I was always told as a child I'd be tall as an adult - by everyone around me - but my actual adult height is 5ft1/155cm. I'm female.

Average height for a woman in the UK is 5’3 so it’s not that short objectively

@Gensola it's probably closer to 5'4" but I guess so maybe

@Smallsalt you're far from being correct it's not what you feel, it's what's factual whether you agree or not your average height, 5'4" female is average and that's that

Thanks so much for pointing out the difference between what I feel and what is factual. I wouldnt have fathoned that without your incisive input. Thank god you were there.

GeraniumJenny · 17/09/2024 14:09

I’m 4ft 10.5 inches. I would love to be over 5ft. I’m also shrinking. There will be nowt left of me soon.

@Smallsalt don't act clever it's probably not your strong suit irl, the fact is 5'4" is average whether you think your short or not get over it

@Smallsalt imagine if you was that actually clever you know what an factual statement was keep thinking your feelings are above facts

Rory17384949 · 17/09/2024 14:35

It's short but not very short - but definitely not average height.

I'd say very short for a woman is under 5ft

I am 5ft1 it is short but not very short. To be honest I see so many women my height and maybe a little taller so I def don't feel like it's unusual or anything. I'm more surprised when someone is actually smaller than me 😂

I've always been small. My kids are quite small too just like me. They don't seem to be taking their height after my husband, he's 6ft4. I always assumed they would be my height by about 12 😂 but they are small and petite like their mum.

Cattenberg · 17/09/2024 17:14

I think the reason we tend to overestimate average heights for men and women is because we’re bombarded by images of tall models, actors, TV presenters etc.

Also Mumsnet is like Lake Wobegon. Someone will say, “well, I’m 6ft tall and earn £100k and so do my friends, so I’d say we’re pretty average”.

@theteddybear that's crazy haha, but of course surely the most common height for women is usually 5'1" to 5'4" like my girlfriend is 5'2" and I'm 6'8" god if I plan on kids I hope they're tall

Verv · 17/09/2024 17:39

short imo, but not very, which would be under 5' for me.

Tinysarah1985 · 17/09/2024 17:46

I'm 5ft 1. I struggle every day, at work I can't reach meds on the top shelf, I can't reach the top kennel latches, can't reach the lock at thw top of the shutters. Went to the gym today and had to ask one of the instructors to move down some of the equipment so I could reach it 🤣

notprincehamlet · 17/09/2024 17:51

I'm currently 1.57m but hoping for a late onset growth spurt 🙏

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 17/09/2024 18:04

Not sure why someone revived a zombie thread to mansplain. But anyway.

I'm 5ft1. I'm in the middle for my female relatives. (Mums side of the family are averge/tall. Dad's are tiny)

Most of the women I know are 5ft6 and above, which is interesting if average is 5ft4!

And I always say that God lets things grow until they are perfect. Some of us just reach that sooner Grin

SallyWD · 17/09/2024 18:06

I'd say short. I see under 5ft as very short. I think 5ft is average. Anything over 5ft6 is tall.

Kaete · 17/09/2024 18:14

I think 5ft 1 is very short but I'm 5ft 10 so that probably skews my perspective.
I'd say tall is 5ft 9 and over, although I feel quite short compared to a lot of schoolkids today. I work in further education and feel quite average height-wise compared to the students!

I'm 5ft 8 and 49 years old. Definitely always considered myself tall and many people have told me I'm tall. Most of my friends are between 5ft 3 and 5ft 6 so I've always been taller. I've had only two female friends taller than me.
However, the new generation are very tall. I often see teenage girls who tower above me. It's quite nice to feel short for a change

They’re not even that tall. When you look up actors / actresses heights they largely quite average! They look two because they tend to be very lean / slim

EveryOtherNameTaken · 17/09/2024 20:55

MithrilCostsMore · 23/03/2023 09:43

Short. I'm 5ft7" and consider 5ft4"-5ft7" average.

Same here.

I’m 5ft, it’s short but not abnormally short. I like being short though.

How do you get to this mindset?? I am also 5ft but I hate that. I feel like a gnome. If I maniacally stretch myself, I can push 5ft1. I absolutely hate this height. I feel like I did something wrong in previous life and don't deserve this. What's your secret?

What bothers you? I couldn't give a rats arse!
