04/2023 17:33

@LuckySantangelo35 @Bamboux

I so hope I don't know either of you in real life.

OP has a holiday booked, she's going. Trying to support and give options seems to be a nice thing to do 🤷🏼‍♀️. Also my children love a holiday where games are part of it, we regularly have games night in our house so it's part of what our family do with friends. I know not your idea of fun but we're all different (thank goodness). We're doers as well, we explore see different things, plan lots of activities on holiday, that's OUR idea of a holiday. We're not a sit still in the sun lot!

People have differing ideas of holiday as to me an all inclusive feels like purgatory. Not my idea of fun at all.

I really hope in real life you are supportive of your friends' choices and not as dismissive of what they will be doing.

ArticSaviour · 07/04/2023 17:41

@C1239 - if I was looking at a possible rainy week in Looe I would be thinking about Lanhydrock (near Bodmin), Polperro if the kids are young, Fowey or Lostwithiel for lunch and a wander round the shops, train to Plymouth for the day (beautiful journey).

Further afield, Maritjme Museum and Telegraph Museum are both excellent.

Eden is expensive, but we go twice in the week and always find something new to see/do. Also love Heligan.

bellabasset · 07/04/2023 17:41

Another place as well as Morwelham Quay is Dingles Fairground Museum, with indoor rides.

Cornwallintherain · 07/04/2023 17:45

Another Cornish person who thinks Eden is a pile of shit.

No but hide and seek in the woods would be fun. Does Cornwall have woods? I’ve never been. Never fancied it personally, I always imagine it to to be busy and wolf fleece

‘Wolf fleece’ as an adjective is great 😂

We’re in Devon at the moment and it’s stunnnnning, not a cloud in the sky and no wind at the beach!!! Perfect!! Really hope it stays like this for you OP.

Hamsterrace · 07/04/2023 17:54

I'm so surprised at all the Eden Project hate. We bloody love it there and go about once a month. Although we have a locals pass so get free entry for a year. It is very expensive for a single trip.

I also recommend the seal sanctuary at Gweek! My dc love the underwater viewing area where you can watch the fat seals gliding upside down in the water. They do a fancy twist and swim upwards just before they hit the viewing glass which makes the kids laugh.

We went to Newquay in February and a few of the arcades were open if your dc like that sort of thing.

its not about being dismissive of OP’s holiday plans. It’s about validating her feelings. She herself in her original post said that she feels disappointed and a bit meh about it now that the weather isn’t going to be good. She’s entitled to feel that way as are other people on here 🤷‍♀️

Hamsterrace · 07/04/2023 18:03

I also recommend McDonald's Farm in Padstow. It's a campsite but you can visit for food and drink. It has a lovely bar and restaurant area, huge play field for the kids, play park with huge sandpit, horses, pigs, goats, rabbits, etc. The food is a bit pricey but really good.

I wouldn't go to an all-inclusive or 'sit still in the sun' if you paid me.

How weird that you think that's the only alternative to sitting in a bloody caravan all hiding in the shower while someone hides a potato.

We go to cities, towns, islands, we go on long walks in the countryside or in mountains, visit historical sites, ruins, galleries and museums, try out bars and restaurants, explore markets and different areas of cities, go on long train journeys, swim in the sea/rivers. Mostly done on the cheap and by being adventurous/not needing luxury.

If I was facing the prospect of a week spent hiding in a crappy English cafe eating overpriced toasties and playing cards to kill time while it rains I would just save myself the money and the hassle and stay at home. Where we can play board games if we want to. It's not a holiday is it? It's just suffering somewhere else.

Cornishclio · 07/04/2023 18:18

I live in Cornwall and it is lovely and sunny today. It can be changeable and it is rare to get rain all day. There may be showers though. Not sure where you are staying or if you have kids but there is lots to do even if the weather isn't brilliant. Just come prepared with wet weather gear anyway.

Cornishclio · 07/04/2023 18:23

C1239 · 07/04/2023 14:56

Thank you for everyone’s replies ! We are going to the Looe area. I know a lot of it is mindset I think it just makes it harder to have a great time if you are getting rained on every day!!

I have been to Looe today. It was stunning in the sunshine so I hope it lasts for you. If not there are options of places to go. Lots of nice restaurants and cafes.

