@1Week maybe the next time your in the library flick to that section and see for yourself what it says. Or even handier, click in to one of the links posted here

SertralineAndTherapy · 07/04/2023 22:08

@Bláthannabuí You might not believe this, but I'm really on your side! But the atmosphere is very very tense both in Ireland and in the UK about these matters, and if people go around crying "wolf" then the real issues are ignored more easily. I'm trying to give you a way to back down a bit here and admit that you were misled. We all need to be critical about the things we see online, right?

In this particular thread (and the other very similar ones you have running) I think that a lot of the things you're saying are misinformation, and so I'm calling that out. If you can show me that I'm wrong, I'll take that on the chin.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 22:09

@SertralineAndTherapy if you watch the video pornography actually hardcore pornography is mentioned many times & anal fisting. I'm quoting the video in the title. That's what those angry parents were protesting about. If the book was so innocent why was it removed immediately from the national curriculum recommended book list & moved into the adults section in the library.
Many parents are going to be even more suspicious of the government & education system after this.

It has not been moved to the adult section of the library

Who knows. And ironically you won't find out in the book everyone is up in arms about!

You can't being reality into these things, these small minded lunatics don't care about that. Like the 'up in arms' bit btw, very apt 😉

SertralineAndTherapy · 07/04/2023 22:11

I did watch the video. What I find hard to believe is that you'll trust "nice dad" over people who are spending their Friday evenings talking to you! Can you maybe answer my 4 questions? Then we'll see where the disagreement lies.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 22:12

@Flounder2022 are you serious it's still in the young adults section for 12-17 year olds. It's supposed to be 17 plus.

@AxolotlOnions haha I wish I could say that was deliberate!!

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 22:14

@SertralineAndTherapy i agree tensions are getting very tense. I'm watching the UK closely & I'm really hoping they get there women only spaces back.

It really isn't small minded to have a care for your kids psychosexual development!
It's normal. It's good parenting. You might disagree on the details - ok, fine - but simply shrugging and saying, eh they see worse online is too low a bar.

Perhaps we're all agreeing on the need to protect teens going through the choppy waters of sexual development but at loggerheads about the best way to do it?

That's my point. You implied everyone was so outraged it was immediately whipped off the shelves and moved to the adult section!

@Flounder2022 can you clarify what section the library have moved the book to?

Absolutely as the dad in the video kept emphasing "I'm their dad, it's my job to protect my children".. How dare he put his child's safeguarding first & foremost. He came accross as a very invested & hands on dad.

You are coming at this from a good faith perspective. Yes, we all agree we need to protect our teens and yes, while we might differ on the details actually we are more in agreement than anything else. But what I wanted to really make sure was pointed out on this thread is that when we look at anything from Gript we cannot assume good faith because of their context. And then, well they are just peaceful parents. Can we definitely assume good faith from other information we know about them? There is definitely a gender critical gap in Ireland the far right is rushing in to fill it. And I think this thread illustrates that actually facts are not important in that context. Handing the issue of women's rights to the far right is like sending them from the frying pan into the fire. We have to resist the far right when we see it, whether the person is 'misled' or not.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 22:26

Ok flounder, thanks for clarifying, the young adult section is for 12-17 years old.

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 22:32

@WithFlamingLocksOfAuburnHair yes thanks for the kind words, I am very concerned especially as my dc are getting older & having to navigate all this. I'm not joking I was still playing Barbies with my 10 year old sister when I was 12... This is a minefield!
The thing that's frustrating is RTÉs refusal to report on any of this even the story about the reversal of the Gardaí not being forced to used use pronouns wasn't covered. I think that the censorship is what's infuriating me the most whereas the Gript have totally jumped on the bandwagon!

Well, this has been an interesting way to spend an evening, but I'll be logging off in 15-20 minutes! So, @Flounder2022 is active on another of your threads (please feel free to share the links to the actual curriculum I put here a while back).

Sleep well, everyone. "Let not the sun go down upon your wrath."

SertralineAndTherapy · 07/04/2023 22:36

Somehow that got mangled! I also meant to say, if @Bláthannabuí replies to me again and I don't get back to her, it's just because I'm tiiiiiiiired, and I'll be here again (probably too early) in the morning.
