If you work in education has any child gone on to be famous or notorious?

Having a chat with a colleague today and she said that a child we taught she thought would be a famous footballer when older.

I just wondered if anyone, who works in education, has taught a child who went on to become famous or notorious?

OP posts:

Hmmmm I wonder who they are 🤔 is one of them back in prison by any chance?

No, it was talking about their trial that prompted my teacher to talk about her experience.

Similar age, also killed children.

Women couldn’t teach boys in Saudi Arabia until recently…

She taught him and his family privately at their home, He was about twenty at the time. She actually didn't tell anyone about it until a national newspaper posted a story on it many years later.

My form tutor at school had previously taught at a young offenders centre. She had taught a very high profile child murderer.

The child had since reached adulthood and been released. My teacher knew what they were doing for work and that they had a new name but didn't know the name or the area. She said it frightened her to think of them out there and nobody knowing who they were.

Well seeing, as there's on three criminal individuals in the country who have been given a new identity, I think we can work it out.

itsabigtree · 29/03/2023 11:19

Only

No way is it only three. New identities are not advertised, for obvious reasons. It's almost certainly a figure exponentially higher than that, even for murderers who were children at the time of their offences. Not all cases get the same level of press coverage.

Although tbf JesusMary said it was a ‘very high profile’ child murderer, so to argue that the pool of people it might be is bigger than we might think because of all the ones we don’t know about, is a bit circular.

Mary Bell, Venables and Thompson are the main ones surely.

Always wondered about Mary Bell, how her life turned out. I know she had a daughter

Angelil · 29/03/2023 14:31

Maxine Carr was also given a new identity so that’s 4 already…

itsabigtree · 29/03/2023 14:38

Yes I thought it was only venables, Thompson and Maxine Carr, but i just googled and it turns out there are 6. I stand corrected.

parklimes · 29/03/2023 14:43

We fostered a boy who became a high profile murderer. He was a lovely lad, no trouble whatsoever, very kind.

NewCarOldCar · 29/03/2023 14:47

I was just talking about people who were children when they killed and got a new identity

That must have been a terrible shock.

parklimes · 29/03/2023 17:22

It was. There were some who lived here who we would think would be in trouble as adults but not this one.

justasking111 · 29/03/2023 17:35

I remember my mother and others being really shaken by the Mary Bell case.

Daffodilwoman · 29/03/2023 17:55

I know someone who had worked at a behavioural unit. One of her ex pupils raped and murdered a teenager. She wasn’t surprised.
I was taught by a famous playwriter when I went to secondary school. They left teaching to forge a career as a writer. They were a fabulous teacher.
Another teacher at the same school was the son of a famous actor.
My uncle was best friends with the grandad of a very famous member of a boy band. The grandad lived around the corner from where mum and her siblings lived. I realise he wasn’t at school with the famous person.
I went to school with a girl who bullied me. Her brother later raped a young woman. After that he went on to murder his own grandma. He walked with a limp after getting into a turf war over dealing drugs. He ended up getting himself and all his family evicted by the authorities.

She was living in Sussex until her new identity was disclosed to the press sometime in the late 90s, and she and her daughter had to be relocated and given another new identity. Iirc, her daughter didn't know her mother's history until that happened.

marcopront · 29/03/2023 20:10

A couple of murderers and a few Bollywood celebrities

Poor child finding that out and then having to have a new identity. I wonder how old she was.

CurzonDax · 29/03/2023 21:10

Sort of the opposite of what OP asked, but I was taught by one of Andy Serkis' siblings. This was at the height of his LOTR fame - the sibling was absolutely lovely and a wonderful teacher.

Newuser82 · 29/03/2023 21:23

@ancientgran I think she was a teenager. Poor, poor girl!

If you can fine, just didn't want to name names publicly. Same as plenty of others here.

There are far more than three criminals who have been given new identities upon release though.

Is it a playwright with initials SS?

My DS went to school with a now famous footballer. He was a bully, and is now incredibly rich. Probably still an arsehole no matter how many “inspiring talks” he gives at schools

Lewis Hamilton?

Oops sorry I've just realised you said footballer. I wasn't concentrating lol

My council colleague is a retired teacher who taught Paddy Considine, and encouraged him in the school plays. He's immensely proud of him, especially after House of the Dragon
