I was always told as a child I'd be tall as an adult - by everyone around me - but my actual adult height is 5ft1/155cm. I'm female.

Yes it is short, like I am tall at 5'10, average is probably about 5'4"or 5'5" so you are not overly short like I am not overly tall

TheGoogleMum · 23/03/2023 16:50

Normal height! (I'm 4'8 though so everyone is tall compared to me)

I hardly ever 'meet' anyone the same height as me. Grin

dizzydizzydizzy · 23/03/2023 19:40

Some of the women in my family are 6", so in my world anyone below about 5'6" is tiny. (Obviously I know my view is distorted) 🤣

wingsandstrings · 23/03/2023 20:30

As someone who's 5ft1 herself I don't consider myself to be 'short' - I prefer petite! I like it though, and men seem to as well (not that that's too important, but I guess it's a signifier that I'm not freakishly small at 5ft1) - i have had a couple of boyfriends who were 6ft5 and my husband is 6ft2. I am taken seriously in my job. People don't point and laugh when I'm out 🤣. I don't have to buy kids clothes (although do have to get some trousers altered). So who cares really!

Cas112 · 23/03/2023 20:32

Short

TwirlyGalaxy · 23/03/2023 20:33

My daughter has a genetic condition and her current predicted adult height is around 4ft, I'd be landed if she hit 5ft1, so maybe in the past I'd have said short but now I'd say it's the shorter side of average. I'm considered very tall amongst my in-laws, I'm only 5ft8 but they act like I'm a giraffe so I think I'm used to being around smaller people 😂

Streamside · 23/03/2023 20:36

The worrying is that you shrink as you get older.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 23/03/2023 21:24

50% of all women are between 5'3 and 5'6, the 9th centile is 5'1" the 91st is at 5'8 and 82% are between 5'1" and 5'8"
so only 9% of women are shorter than 5'1" and only 9% are taller than 5'8"
so 5'3" to 5'6" is average, 5'1"-5'3 is short, under 5'1" very short, and on the other side 5'6" -5'8" is tall and over 5'8" is very tall that is just standard maths and centiles

Most men I've known have preferred "shorter" women. They definitely don't one taller than them or equal height. Must be some weird male thing!

Welshwabbit · 23/03/2023 21:37

It's short. I'm 160 cm and I'm short.

MenopauseSucks · 23/03/2023 22:10

I'm 5ft. I guess I'm short but don't really see myself as short.
However trousers/jeans are always too bloody long & I have a fold-out step stool that gets a lot of use.
But both my grandmothers were under 4ft 10in so I was taller than them!

And women preferring taller men must be some weird woman thing?

9% is around 6M people in the UK?

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 23/03/2023 22:39

@LuciferRising 9% of women in the UK is actually about is 3 million but it is still true that of every 10 women you met only 1 will be very tall and only one very short and the rest will be within a 7" range

xJoy · 23/03/2023 22:43

This is my height. I don't walk around feeling ''abnormally short''. I know my height is below average. I know a lot of people who are only a bit taller though. I'm not tall but I'm healthy and I never get back pain. It is what it is.

Saschka · 23/03/2023 22:57

It’s short, but it’s pretty normal for women to be short so doesn’t really matter. I’m 5’2 and have never noticed any disadvantages to being short, beyond the odd “ooh you’re short!” comment. I have red hair as well, and that gets far more comments.

Being a 5’1 woman is like being a 6’4 man - outside “average”, but society is neutral on it. Being a 5’4 man or a 6’0 woman is likely to get far more negative attention. Which is stupid, but there you are.

massifcentral · 23/03/2023 23:03

It seems short to me, but I'm 5'9''.

In fact, it's totally within the realm of normal. According to this calculator it's one standard deviation from the UK norm, so it's about as short as five six and a half is tall, if that makes sense!

tall.life/height-percentile-calculator-age-country/

If you moved to Bahrain you'd shoot up from the 17th percentile to the 54th!

But you probably want to avoid the Netherlands if feeling height conscious; there you would be on the 2.5th percentile.

By contrast, I'd be pretty average there, but in the 99.9th percentile in India!

massifcentral · 23/03/2023 23:08

It is btw NOT REMOTELY like being a 6'4'' man, at least in this country.

In every 100 women, on average, 16 or so will be shorter than you.

A man of 6'4'', standing with 99 other men, could expect to be the tallest, or close to that.

It is also not nearly as inconvenient. Most things will accommodate you. In fact, on planes you must be pretty comfortable.

Tangled123 · 23/03/2023 23:12

I’m 5ft1 and feel tiny most of the time, especially on nights out when everyone is wearing heels.

MedievalMadness · 23/03/2023 23:41

I’m 5’ and have a friend the same height. We are in our 60s and 70s respectively. I don’t personally known any adults shorter than us. I’ve always been small. I was 4lb at birth. 3 out of 4 DGPs were all short . My DBs are average height for their age and my DM was about 5’3.

JudgeRudy · 24/03/2023 00:35

Short, I'd say 5ft 5 was about average if you considered all ages but if you've late teens early 20s I'd imagine most of your friends are at least 6inches taller.
Does it bother you being the height you are or does it bother you being described as short....or have you had a disagreement with someone and want to see who's rights? (guessing not you).

katiisa · 24/03/2023 01:51

Cute & tiny

WitheredandOld · 24/03/2023 02:26

Yes I think that’s short.

I’m 5’6”. Most women I know are around 5’3” to 5’8”.

Belledan1 · 24/03/2023 03:42

TownsendThoresen · 23/03/2023 09:43

At an inch taller than you, I can confirm I suffer exactly the same problems !!

Me too. I nearly fall in to the freezers too when trying to get something from the back I am 5ft. I remember at 11 being on the back row in the school choir but I stopped growing at 11 I think. Also when small being over weight shows up more.
