If you work in education has any child gone on to be famous or notorious?

Having a chat with a colleague today and she said that a child we taught she thought would be a famous footballer when older.

I just wondered if anyone, who works in education, has taught a child who went on to become famous or notorious?

How is it that you remember her after all this time? I wouldn't remember one student of hundreds that I probably crossed paths with during two weeks of work experience.

Was there anything remarkable about her at the time?

I don't remember her at all. I just know that she was there at the same time I was. It's my tiny, tenuous claim to fame.

My MIL taught Robert Rinder.

Olympians aren’t exactly rare, which is probably why so many of us have taught one at some point. One of my ex-students is a medalist but not a household name. They won bronze in a team event. Another competed at the olympics but didn’t get a medal… also not really a household name, though possibly more well known than the medalist. There were 370-odd Team GB athletes at the last Olympics alone. That’s a lot and they all went to school somewhere.

A famous singer (knew she would go to be a star). A murderer.

glammymommy · 28/03/2023 17:48

Oh and two of the rowers in the boat race recently

Clarityiskey · 28/03/2023 18:03

A famous footballer and sadly a boy who went on to murder his Grandmother and Aunty.
But it's the not famous ones that stick with most. The ones where I know I made a difference and who brought me joy every day.

I taught one of the actors in Grandpa in my pocket!

One of my daughters teachers was a child actor in Grandpa in my pocket!

Yes, I taught a young very talented singer who is selling top songs right now. Don’t want to name drop, too outing.
So very proud of her.

HelenaHurricane · 28/03/2023 18:22

A student at a school I used to work in was on Bake Off a few years ago. That's the only one I can think of!

Someone I taught and was in my form as a Year 7 is in Hollyoaks now.

nonamesleftatall · 28/03/2023 18:25

Oh, did she teach at Gresham’s?

iklboo · 28/03/2023 18:25

My drama teacher's wife taught Maxine Peake.

I taught a very nice adult student who had a real talent for words and was amazed years later to hear him on BBC 4 introducing a poetry slam. I still have one of his short stories which I told him at the time was publishable.

Gymrabbit · 28/03/2023 18:29

I taught a scumbag who murdered a child. He was an entitled little sod and very manipulative - I wasn’t particularly surprised when I saw the news.

NellietheNumpty · 28/03/2023 18:40

Taught a child who murdered a family member whilst in their teens.

trelawney59 · 28/03/2023 18:42

Taught a student who played women’s rugby internationally. A supremely talented yet modest young woman whom I’m so proud to have known. Very proud of all that she has accomplished - who is such an inspiration and incredible role model and ambassador for her sport as well as the LGBTQ+ community.
A privilege to have taught you.

nannykatherine · 28/03/2023 18:43

This can’t be true ..
1… how come everyone is a teacher all of a sudden
2..they can’t ALL be murderers ???

can they ????

Mere1 · 28/03/2023 18:46

Richard Allen-Deaf Leopard drummer.

Not notorious or famous but I once had a student who gave me creepy vibes. I just knew that he had an issue with women and made sure I was never left in the classroom with him if no one else was there. I've never had that reaction to any other student. He is currently in prison for a violent rape (I know all rape is violence but the judge remarked on the particularly brutal nature of the case) that he carried out just before the end of his course with us.

An Ennerdale actor, and someone who killed somebody with a single punch. The latter was a gorgeous, but extremely neglected and traumatised little boy. I loved him and hope he gets the support to turn his life around, on his release.

mum2one85 · 28/03/2023 18:52

I went to school with a race car driver. He killed someone via dangerous driving I believe. Always thought he was a prat tbh.

I adored Justin Currie until I met him. Can’t put my finger on it, but he just seemed a bit melodramatic and martyr-ish. What was he like at school, d’you know?

BlueBananaLlama · 28/03/2023 18:59

@nannykatherine from a statistical perspective, it’s not surprising at all. A child who went to a local school in my town murdered another child. In standard town primary school
that child will have (probably) had around 7 teachers. Plus part-timers and school management and support staff. At secondary school they could have had (potentially) around 15 teachers a year for a minimum of five years. Plus support staff. So for every murderer, there could be around 85 people who taught them.
