Led by donkeys - enough is enough

Bloody hell, I’ve just watched the new “led by donkeys” video. People like Matt Hancock wanting to work for a fake consultancy firm for obscene amounts of cash.

I cannot tell You how angry MPs make me right now.

I have a relative that is an NHS dr on £14 an hour. She pays for her own travel and parking. All her study… she pays for. She is so busy she sometimes doesn’t eat.

then these idiots earn loads, and then claim back loads of expenses. Disgusting in my opinion. They then get second jobs that pay them £10k a day. Without even checking if company is real first.

In my opinion an mp should only take a second job if it’s in the nhs, army etc or a volunteer job for a registered charity. That’s it. No other reason.

I can’t even process this. I’ve had enough. What on earth can we do to change this? And yes I’ll not be voting Tory at the next election. They are a bunch of posh rich boys that want to just look after themselves. Politics should be more diverse. what on earth can we do?

MPs probably need to be paid more to attract decent people and for them not to have to take second jobs. Unpopular opinion I know!

80k + is perfectly decent money. Public money. For public servants. If the pay is putting people off, I'd suggest they're not the sort of people we want in the job.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 26/03/2023 09:02

Boris Johnson has always been a liar, he never really pretended to be anything else. People voted for him knowing that and he still has apologists today. Nothing accidental about it.

LakeTiticaca · 26/03/2023 08:48

You are very naive if you think only tory MPs have second jobs, claim huge expenses, have second homes etc. They all do, yes even labour!!
Perhaps it is time for a new broom to sweep clean but who do you think is capable of running the country? Have a look back at the last Labour government.

The cash for honours, cronyism, illegal war, flogging off our gold reserves, raided our pension pots.
It wasn't quite the utopia people seem to think it was 😉

The video is quite clear that Led by Donkeys asked a range of MPs with relevant 2nd jobs from various parties, strangely only the Tories were stupid enough to reply to a fake company.

Thisisvenus · 26/03/2023 09:03

@allibaby for the hours my relative works, the stress of it, the unsafe working conditions, etc. my nhs doctor relative does not earn enough!

she pays for her own parking at hospital. Matt Hancock can claim his back.

sure she can earn more…. By doing more, picking up extra shifts. The basic pay is terrible.

do you think politicians deserve £80k basic?

This 'they're all the same' attitude is part of what perpetuates the problem.
This current lot, the ERG/UKIP mob that have taken over the Conservative party are in a league of their own when it comes to corruption.
I'm not sure that Keir Starmer would have given £100,000-odd of public money to the American woman he was shagging while his wife was having cancer treatment. Or put the son of a KGB agent into the HOL. Matt Hancock pretending to cry on TV about the pandemic, while giving PPE contracts to his mates.

TheFTrain · 26/03/2023 09:05

The way Hancock claps his hand over his mouth after he talks about money. I'd love to know what a body language expert makes of that but I'm pretty sure we can come to our own conclusions.

They have basically been in power way too long. They're living in their own little bubble and are completely out of touch about what's happening in the real world.

Thisisvenus · 26/03/2023 09:07

I’m more than happy to let the other lot have a go next time but I give it a month tops before one of them messes up and does something corrupt/dodgy.

For the level of responsibility they hold, if they worked for a private company they'd earn a hell of a lot more than £80,000. Unfortunately their incompetency was voted in by the general public, rather than an interview panel that they'd have in the private sector.

So you're not going to actually do anything then? Your first question was what can we do - all you're going to do is vote for somebody you don't trust. Just somebody different.

Thisisvenus · 26/03/2023 09:09

Besides I don’t think it is helpful to blame those that voted Tory last time. It does not help the future at all. Not does it do anything but anger people that could possibly vote for something else.

its like telling a kid that fell over and broke their arm that it’s their own fault.

not sure anyone could have predicted Covid, parties, I’m a celeb, snogging, Boris lying to this extent, rishi getting in, etc. it’s a soap opera!

Yes easily.
Boris is a narcissist - whatever came his way he would screw up!

