I have sleep apnea, I was diagnosed many years ago but didn't get the equipment. Carrie Fisher died, sleep apnea was mentioned and it was a wake up call for me. I went back to my GP, I now have the equipment and my goodness what a difference, I now wake up feeling so much better, it's a life changer, Please persuade them to get a referral

I think you'll find that doctors take sleep apnoea much more seriously these days in the UK @BeringBlue

My DH has been on the waiting list for a CPAP for over a year, and it took over a year and a half to diagnose before that 😭

It's horrible for both of us but at least he's engaged in doing something about it, the NHS just doesn't have capacity at the moment. He isn't overweight and fairly young, just the structure of his head and neck. Many family members of his has it too for same reasons.

If my DH was keeping his head in the sand like yours I'd probably kill him”

Sympathies. Can you buy one? My husband bought a second, smaller machine for business was travel. Wasn’t too expensive. Always useful to have a spare, too as they need washing regularly.

Erh no my phone was dead but anyway...I haven't hijacked the thread people keeping @me I should no longer answer anyone or reply or I am hijacking a thread.
To answer the burning question re a sofa bee. Unfortunately with the configuration of our sitting room we wouldn't get one easily. Currently I sleep on the sofa most nights dh will not try ear plugs at all. This isn't a great long term solution as I have arthritis and its causing me a great deal of pain but there is currently no other solution until a child moves out. And if I can't afford the surgery with the crappy successs rate, as you can guess we can't afford to upgrade to a bigger house. So uncomfortable sofa it is for me for the duration for snoring which is not apnoea or weight related but is caused by chronic sinus problems and contrary to what I have been called I am not self centered, lazy fat or selfish. Just cursed with extremely narrow passages and terrible inflammation.

Sorry if you're offended by that I was just offering my perspective because I'm tired of all snorer being lumped into the same category and to be honest it's really hard. I feel like a burden because of snoring and its massively getting me down. I do sympathise with others but comments like "snorers are so lazy and self centered and fat"always fat apparently really get to me.

Literally no one lumped all snorers into the same category. You came into a thread talking about one kind of medical condition and got offended by comments that either weren't about you, or nobody has actually made

Because 'all snorers are lazy, self centred and always fat' is literally not a thing that's been said to you or on this thread

People have called partners lazy when they have sleep apnea and refuse to do anything about it. People have talked about weight as a cause of sleep apnea. And people have called snorers who refuse to get it investigated self centred

If you choose to think that means we think you are lazy fat and self centred that's up to you, but you are making associations that arent there about a thread thats not even about your medical condition

@AliceMcK I was going to ask if anyone had tried the snoring mouth guard. I saw Boots have a whole range: nasal spray, throat spray, nasal strips snd the mouth guard . DH has so far only bern willing for me to get him the nasal spray: it does help a bit but seems to take a while to start working and sometimes wears off later so there’s some snoring at the beginning of the night and towards the end. But a definite improvement I would say. Is the mouth guard difficult to get used to?

My DH has been fine with it. Sometimes he will leave it out if it’s rubbing but that’s very rare. You share it to your mouth when you first get it so it fits properly. He’s on his second one, I just bought them off Amazon.

@AliceMcK

You can get a sleep study done at home for a few hundred quid and buy your own cpap!? 🤷🏼‍♀️

The home studies don’t work for me, I’ve done 3. I had to do an overnight inpatient study which is far more in-depth, to find out what was happening with me.

And every where I looked for a Cpap in the UK I was told I needed a prescription to get one. Plus I like the one that’s ultimately changed my life so don’t want to buy a cheaper one only to find it’s not as good.

RampantIvy · 07/04/2023 15:53

DH did a home sleep study and it worked extremely well. It showed that he had 50 non breathing episodes an hour!

Something to bear in mind - if you stay in a hotel with a CPAP machine take an extension lead with you. Many hotels don't have power outlets by the bed. We have been caught out a few times.
