Amongst the protestors are:

Irish Education Alliance - campaigners against child vaccination (see irisheducationalliance.com/call-for-cessation-of-covid-19-vaccination-for-children/)

Parents Rights Alliance - anonymous group of anonymous 'concerned parents' who are against sex education.

Lawyers for Justice Ireland – another shadowy group who are virulently anti-Ukranian and anti-democratic (eg recent FB post: While the world has been distracted with "trumped" up charges, the warmongering Biden Administration completely lose the plot to the tune of $2.6 billion to feed Zelensky's endless scripted whining.) Also anti-electronic transactions (cash only)

Hold The Line – another anti-vaccination group. Major ethno-nationalists.

Really and truly, so what?
There's people out there who disagree with you.
They're allowed say their piece.

There's always been anti establishment contrarians.
Sometimes they're even correct.

This left / right division framed as good vs evil is so destructive to society. People have the right to be wrong otherwise you end up with some sort of tyranny.

1Week · 07/04/2023 14:18

@whatchaos OK, intimidation should definitely not happen.

Proper, normal discussion about what's appropriate for children should be happening loudly and publically.
If there's disinformation it should be a trifling matter to announce "Actually, on reflection we're moving these books to the older teens/ adult section. Library cards are graded Child 12 - 14, 15 - 17, and Adult. You can only withdraw certain books on the appropriate card. Apologies"

Our local library received a bundle of Trans themed books, aimed at teens, as part of Healthy Ireland. Many of them written by prominent transactivists. From a quick glance through none of them promoted a moderate approach, a wait and see approach, just you know who you are and if your parents aren't on board it's them that's wrong. It's someone high up in Libraries that selected them, all one sided, and placed them all over the country.

The Healthy Ireland selection is very good, btw, covers all sorts of topics. But the LGBTQ books were all pushing one line only.

@Eann it doesn't exist - the term is 'anal fisting' (see also 'vaginal fisting', or obviously don't if you'd rather not).

'Pumping' in a sex/porn context is something else altogether, and 'fist pumping' is exactly what it's always been and nothing to do with any of it Smile

If you watch the video the father explains all the graphic acts outlined in the book compete with the illustrations including fisting.

'so what' is that the OP says the majority of Irish parents agree with the protestors whereas actually they don't.

Ireland has one of the highest uptakes of vaccination in the world, Dublin had a huge demonstration to counter the small number of anti-migrant protests last month, the electorate voted by a huge majority to repeal the anti-abortion legislation and also voted by a big majority in favour of safe-sex marriage. I also very much doubt that the majority of Irish parents or the wider population agree with intimidating librarians.

They can 'say' what they want within the bounds of the law, but publicly intimidating people and stirring up hatred against migrants, women who have had their pregnancies terminated and vaccination programmes is not good.

RemoteControlDoobry · 07/04/2023 14:28

Anal fist pumping sounds romantic doesn't it?! I feel like porn has ruined normal relationships.

I don't know how you are so authoritive on what the majority of Irish parents want.

My guess on the majority of Irish parents - NO to intimidating librarians YES to age appropriate sex Ed NO to books telling kids how to perform sex acts in casual relationships. People are fond of libraries, expect a range of materials there, but also implicitly trust them as sources of factual, neutral, quality controlled info. It's a totally different dynamic to the way they feel about the Internet

Let's have a proper conversation about this, pro and anti, without name calling or sneering. The media is dereliction of duty if it doesn't facilitate this.

VictoriaBlossom · 07/04/2023 14:43

Wow I had no idea. And at 11 weeks pregnant fills me full of dread to think this is going on in any school.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 10:01

@nosyupnorth how the hell is learning how to anal fist pump beneficial to a 12 year old?

Which of the books that are being protested is this in?

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 14:53

whatchaos · 07/04/2023 13:46

Don't be so disingenuous - the OP is promoting Gript, a rightwing neoconservative anti-choice outlet who have sought to invade libraries and spread misinformation.

@whatchaos Can you please post our national broadcaster RTÉs link to the parents protest?
Also post RTÉs link about the book being removed from the national curriculum?

How can we ever hope to stop child sexual abuse when this stuff is in school?
If it had happened when I was a teacher ( long ago) I’d have refused to teach, handle or have anything to do with it. I’m sickened that my dgc might be exposed to this v

If you listen to the video link the poor dad says it contains blow jobs, fisting, anal sex positions aimed at primary school kids.
Seriously concerned about the "parents" on here going crazy about excellency journalism.

The lefties in the video that came out to protest really show what they are about. Incoherent, refused to be videoed or answer questions. Seriously odd behaviour. Like the lovely grandmother said it was like they were brainwashed.

This. And these books are posted in children's sections. I'm furious they are cutting the parents out completely & going straight at the kids from all angles. How can we trust our schools after this.
If the schools had a leg to stand on they would have put up a resistence but it was removed immediately after the pushback. Start of things to come enough is enough. Education not indoctrination.

The 'majority of us' - such bullshit. More Irish parents are horrified that these goons are targeting librarians and libraries and spreading misinformation than follow Gript.

They are not targeting. As you can see they are entering peacefully with a Gardaí escort & asking for the books in question. They are free to borrow like every other citizen with a card.
As a parent it's more in your line to demand to know why these books with adult content were put in the children's section in the first place.

'Poor Dad'?! That's Gavin Pepper, organiser of anti-migrant demonstrations. Not exactly known for telling the truth.

'Excellency journalism'? You mean Gript, the hardcore anti-choice, anti-vaccination, anti-migrant rag!

Go peddle your misinformation elsewhere OP!

Flounder2022 · 07/04/2023 15:07

@Bláthannabuí the only book I heard mentioned was This Book is Gay. Maybe I missed another? But there is no mention of fisting in that book.

Images from a book discussing fisting with claims it's from this book have been shown to be false.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 15:10

Well that concerned dad with two little girls said it on video. Look at all the comments under the video people are appalled at what the department of education were infiltrating into the system. The author stated herself it was NOT for children. There is no argument defending this book being on the curriculum.

SertralineAndTherapy · 07/04/2023 15:21

@Bláthannabuí Looking at the spec, no books are "on" the National Curriculum for SPHE. Teachers design their own courses to cover the points (or use pre-written ones.)

"This Book is Gay" was on a reading list of possible resources for students and teachers, and, certainly, ended up in the wrong age-group. But nobody was forcing anyone to read it!

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty used to the world of education, curricula, specifications, and syllabi.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 15:25

@SertralineAndTherapy but why was it on a recommended book list for children? Who researched it?
