I was always told as a child I'd be tall as an adult - by everyone around me - but my actual adult height is 5ft1/155cm. I'm female.

I'm that but never really feel short - big personality!

Always had average or tall boyfriends who loved a petite woman. I'd honestly hate to be tall - or have really big feet. I know some very tall women that feel the need to stoop or wear flats.

Only annoying things are supermarket shelves, having to use a step in the kitchen and sun visors in cars. Oh and carrying extra weight really shows so need to keep on top of that.

Don't find sleeves or trousers and issue as long limbed/short bodied.

Genuinely wouldn't change it.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 24/03/2023 10:21

average height increases very slowly overall the average height of all UK adult women is about 5'3½" for the next generation 19 year old women the average is closer to 5'4½" so even for younger woem the average range say 3½" either side ( about 82% of population) would be 5'1" to 5'8"
if you take the middle 50% the range is only about 3" so 50% of all adult younger women are between 5'3 and 5'6 ( average) including all adult women more like 5'2 to 5'5

bluetongue · 24/03/2023 10:52

It’s short. I should know, I’m the same height! I consider anything 5 foot and over short and 4 foot eleven or under very short.

Honestly I’d rather be this height as a woman that 6 feet. Most of the time it has no impact on my life and sometimes it even has advantages (plane legroom anyone). My biggest issue is not being able to each as much as most people and the fact that you can’t gain a few pounds without it being noticeable.

BashfulClam · 24/03/2023 10:55

It’s short, my mum is 5’1’’ I am 5’9” and most women in know and work with are about 5’5” and taller. I hate buying clothes as they are cut too short. I bought a normal length top yesterday and it looks like a bloody crop top!

Funkyblues101 · 24/03/2023 10:58

5ft 1 is very short. Surely you notice that almost everyone is taller than you?
5ft 3 and under is short. 5ft 4 to 5ft 8 average, 5ft 9 and above is tall. Roughly.

OoooohMatron · 24/03/2023 11:02

It's definitely short but quite normal. I'm 5,2 and although it is small I don't feel like everyone is towering over me.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 24/03/2023 11:11

if the average women is 5'4 if you line up one hundred women in height order she is the 50th, the range for average would go from woman 25 to woman 75 in uk this would be from 5'2½ to 5'5½, woman 90 would be about 5'8 and woman 10 5'1
there are approx 34million females in UK of which 28 million are over 15
so although only 9% are under 5'1" that is 2,500,000 women there are also 2,500,000 woman over 5'8 so not exactly rare

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2023 12:23

Human beings can’t possibly evolve that quickly. There’s no way that the current generation of young women is several inches taller than the previous one.

Not the six inches the PP imagined. But the upward trend in the U.K. isn't down to evolution - it's mainly better nutrition, I think. Older generations wouldn't all achieve and maintain their genetic potential height. Epigenetic factors can result in malnutrition in parents impacting children too (observed in the Dutch post war polupation for instance)

You're not average. 5' 3" is average.

I consider someone of 5'3" short! I don't live in the UK btw, we seem to be slightly taller here.

@Cattenberg ...no of course not. Re-read
I'm saying if she's older (60+) 5ft 1 could just about (possibly, at a pinch) be considered the lower end of the average range (with most peers being taller)
However.....if she's a young person she will definitely be considered short (compared to her peers) as she will be an inch or 2 below under the 'average range'. I'd say an average 20 year old is noticeably taller than an average 70 year old.
Likewise shoe sizes. Most women similar age to me are 5 or 6. Teens at school are now 6 and 7s

I'm 5'3, I'm considered short.

I am 5 foot nothing, I am very short, and its great because I can ride children's ponies.

CornishGem1975 · 23/03/2023 10:17

Do people see it as a negative? I've always quite enjoyed my petite stature!

I had friends that were crazy tall at school and they hated it far more than I disliked being short. They always had awkward posture and kind of slumped so they weren't towering over everyone else.

Me neither, I’m 5’2”, and have never really thought of myself as short.

I have a great figure (cringe) and I don’t think being taller necessarily equates to a better figure. I have had taller friends say they wish they had my figure.

I remember a Spanish shopkeeper once telling me that the best perfume comes in the smallest bottles!

weebarra · 24/03/2023 19:42

And I love going on holiday to the Netherlands but boy do I feel small. It's not unusual for me to sit on the loo and my feet not to touch the ground!

TownsendThoresen · 23/03/2023 09:42

Sorry just for clarity my initial post should've read 'sort of in the realms of average'

It is both below average and at the same time perfect 😁

JamSandle · 24/03/2023 20:23

Short but a perfectly lovely height.

Jimboscott0115 · 24/03/2023 21:00

Well at 5ft 2 you're probably around the 25th-30th percentile for UK women so fairly short.

Cainyp909 · 17/09/2024 01:27

CrotchetyCrocheting · 23/03/2023 09:46

I'd agree with this. I'm 5'6" and think of myself as average.

I'm sorry to break it to you but whatever you agree with you're wrong, I'm male and I've seen barely any females topping 5'6" or 5'7" this is not "average" this is considered tall don't suffer from delusions

5ft 3 and under is short. 5ft 4 to 5ft 8 average, 5ft 9 and above is tall. Roughly.

5'4" is "average" you must be delusional if you truly think a 5"8" female and I'm talking barefoot is considered average don't be silly that's tall as heck how many women are 5'8" without those heels and shoes

Cainyp909 · 17/09/2024 01:41

MithrilCostsMore · 23/03/2023 09:43

Short. I'm 5ft7" and consider 5ft4"-5ft7" average.

@MithrilCostsMore gotta break it to you that's more than delusional of you to even think 5'7" female with no shoes and no heels is "average" the average female height has only slightly increased for females in the UK I personally think the "kinda tall side" for women starts at 5'6"

Cainyp909 · 17/09/2024 01:45

LynnLardAssian · 23/03/2023 09:45

Tiny! But I’m 5’11. One of my best friends if 5ft and we look like a comedy duo out together Grin.

Id say anything 5’4 and under is short.

@LynnLardAssian whos care whippty do your 5'11" that doesn't mean you can overhaul and make up that 5'4" and under is small that's screaming delusions right there. 5'4" for a woman is average point blank period

coxesorangepippin · 17/09/2024 02:04

Short but not second glance short
