If you work in education has any child gone on to be famous or notorious?

Having a chat with a colleague today and she said that a child we taught she thought would be a famous footballer when older.

I just wondered if anyone, who works in education, has taught a child who went on to become famous or notorious?

My brother in law taught George Barnet (Ezra).

Then they also taught me friend, who was in his maths class 😂

Taught a lovely lad, mum a well known actress, who has gone on to be a comedy writer and appeared several times at the Edinburgh Festival.
Another boy, again has a famous mother, appears on TV and writes a newspaper column.

I didn’t teach but served Marcus rashford for his school uniform when he was around 14/15 and was playing for united. I remember him purely because he was such a lovely lad. So mild mannered and polite. Probably the nicest kid I’ve served in the 20 years doing the job.

@Ohyeahbabe most likely. It was Swansea but I don't know the name of the school.

It was Dumbarton House school. Rob Bryson also went there. It closed years ago and flats were built on the site.

TroysMammy · 28/03/2023 20:06

Rob Brydon.

Yes, amongst all the thousands of students we teach over a lifetime there are sure to be some of both! I taught some who went on to be famous, book writers, leaders.

Unfortunately the notorious, easily led and ones with no escape from their homelives and issues are ones we could see at an early age and dearly hoped they wouldn't continue down the same path. So sad, some of them have passed or in jail, we did all we could to help them. X

I taught the mother of Arthur Labinjo-Hughes. She’s currently serving 12 years for killing her abusive boyfriend (hence why Arthur was with his father and stepmother).

No-one actually famous but have had (during 20 years of teaching)
1 x girl on a BBC documentary about Sugar Daddies (v quiet, great figure, few friends)
1 x pedophile (and all the staff thought he was a lovely young man)
1 x rapist (we thought he’d get into trouble)
1 x Drag Queen (wasn’t surprised)

ILoveEYFS · 28/03/2023 20:11

I went to school with John Hasler and I taught Jessie J.

Xarrie · 28/03/2023 20:12

I was a 1-1 TA with someone who murdered someone.

I was very sad when I heard but not surprised. He had a terrible home life. His mum called him the little cunt when she was called into school for meetings. Social services deemed her 'good enough'

Not excusing what he did in any way but my god did he have a horrendous backstory.

Icecreamlover63 · 28/03/2023 20:18

I was a teaching assistant to an actor who appeared in Eastenders for about a year. He left about 18 months ago.

on the flip side another child who was in that class has just been put inside for murder.

I simply couldn’t believe it when I read about it in the paper. Just so sad.

blackpearwhitelilies · 28/03/2023 20:37

I taught Cillian Murphy.

loafintheoven · 28/03/2023 20:38

My mum taught Grant Shapps. She wasn't impressed.

Ooooooh he's my absolute fave.

Not a teacher, but my granddad was the dentist of the little girl in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Was that when she lived in Dundee or when they’d moved away.

Her family owned Ripley the Opticians in Dundee.

blackpearwhitelilies · 28/03/2023 20:57

Xarrie I really like him now, but he was quite a stroppy student! I taught him in First Year.

I taught Pritt Patel, an A level revision course, it never appears on her CV and her time spent at the college never appears....she was so polite and nice and a perfect student, i had tabloids contacting me for dirt on her but i refused to comment and only said how nice she was.

I have heard she’s not the brightest… can you confirm?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/03/2023 21:06

The fact that she was on an A level revision course suggests she didn't sail through her exams.

My mum taught a boy who went on to illustrate some of the Harry Potter books. It may have been the front covers. My mum was a good and conscientious teacher but not noted for her artistic ability so I don't think she can claim any credit for his success! She was very proud of the connection, though.

shem26 · 28/03/2023 21:10

I taught Will Tidball at Primary, now in the Great Britain Cycling Team. Lovely lad and very sporty from a young age. Remember him in my running club, felt he could have run laps non stop until we all arrived for school the next morning 🤣

twoshedsjackson · 28/03/2023 21:19

I have seen several different ex-pupils pop up on University Challenge, King's College Cambridge Carol Service, Mastermind and as a union spokesman. Through volunteering at a local music festival, I got to know one charming youngster who made it to the finals of Musician of the Year.
The only killer I know of was tragic; a very troubled home life, and although he was a real handful, you couldn't help feeling sorry for him. The self-loathing must have been too much for him, as he hanged himself in his early twenties.

NurseryNurse10 · 28/03/2023 21:24

I've worked within the education and childcare sector for years and have none of them have gone on to do anything scandalous or media worthy....yet!

Lacey247 · 28/03/2023 21:40

I worked with a guy who had worked with Maxine Carr in the past. He worked with her after her release from prison when she had been given a new identity. He said the moment she walked in the room everyone recognised her

Well.............. she was one of a few students who asked for the exam board marking criteria so that her assignments and course work met each of them. She also did A level English Lit revision one year course. She passed both exams with grade B or C. She is fairly bright but stuck strictly to guidelines and wasn't very adventurous with her Media coursework and opted for a safe option. She was very pleasant and polite.
