Led by donkeys - enough is enough

Bloody hell, I’ve just watched the new “led by donkeys” video. People like Matt Hancock wanting to work for a fake consultancy firm for obscene amounts of cash.

I cannot tell You how angry MPs make me right now.

I have a relative that is an NHS dr on £14 an hour. She pays for her own travel and parking. All her study… she pays for. She is so busy she sometimes doesn’t eat.

then these idiots earn loads, and then claim back loads of expenses. Disgusting in my opinion. They then get second jobs that pay them £10k a day. Without even checking if company is real first.

In my opinion an mp should only take a second job if it’s in the nhs, army etc or a volunteer job for a registered charity. That’s it. No other reason.

I can’t even process this. I’ve had enough. What on earth can we do to change this? And yes I’ll not be voting Tory at the next election. They are a bunch of posh rich boys that want to just look after themselves. Politics should be more diverse. what on earth can we do?

So who do you vote for, if your local MP is decent, trustworthy and reliable. Has done more for your local area in her time of holding the post than the previous MP of a rival party did in his 15 years (I think it was 15). ... But you don't like the party she's in?

How do you deal with national and local conflict when voting? I care that my area has been/is going through a massive regeneration thanks to her and her her efforts, I care that she works for us and does her damnedest to reliable and responsible...

I think you deal with it by not being so insular.

Vote for the party whose morals and world view you respect, and lobby your local mp to fix the tarmac outside of your house. If it doesn't happen at least you can comfort yourself that children aren't being left in abject food poverty whilst you stare lovingly at your well manicured verges ...

I do understand where you are coming from to be fair, and wish for you to have the best of both worlds. That is what our country needs 🤞

I don’t believe voting labour next time will help us. These idiots will still be able to have second jobs. They still earn £80k (and rising). They still make £1000s in expenses. They can still get away with doing the bare minimum of work. They still have tax loop holes that benefit them. They are all still an unethical bunch of people. All of them.

But Kier Starmer’s #1 change he has promised is to ban all second jobs for MPs with very strict exceptions (along the lines you have proposed).

'Ban all second jobs for MPs' - Starmer

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer calls for five key changes to improve MPs' parliamentary standards.

@GoodChat what? My work pays for private health care. I work in the life science sector. It’s fairly standard in that sector. It has no impact on my voting intention.

Your relative I guess is studying to be a doctor, and once training has finished, will be on substantially more than £14 per hour. Unfortunately, many people training for vocational jobs get nothing and have to get jobs on the side until training is finished. So your relative is pretty lucky….

So it's ok, because someone, somewhere, has it shitter?

L3ThirtySeven · 26/03/2023 09:37

YouSoundLovely · 26/03/2023 09:01

80k + is perfectly decent money. Public money. For public servants. If the pay is putting people off, I'd suggest they're not the sort of people we want in the job.

Especially since it is £80k plus a free multi-million £ second home in London all expenses paid. Most jobs that come with accommodation are things like farm hand on NMW and living in barracks/hostels.

User386421986 · 26/03/2023 09:40

Pay for MPs is probably set about right at £80k but pay for PM is far too low, people get more reading the news.

Eskarina1 · 26/03/2023 09:41

Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak both released their tax details and it makes for very interesting reading (spoiler, Starmer earned a lot less and paid a lot more). Starmer also said he'd change pension rules in a way that would personally negatively impact him.

There are corrupt people on both sides because the system is vulnerable but I think it's endemic in the Tory party.

Thisisvenus · 26/03/2023 09:03

@allibaby for the hours my relative works, the stress of it, the unsafe working conditions, etc. my nhs doctor relative does not earn enough!

she pays for her own parking at hospital. Matt Hancock can claim his back.

sure she can earn more…. By doing more, picking up extra shifts. The basic pay is terrible.

do you think politicians deserve £80k basic?

I'm NHS myself and can categorically say there is no NHS doctor getting paid only £14 an hour.

I do however agree they can work long hours (I say can because not all Dr's do) and agree that they do sometimes work in unsafe conditions as we all do.

I also agree that we shouldn't have to pay for our own parking.

Of course I don't think politicians deserve the pay they get especially the shower of shite who are in power now but I would just rather stick to the facts and the facts are an NHS doctor does not receive only £14 an hour.

Yes. We have to bear in mind that a basic £80K salary is not including expenses.

For instance, the unpleasant Jonathon Gullis claimed £226K. Yes you read that right. Some Tory MPs even more. I appreciate some of this goes on staffing costs but still.... Gullis used to be a teacher. Since becoming an MP he has amassed a £5million fortune.

One polish speaking Tory MP claimed £22K for polish lessons, despite saying he is fluent in Polish!

HRTQueen · 26/03/2023 09:54

MP’s should not have second jobs or be able to sit on boards

even their radio/tv work should be limited to a number of hours as some never seem to be off the radio or tv or writing and promoting their books

its a honour to be an MP that’s the job not a spring board to other roles

Maiyakat · 26/03/2023 09:55

What terrifies me about this is we have people running the country who don't bother getting their staff to run a quick check to see if the company they're going for an interview with actually exists....

allibaby · 26/03/2023 09:56

Thisisvenus · 26/03/2023 09:35

@Irritateandunreasonable it might be less. My relative has just had to pay for all her specialty exams, on top of parking, and student loan repayments. She never ever leaves on time ever. sometimes during busy times it’s a couple of hours extra a shift.

So your relative is a student not actually an NHS Dr yet?

Sorry you never mentioned that in your first post hence why I was a bit incredulous that an NHS Dr was claiming to be on only £14 an hour.

Since the Saudi's rudely declined to pay for his daughters school fees he has to make ends meet somehow.

That's quite rude actually.

I don't agree/respect any of the political parties currently.

As someone that over the years, has voted for each party at some point, to now find myself politically homeless has been quite horrible. So it's not insular to look to the MPs that have done the most for my area. And that isn't "tarmaccing the road"

It's improving the schools, getting a university built, getting a new A and E department built, regeneration of the town centre, kerbing anti social behaviour, supporting families with additional needs etc.

I'd vote for any party that did all that, and that I thought had an actual plan for how to sort the country's finances out that aren't just super taxing anyone who earns more than 40k a year, vilifying everyone other than the abject poor etc.

Most students don't make student loan repayments while they are a student, so it would seem likely they are not a student.

Thisisvenus · 26/03/2023 09:59

@allibaby my relative is a junior doctor that has just spent a lot of cash on some exams she needed to do. She has £90k of student loan. She drives miles to work and pays For her own parking at hospital. She sometimes doesn’t have time to eat on shift.

Sounds fairly typical of the life of junior doctors, certainly not out of the ordinary compared to those junior doctors I know.

@allibaby Probably because the relative isn't a student.

Thisisvenus · 26/03/2023 10:02

@allibaby i don’t know what her basic salary is but she earns less than me. Then if we add on top all the unpaid hours. And then if we minus the cash that she just paid for her exam. Well…. The numbers don’t look good.

Pay for MPs is probably set about right at £80k but pay for PM is far too low, people get more reading the news.

People don't want to be PM because of the salary - they want the power to change systems (whether that's to benefit the wider public or not can be questionable).

I doubt paying more will get a higher calibre of PM.

Duvetdweller · 26/03/2023 10:07

I’m a Labour voter but actually feel
sorry for traditional Tory voters as I don’t think the current shower are in any way in line with the values of the traditionally Conservative Party. They really are nothing but a bunch of corrupt, money grabbing criminals who think they are far more intelligent and important than the little people they represent.
