Not RTÉ.

Fair enough, not RTE but you said Irish parents would have been in the dark if not for Gript and that's not true.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 13:21

Did the other news outlets post the parents protest in Swords. No. Did they share the video footage. No.
RTÉ is the countries main news source.
We pay 160 euro annually for our TV licenses & we are not being informed about what's happening. The removal of the book from the curriculum is major news for most parents & it has gone unreported. This is state controlled censorship & well done to the Gript for getting out in support with the parents. God knows we need it. The country is a disgrace.

@Eann it doesn't exist - the term is 'anal fisting' (see also 'vaginal fisting', or obviously don't if you'd rather not).

'Pumping' in a sex/porn context is something else altogether, and 'fist pumping' is exactly what it's always been and nothing to do with any of it Smile

WithFlamingLocksOfAuburnHair · 07/04/2023 13:31

I don't see any evidence of indoctrination. My kids' school shares with us the sensitive topics they're teaching, and it's very vague, Catholic Church safe, stuff. And at the same time while you might keep your own child safe from Internet harm half the class have phone with no supervision. I don't believe the schools, especially the Catholic ones, are giving kids the skills they need to navigate the world. Now that doesn't mean that I think they need explicit reading material, but I think the real indoctrination is the religious control of our schools. I can't reconcile the idea that the CC is patron of all these schools teaching explicit sex ed to young kids.

ExtraOnions · 07/04/2023 13:31

Gript … when I want to find out news from an anti-abortion, anti-immigration, anti-vaccine, climate change denying site, with dodgy funding, and links to companies famous for data breeches … I’ll let you know.

if you can send me the link, from the official website, of the curriculum, showing “anal fisting” in their as a topic - maybe I’ll change my mind.

…or a link from a non right-wing site …

shivawn · 07/04/2023 13:36

Thanks for posting OP. I'm in Ireland but I hadn't heard of this before now, my child isn't yet school going age. I've also never heard of Gript before today....I must be living under a rock. I'm with you though, it sounds very inappropriate.

AgrathaChristie · 07/04/2023 13:40

How can we ever hope to stop child sexual abuse when this stuff is in school?
If it had happened when I was a teacher ( long ago) I’d have refused to teach, handle or have anything to do with it. I’m sickened that my dgc might be exposed to this v

Link from Fox News … you may as well link the Beano

There is nothing in the curriculum, or the teaching materials than mentions Anal Fisting

Far right dog-whistling

Absolutely. And images doing the rounds about so-called fist pumping that aren't even from the books the fascist idiots are trying to ban and destroy.

whatchaos · 07/04/2023 13:43

So OP - you have been asked a number of times, where exactly is this on the curriculum?

whatchaos · 07/04/2023 13:46

FOJN · 07/04/2023 12:43

You need to be careful celebrating Gript. They are jumping on the trans topic to appeal to an audience that would otherwise run a mile.

Gript wouldn't even be a footnote in this discussion if the MSM did its job. The nature of RSE in nearly the whole western world needs to be scrutinised for safeguarding failures and despite the alarm being sounded many times the MSM only choses to report if they can portray concerned parents as narrow minded bigots.

When you describe a desire for safeguarding as 'far right' you alienate large sections of society who assumed that robust safeguarding of children was a universally accepted and apolitical value.

If there is no problem with the RSE material being used then why do so many schools make it difficult for parents to view it?

Don't be so disingenuous - the OP is promoting Gript, a rightwing neoconservative anti-choice outlet who have sought to invade libraries and spread misinformation.

Coyoacan · 07/04/2023 13:46

whatchaos · 07/04/2023 11:55

So you agree with them forcing their way into libraries and attacking librarians? It's not just a group of concerned parents - they're right wing religious extremists, and the same people involved in anti-migrant protests and before that with anti-vaccine protests. They're scum, trying to import far right tactics into Ireland.

Well at least they are doing something right then. What is the name of the group?

PeachPiePrincess · 07/04/2023 13:47

As an Irish primary school teacher - this is not being taught.
The government cannot move on curricula quickly to save their lives.
The current curricula in primary schools were written in 1999. It's now 2023. The English and maths are sloooooooooowly being revised.

I'll find a link to the primary school SPHE / RSE curriculum. It's easily located online. I guarantee you it doesn't not include the inflammatory material being discussed

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 00:57

Small victory for us Irish Parents. If you have the time please watch the video. These parents are speaking on behalf of the majority of us who believe pornography has no place in a classroom. Enough is enough.