OldFan · 07/04/2023 18:23

@C1239 I don't know what there is around Looe, but I always go to North Cornwall- Trebarwith Strand, Tintagel, Bodcastle etc etc. You don't even have to walk in any rain there much really. You can see the lovely views from pubs/cafes. Smile

FrenchandSaunders · 07/04/2023 18:26

We camped in Cornwall one august bank holiday for a week and it pissed down continually. I don’t know why we didn’t just pack up and go home.

Our DDs were early teens (now early 20s) and bizarrely have very fond memories of that week!! Despite having been to other wonderful countries they talk about this the most.

faffadoodledo · 07/04/2023 18:57

@C1239
We were in Looe last weekend. Lovely. Think you can hire SUPs and kayaks and paddle up the river. That's ok even in a bit or mizzle (Cornish word for a cross between drizzle and mist).
If all else fails you can also get in a train in Looe or Liskeard and visit Plymouth - National Marine Aquarium is giood. And I've also heard good reports of a the Box - a newish gallery/museum.

We should holiday together 😂 this is exactly the type of holiday we enjoy. Adventure and exploring - not sat in a cafe playing board games looking out the window at the rain. I can’t think of anything more depressing. And like you said, exploring can be done cheaply, you don’t need to stay at the Hilton. One of the most memorable nights I ever had was sleeping in a mud built Hogan (a mud hut) in Utah. No electric, no running water, dirt floor … I’ll never ever forget it

Had a similar experience in Devon once, it was the kids first camping trip and it was brutal. We did actually cut our trip short by 3 days but they loved it. And I've taken them all over the world, yet playing in the tent while the rain lashed it down is still their favourite time.

WaltzingWaters · 07/04/2023 20:37

I live in Cornwall. Today was supposed to be cloudy and 11 degrees. It’s been brilliant sunshine and 20 degrees. You may get lucky. The rain may be minimal and just in intervals. Either way, there’s lots of indoor activities. Fingers crossed for some sunshine for you (and me!)

Windingdown · 07/04/2023 20:40

I'm so glad some people are saying they and their children have happy memories of wet holidays and the card games/board games times. We
do too and I was beginning to think it was just me.

Cosied up with hot chocolate playing games, snugging up in the campsite barn with pizza from the van and going in the sea because we couldn't get any wetter then having fish and chips in a cafe. I thought these WERE the good times.

Moveforward · 07/04/2023 20:46

Polperro has a art cafe see if they have any children's art classes scheduled - called.Coffee Cake Create
Looe used to have a paint a pot and the heritage centre has a small.climbing wall facility.
Porfell animal land and the monkey sanctuary are a close ish drive.
Rockpooling at Hannafore - watch the tide
Putting at bowling green at hannafore
Tennis possibly at Hannafore (not sure.if have to be a member)
Walk up.Kilminorth Woods - end.of millpond car park
Some of these are outside I know. Just ideas as.weather might be changeable not awful

ClassicLib · 07/04/2023 20:51

I can understand why you’re disappointed, but YABU, obviously. Cornwall is the warmest part of the U.K., but it’s also one of the wettest parts of the country and spring everywhere is very late this year. It snowed heavily as far south as Leicestershire less than a month ago, if you remember.
As with any outdoor activity in the U.K. at any time of the year, plan & prepare for rain and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 07/04/2023 22:03

We've had several holidays in Wales where the forecast has shown rain - but when we've got there and looked at the daily forecast, the rain is often only fir a couple of hours first thing, or around tea time so has been easily avoidable by planning our activities .

Have a look into a few tourist attractions close by (I can see you've been given a few suggestions here) and plan a couple of days' activities in case the rain does become unavoidable. Are you staying on a site with activities ? Is there WiFi available ?

Cheesyfootballs01 · 07/04/2023 22:08

I mean, I’m not really sure what sort of weather you were expecting in April? It doesn’t start to warm up in the UK until at least May/June 🤷🏻‍♀️

I live In Cornwall and I rarely take notice of the forecast as it’s often forecast rain and it’s lovely and sunny!

At the end of the day it’s booked now so you can either go and crack on or cancel and stay home.
