I know I should be doing other things, but I've had another look at the actual website for the curriculum. The "recommended reading" lists aren't there for most topics, as the news articles say, but there is one left at the bottom of this page:
https://www.hse.ie/eng/about/who/healthwellbeing/hse-education-programme/junior-cycle-sphe-training-resources/understanding-ourselves-unit-of-learning/

I think that's enough to show that at least some of the reading lists were aimed at teachers rather than students!

Well now.
Do we think it's more likely that a. these misunderstood peaceful parents have put their dodgy far right, anti immigration, rioting pasts behind them to focus purely on the wellbeing of children or b. have found the perfect vehicle to get concerned parents onside to their cause by cloaking it in the language of child protection?

TheKeatingFive · 07/04/2023 16:05

People are getting heartily sick of their reasonable concerns being shut down by yells of 'far right'.

That book should never have been in a junior cycle resource list. There are questions to be answered as to how it found it's way on there.

If gript are highlighting this, fair play to them. Similarly holding Varadkars feet to the fire on Barbie Khardashian.

Because you are bitching about the Gript. It's the only place we parents can get information & the 500 comments under the video all agree. Why haven't RTÉ covered this???

Why haven't RTÉ covered this??? I don't know, I don't work for RTÉ! Take it up with someone who does, and please stop asking me for links, it's really very strange.

Exactly. Just as their anti-migrant stance is dressed up as concern for young Irish girls and women.

Yes it's a bit tiresome isn't it. Especially to a lifelong socialist and supporter of women's and gay rights like mise mé féin.

Good on them, their parents themselves. This is a worthy cause they can throw themselves into. Hopefully they can get women back our single sex spaces too.

Because RTÉ are partaking in state sponsored censorship. It's run by the government. They don't want us knowing this. It's all part of the narrative.

I am full of reasonable concerns myself but also trying to learn by keeping an open mind to the source of my information and looking beyond the person to their motives and background. Why would Gript, the John McGuirk vehicle, be all over this? His past doesn't suggest a passion for the rights of women and girls. It's not crying far right to point out that the far right are all over this, why? Again, I don't remember them being prominent in other topics on women's and children's rights. I don't for a minute doubt the motives of people on this thread but I very much do theirs.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/04/2023 16:14

This is what the far right do. Take a legitimate fear that people have, then amplify it and twist it. All the time they are doing this, they sweep up people into the cause who are unaware of the overall aim of the organisers.

Everyone should be all over this. The fact that the left aren't is entirely on them and raises very concerning questions of its own.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 16:19

Well look at the left protesters in the video yesterday! They were wonderful advocates for their cause weren't they!
Concerned parents suddenly far right. Well they got their way, the books removed. Good on them.
Now hopefully they'll advocate for getting back our single sex areas.

Genuine question do you think Gript is a balanced media outlet?

Are you at all concerned that people who may have concerns when they hear 'pornography is being taught in school to children' and land on their site are presented with racist, anti vac, covid denying bullshit?

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 16:20

Scary how few people see it.

Reminds me of the Liberal.ie strat, seemingly a 'balanced' news outlet till they had the numbers and then the narrative changes!

I'm afraid you've misunderstood my post, whether wilfully or because I wasn't clear enough. I've not called concerned parents far right. Those agitating behind them most certainly are.

CherryCokeFanatic · 07/04/2023 16:24

I’m not watching an 11 minute video. But is there actually evidence of the content they claim is being shown to kids?

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 16:26

Yes it was on the department of educations recommend reading list. Even the first 2 minutes will inform you.

The lady & man speaking are very concerned, upset parents who are not buying the bullshit we're being fed any longer.

I completely agree that it shouldn't be on a reading list aimed at 12 year-olds. Some heads should roll if that were the case.

But the one "recommended reading" list I've found and linked to earlier was very clearly aimed at their teachers. Plus, how many kids will go to the Government website to find a reading list for Junior Cycle SPHE?

I'd be more worried if any teacher actually put it into a lesson plan or printed off the list to hand out, or if were in any pre-prepped teaching resource pack; but is there any evidence that's happened?