The 'majority of us' - such bullshit. More Irish parents are horrified that these goons are targeting librarians and libraries and spreading misinformation than follow Gript.

Coyoacan · 07/04/2023 13:48

Why have Sado-masochists taken over sex education? When children are being taught that sex is about making women suffer, no wonder there are so many feminicides across the world

whatchaos · 07/04/2023 11:33

YABU. For anyone who doesn't know - Gript is edited by the far right John McGuirk who led a horrific campaign against the repeal of the eighth amendment (giving Irish women the right to abortion) including intimidating women at maternity hospitals. He also attacked the Simon Wiesthenthal centre in antisimetic tones. This group in Fingal pushed into a public library and proceeded to destroy books. Most of those interviewed are involved in whipping up anti-migrant sentiment. This is not about a group of concerned parents, it goes much much further than that.

It's OK to be right wing.
It's OK to campaign against a proposed change of law, re abortion. Its OK to disagree. Even if they're wrong, we live in a pluralist society, a Liberal democracy and people have the right to be wrong.

I don't know anything about the Simon Wiesenthal Centre thing, but McGurk et al are sharply critical of NGO's and lobby groups in general so I'm not surprised. As a general rule i won't immediately denounce any criticism of Jewish groups as anti semitic, same as criticism of trans Groups is not automatically transphobic and so on.

The group were escorted by garda into the library, not pushed in, stayed 15 mins and were peaceful.

There doesn't need to be a sinister conspiracy afoot when parents don't want sexually graphic material made available to their kids.
That's actually.... normal.

It is OK to disagree with the establishment, and make your feelings known. That's not far right, that's boring old Liberal democracy

You don't need to "invade libraries".
You can just walk in, they're open and inclusive to all

I don't want to ban and destroy them, I just want age appropriate materials for kids. Pretending that's a far right viewpoint is a deliberate tactic.

SertralineAndTherapy · 07/04/2023 13:57

I had a really quick dig to get at some facts. A particular book, aimed at older teens, and containing explicit details of sexual acts, found its way onto a reading list aimed at under-18s by Children's Books Ireland. It's now been removed.

It also seems that the "further reading" list accompanying the 12-15 school curriculum had also included it, and the whole list has been temporarily suspended. However, I have no idea how long that reading list was, or how many students actually read it.

Isn't a new curriculum being developed PeachPiePrincess? Or is that for secondary. I know the primary curriculum at present is pretty level headed, but in these times it's not unreasonable to be concerned that certain ideologues will seek to push their viewpoint.

The LGFA after all are allowing males in with zero consultation or even impact assessment.

You need to be careful celebrating Gript. They are jumping on the trans topic to appeal to an audience that would otherwise run a mile. Gript and it's backers would have Irish women living without reproductive freedom, not working outside the home, no children's rights only parental rights, no LGB rights at all, no divorce, and that's just the super conservative Catholic side, not even getting into the far right element and anti immigration stirring. This sounds like a potentially unsuitable book made it onto a suggested reading list for younger teens and it's now been remedied. But if you're getting your info from Gript you need to know what you're reading. They're seizing on this topic to promote a parental rights ideology straight from the Iona Institute. Parental rights sounds great until you realise what they mean behind it.

I'm Scottish and was appalled at the post but after reading what you've written, it makes sense. Thank you

Interesting. Thank you.

People often forget that teachers are people too and it's highly unlikely that your child's class teacher who has thus far presented as a normal person is going to say "Ok children put away the maths books. I have a hardcore porn video now for you all to watch followed by a demonstration on how to do it yourself at home. After that's over we'll have our little lunch and then practice our Irish Easter poem "

Well at least they are doing something right then. What is the name of the group?

Amongst the protestors are:

Irish Education Alliance - campaigners against child vaccination (see irisheducationalliance.com/call-for-cessation-of-covid-19-vaccination-for-children/)

Parents Rights Alliance - anonymous group of anonymous 'concerned parents' who are against sex education.

Lawyers for Justice Ireland – another shadowy group who are virulently anti-Ukranian and anti-democratic (eg recent FB post: While the world has been distracted with "trumped" up charges, the warmongering Biden Administration completely lose the plot to the tune of $2.6 billion to feed Zelensky's endless scripted whining.) Also anti-electronic transactions (cash only)

Hold The Line – another anti-vaccination group. Major ethno-nationalists.

Well, the protestors demanding to be let into libraries are trying to ban and destroy. Nobody is pretending it's a far right viewpoint, but the people organising the protests are far right groups. See the (mainstream press) report here about how the librarians have the support of the general public and have been intimidated by these goons:
