@Bláthannabuí do you think by constantly calling him 'dad' it somehow turns him into a caring individual who wasn't only a short time ago heading up anti refugee protests where people were calling for them to be burned out of their accommodation?

Whatever about Peppers side, will we hear MY side on RTE?

goes a little something like this:

Dress how you please, fuck consenting adults, live your best life. But don't expect me to deny sex is real, don't take my sex based rights and don't evangelise kids

@1week totally & let's get our single sex spaces back for women only. If this government want to be progressive they need to abolish the GRA create a third sex which will have trans toilets, trans changing rooms, trans prisons & trans sports.
Women's spaces will be for women only. This is progressive. And all politicians & children will be educated enough to be able to answer the question "what is a woman"?
Gavin needs to get on the case for this. He has young daughters. He's getting lots of kudos online. Hope many more dad's rise up now he has shocked & horrified them into action.

@Flounder2022 is he not a dad? Are you trying to say he's making that up too? According to the video he's a dad of 5 with two little girls. Are you trying to say he's lying about that too? You seem to know all about him 🤔

Quick question for you, @Bláthannabuí . When you do get a copy of the book from the library, will you apologise here if it turns out to have no mention of things you claim it does based on the video, such as anal fisting and explicit graphics?

If you want to see the chatty style it's written in, you can 'View Inside' from Amazon (at least on the UK site).

All I know about him is the vile he spews. That told me enough. I'm not doubting he is a father. I was questioning why you constantly refer to him as a concerned dad. You obviously assume that is his only motivation. I, respectfully, doubt that very much.

whatchaos · 07/04/2023 21:15

@FOJN @Bláthannabuí
I also have a copy of the book. There is no mention of fisting whatsoever. I suggest you ask Mumsnet HQ to take down your misleading post as it's simply untrue that a book about fisting is on the Irish school curriculum.

The more prosaic truth is a relatively explicit book was suggested to teachers but has now been recategorised as unsuitable for a younger age group. Meanwhile, a group of anti-migrants and anti-vaxxers have lied and said it includes material on anal fist-pumping (whatever that is).

Of course if you prefer not to find out the truth yourself by actually reading the book then go for it, but do stop spreading lies.

1Week · 07/04/2023 21:20

And ordinary parents too, @whatchaos, ordinary parents also disagree that this book should be available to young teens. And it was.
If it isn't now - great! Everyone can go home.

SertralineAndTherapy · 07/04/2023 21:22

Yes, I'll happily "go home" when OP withdraws the claim that the book was being taught in schools.

Lockheart · 07/04/2023 21:24

Bláthannabuí · 07/04/2023 18:54

The dad in the video said there was fisting, blow jobs & a anal sex in the book with graphics. The dad in the video has read it, listen to his description & make up your mind.
@Flounder2022 as I said I couldn't get the book at my local library as both copies are out, I've reserved one so I'll just need to wait patiently until it's returned 😉

Oh well if some trouble-causing goon on YouTube said it then it MUST be true!

Why look for actual solid proof yoursf when you can just listen to what any old idiot with a go-pro and a dodgy agenda says?

Not only was this book apparently being taught in school but pornography was on the curriculum!

No, it wasn't - it was available the way any book is available - in libraries, adults have to sign library cards and presumably oversee what books their children take out. It was in the YA section. It was not taught in schools but was on a list of possible reading material for teachers.

And no, I won't go home until the OP withdraws her untrue post or is asked to do so.

Flounder2022 · 07/04/2023 21:29

@Lockheart that's truly shocking! Thank god all these concerned parent are here to stop this madness!!

SertralineAndTherapy · 07/04/2023 21:29

My axe to grind here is that there is a lot wrong with education (the system and possibly the content) in the UK, and I assume in Ireland. So people who spread misinformation are a distraction from that, and lose credibility on behalf of those with real complaints. Like the story of the boy who cried "wolf."

WithFlamingLocksOfAuburnHair · 07/04/2023 21:29

As an Ordinary Parent myself I'm actually less concerned about the book since I had a flick through it. My kids are young so we're not there yet, but if either of them came out as gay I can understand why they would need a book as a young teen that spells out gay and lesbian sex (and all the other elements of coming to terms with your sensuality, coming out, dating, etc.).

1Week · 07/04/2023 21:31

Maybe change the thread title:
A sexually explicit book was available to 12 year olds through national institutions that we trust with our kids, AIBU to think parents should stand against this?

I think that's bad enough without exaggerating or smearing all opponents as far right.

I've flicked through it too, now. It's infinitely better than getting your information about gay sex from the Internet or from real porn.

Pretty much every sexually explicit book ever written is available either online or in hardcopy in libraries to anyone who wants to look...

1Week · 07/04/2023 21:34

Still not suitable for kids though.

Are we... agreeing?? On the substance that is.

As an aside, I'm not sure Juno Dawson is the best person to be writing books about gay issues, they ruffled a lot of feathers by claiming being gay is a consolation prize compared to transitioning.

SertralineAndTherapy · 07/04/2023 21:37

I have said from the start that the book is aimed at older teens. Initially I thought that its inclusion on a Junior Cycle reading list must have been a mistake, but then I discovered that the lists are more aimed at teachers than students. Happy to agree with you on that, @1Week.

So my issue here is that the OP is wilfully misrepresenting the situation (to the extent of trolling us all?) @Bláthannabuí ..?

Another elephant in the room - Gript are run by a right wing Catholic group. Given the horrific history of child sexual abuse in Ireland by Catholic clerics, sexual ignorance, and punishment of those deemed sexually deviant (gay sex is still classified as deviant by the Catholic Church), an open and detailed secular RSE curriculum that prioritises safety, consent and pleasure should be absolutely welcomed.

You now have at least three MNers claiming that he's simply wrong, based on looking at the book itself. Are you going to find a copy..?