Speak to your MP. Start a petition. Become a councillor. Become and MP.

loislovesstewie · 26/03/2023 09:10

The whole system needs a gigantic shake up. A thread earlier this week was about asking permission of an employer to do a second job, but we have people who already earn a fair whack PLUS expenses who are allowed to do second jobs/consultancies for oodles of money. We trust people who actually often have little expertise /experience to make laws that impact on our lives, they are also often completely divorced from the reality of life for huge swathes of the population. It doesn't matter what party we talk about, most seem to be Oxbridge educated, have rarely done and ordinary job and live in a bubble. Most seem to put their snouts in the trough and then vote for legislation that causes detriment to the most vulnerable. The shame is that they don't see it that way and don't care.

Vote labour!
Vote for a party that's credible - not perfect but a whole lot better than the current shit show

Cakeandcardio · 26/03/2023 09:12

It's clear those who voted Tory last time are to blame though? The rest us of already knew what they were like. We aren't surprised by this behaviour at all.

Sortyourlifeout · 26/03/2023 09:12

Just get the bloody Tories out for a start.

DashboardConfessional · 26/03/2023 09:13

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 26/03/2023 08:35

It's more like telling a kid not to jump from the top of a tree because they'll hurt themselves and then watching as the kid not only jumps from top of the tree but grabs every other child and pulls them out as they plumet towards earth.

Politicians are simply a reflection of the people who vote for them and of wider society in general.

A bloody men.

I blame every single person who voted for them. Who didn't know what their ethos is? Bloody Boris was their leader!

NoCatsToday · 26/03/2023 09:13

With a few notable exceptions MP's are self seeking, ambitious and blind to the wider problems in society. It is these qualities that mean they succeed as politicians in what is a very dog eat dog world.

Making financial comparisons never works. If people were paid based on the value and importance of their work rather than its status in society then those working in care homes would be on much higher salaries.

Doesn't matter who you voted for last time. However it remains important that you still vote even if the options are not great. In many societies in the world this basic human right is denied people and to dismiss it is to lose your chance to comment on the outcomes.

Showdogworkingdog · 26/03/2023 09:13

The way that MPs have always earned money from outside work has always pissed me off. Not only does it mean they are milking their connections and influence for commercial gain but it also means they are not doing the job they’ve been elected to do. Yet people keep voting them in - yesterday Britain elects published a prediction poll showing Liz fucking Truss will retain her seat at the next election! Confused

MeinKraft · 26/03/2023 09:14

That's the Tories for you. I don't blame people who voted for their either, they used to be viewed as the moral party you could depend on to be sensible and look after the countries finances. Of course this was back in the day before we had the technology to catch them out in all their sleazy dealings, and had to rely on the papers to investigate. Every single day seems to being a new Tory scandal that would have brought the government down years ago, these days it's just meh, that's the way it is.

We need voters to look, really look, at who they are voting for now and forget what the conservatives stood for in the past. Because they certainly don't stand for family values or financial prudence anymore.

Quveas · 26/03/2023 09:15

Personally, I like donkeys. They are hardworking and amiable creatures. Unlike Tories. I think the comparison is unfair.

ThreeFeetTall · 26/03/2023 09:15

There was a politician that didn't take bribes, stuck to his convictions over the decades, and (if rumour is believed) got divorced because he wanted to stick to his principles.
He had a lot of other flaws but...would you rather politicians were like Jeremy Corbyn than Boris Johnson?

Roussette · 26/03/2023 09:16

@Thisisvenus

So you wouldn't even give Labour a chance after 13 years of a tory government?

FWIW I don't think you should be questioned on how you voted last time. I have huge respect for those who voted for Brexit but have come out and said they made an awful mistake.

Julia Hartley Brewer tweeted this morning...

"This is all very embarrassing for the MPs in this video (and especially when some many people are struggling to pay basic bills) but they're not doing anything illegal or against the rules. If it was a fake Chinese or Russian company, then this would be a scandal. But it's not."

Nothing to see hear folks, move along! What a pathetic justification from her. Not surprised.

loislovesstewie · 26/03/2023 09:17

Actually I like donkeys too. I'd rather be led by an actual donkey than the tow rags we have in government.

jgw1 · 26/03/2023 09:17

knackeredmumoftwo · 26/03/2023 09:12

Vote labour!

Worth noting that Labour have already announced some policies that would reform parliament - specifically the HoLs, which whilst not a solution to this particular problem, is part of the solution to the corruption that has been a feature of Tory governments for the past 13 years.
