Don't be so disingenuous - the OP is promoting Gript, a rightwing neoconservative anti-choice outlet who have sought to invade libraries and spread misinformation.

The OP has linked to a media source where the people protesting were interviewed and calmly stated their concerns, the counter protesters were given an opportunity to speak but...well the footage speaks for itself. You have posted links which describe those parents as invaders but gives little detail about the specifics of their concerns which proves part of my point.

I do not need to know or agree with the politics of Gript to listen to the voices of those parents. My political views have not been packaged as an ideology and delivered to me, I prefer to assess every argument on its merits and evidence.

If you are unaware of the larger discussion about RSE materials and safeguarding then perhaps you should find out a bit more before accusing people of being disingenuous.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 15:25

@SertralineAndTherapy but why was it on a recommended book list for children? Who researched it?

It looks like Children's Books Ireland put it on their "Under 18s" list (it's aimed at 16+) and then someone carelessly added it in the HSE Junior Cycle resource list. But as that list has now been taken down, it's hard to check whether it was aimed at students or teachers!

You'll note that the spec says that teachers should develop their own lessons to cover the topics based on their own school policies. Can't imagine that it made its way into any actual lessons, can you?

@SertralineAndTherapy as an educator surely you are aware of this new proposed sex education curriculum?
This is shockingly inappropriate & there will continue to be a major pushback.

Parents will have right to withdraw children from new sex education classes

Sharp division over teaching of gender identity and use of pronouns in updated sex education syllabus

And the lady with the American accent in the video has made it into the Phoenix for her interesting connections.

Well it looks likes they're putting all their energy into a proper cause now. Good on them. Lots of support under the article on Facebook. Ordinary people are horrified.

@Bláthannabuí I'm in the UK, and similar things are happening here; but that is a completely different thread! I just think that there's a huge difference between something being on an optional reading list, and something being part of the actual required content, and your original posts seem to have been muddling the two up. I do agree with you that the particular book somehow made its way into the wrong age-group.

SunscreenCentral · 07/04/2023 15:37

These are lies. Actual lies.
I and many other people (parents included) in Ireland are very unhappy about right wing infection from the US, it's clearly taken root in the UK it's starting to happen of late in Ireland.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 15:40

Really @SunscreenCentral all the parents I know are delighted. The pushback has well & truely started. Why is RTÉ not reporting?

I do not need to know or agree with the politics of Gript to listen to the voices of those parents. I prefer to be better informed. Just because someone is a parent doesn't mean they're not politically motivated, and as Gript amplifies the voices of those who are anti-vaccination, anti-choice and anti-migrant I've no wish to take them as an authority on anything.

@whatchaos this is the third time I've asked you for RTEs links? I've searched for them but can't find them!

Well that concerned dad with two little girls said it on video. Look at all the comments under the video people are appalled at what the department of education were infiltrating into the system. The author stated herself it was NOT for children. There is no argument defending this book being on the curriculum.

Have you read the book @Bláthannabuí

Why are you so obsessed with RTE? They have dedicated a lot of time to discussion of the new RSE curriculum.
eg here where as the speaker says, pornography is mentioned just once and how it might lead to a thwarted view of relationships. https://www.rte.ie/radio/radio1/clips/22122605/

New Sex Education - Colman Noctor

The new draft Junior Cert curriculum is out today and there is a new education on sex being added, Colman Noctor joins Ray to discuss.

@WithFlamingLocksOfAuburnHair he was not at the peaceful parents protest yesterday.
Also he purchased the book he tore up himself in protest. If it was a library book he would have been arrested for damaging public property!

Because you are bitching about the Gript. It's the only place we parents can get information & the 500 comments under the video all agree. Why haven't RTÉ covered this???

OP posts:
Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 15:54

@Flounder2022 No good. They don't mention the removal of a adult book with pornograhic material that was on a children's reading list recommended by the department of education. A major win for parents that it was withdrawn so quickly
The peaceful parent protest yesterday was not covered either.

OP posts:
Coyoacan · 07/04/2023 15:54

Ok, the news media is dicey and some of the protesters are too, but that doesn't detract from the fact that that sado-masochist book was recommended reading for twelve year olds.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 15:55

He attended the library accompanied by friendly Gardaí who let four of the peaceful parent protesters in for 15 minutes. I believe he was one of the four. I am very pleased he has found a cause that will benefit all the children of Ireland as it certainly seems our government & department of education don't have their best interests at heart.

The practical reality is that if your 12 year old doesn't have access to unfiltered internet (possibly while you are obliviously unaware they've got around your filters) one of their friends will.
At this age they are encountering porn and talking about extreme sex acts and conservative parents going 'NAH NAH NAH I DON'T LIKE IT' isn't going to change that.
I think there needs to be measured discussion of how to educate on this topic, and some of the currently handling is poorly done as educators struggle to catch up with the current societal realities without overshooting and giving too much information.
But adolecents are going to encounter porn, gay sex, and kink and they need to prepared to understand safe sex beyond 'use a contraceptive if a penis goes in a vagina', which will include some degree of being informed about things that might be considered extreme. If they aren't recieving any education, they're just get their information from the internet and gossip and be put at greater risk.

No. Just stop.
