I was always told as a child I'd be tall as an adult - by everyone around me - but my actual adult height is 5ft1/155cm. I'm female.

Short. I'm 5ft7 and consider myself average.

snitzelvoncrumb · 24/03/2023 04:09

I am female and that height. I am reminded at least once a day about how short I am.

You're not average. 5' 3" is average.

https://www.onaverage.co.uk/body-averages/average-female-height

This says 5ft4.7 is average for a UK woman which 'feels' more right to me.

I feel as if 5ft3 might be right if you include all the shrunken older ladies, but not if you were to only include say 20-40year olds.

moanyhole · 24/03/2023 06:41

I'm 5.1 my dad is 5.1 my mom is 4.10. so I did alright!! My DH is 6.2 and I do feel short next to him but day to day it doesn't really register me that I'm short. My mom is 87 now and has shrunk but I doubt it bothers her, she's just delighted to be still alive.

MrsJBaptiste · 24/03/2023 06:46

5ft 1 is very short (to me) as I'm 5ft 9.

I do think it's shorter that average though, there aren't many people who are o lying around the 5ft mark.

BringMeTea · 24/03/2023 06:49

Really rather short. Isn't that shorter than Kylie? Using Kylie as a yardstick of 'short' here.

LuciferRising · 24/03/2023 07:23

Do the shrunken old ladies not count?

twinklystar23 · 24/03/2023 07:24

I'm 5ft 1" recall wearing some 4/5 " wedge sandals once. Whilst standing in a queue noticed that there were a lot of short women out today! 😁

Hardly ever come across other adults shorter than me so was quite significant the number women under my heel stacked height!

I don't mind too much being short, reaching high shelves and being armpit level on public transport are the downsides! Though DH is only 5' 7 sons are similar, do feel a bit like a family of hobbies!

If you are trying to see whether a 30year old who is 5ft 2 is short, then 80 year olds aren't really part of the peer group you should compare them against.
Partly because the population is getting taller, but especially as women shrink when they get old. My DM and I used to be similar heights, she is now considerably shorter than I am.

booboo24 · 24/03/2023 07:36

I'm 5ft 2.5"!!!! Always been considered short by friends and family. My ex husband and father of our children is 6ft 2 so my youngest is 5ft 3 and my eldest is 5ft 7. Everyone towers over me !!! I would say we are the short side of average to be honest. My sister is 4ft 11 that's definitely short!!!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 24/03/2023 07:37

I’m 5ft 1 & I’m short. Doesn’t bother me at all. Ppl have said to me “oooh I didnt realise you were that short till I stood next to you”, I rarely wear heels so maybe I project height or something 😆

GeekyThings · 24/03/2023 07:43

You're just under average, so short, same as me! Average in the UK is 5ft 4in, although I've seen other surveys that come up with 5ft 3in as average for women as well, so I'd say anything from around 5ft 3in to 5ft 5in is around average.

I'm not understanding all the people who are 5ft 7in saying they're average though - that's tall for a woman, clearly!

Coolblur · 24/03/2023 09:02

Well on the basis that under 5ft would very definitely be considered short for an adult, you, at only two inches more, are shorter than average.
I consider average to be 5'4" to 5'6". But it's all relative I guess.

mondaytosunday · 24/03/2023 09:08

Very short. My friend is that height and her daughter shorter and I think of her as tiny, but then I'm almost 6 ft so I would! But no it's not average, which is 5'4", though I'm surprised it's that as I think most people I know are a lot taller.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2023 09:20

The Wikipedia page gives U.K. average women's height for the whole population as 5"3.5 and the estimate for 19yos as 5"4.5 .

So even for youngsters, 5"1 is only as far from the average as 5"8 - neither of those is 'average' but they're 'normal' in the non statistical sense of 'not unusual'.

PastaLaVistaBabee · 24/03/2023 09:26

Yes it's short. I'm 5ft6 or 5ft7 ish and it feels about average. To be fair though, I would looove to be smaller! I always wanted to be petite and I'd swap heights with u any day!!

Sandysandwich · 24/03/2023 09:48

Its short.
Not surprisingly so, or unusually short just short.

I am 5'4, feel completely average for a woman, there are plently around who are taller and shorter than me. Feel short next to most men though.

That's only true if you're using the figure for 19 year olds only, which is a bit pointless as they make up less than 2% of the population. If you use the one for the entire population then 5ft 1in is much closer to average than 5ft 8in, by around half.

Cattenberg · 24/03/2023 09:56

JudgeRudy · 24/03/2023 00:35

Short, I'd say 5ft 5 was about average if you considered all ages but if you've late teens early 20s I'd imagine most of your friends are at least 6inches taller.
Does it bother you being the height you are or does it bother you being described as short....or have you had a disagreement with someone and want to see who's rights? (guessing not you).

Human beings can’t possibly evolve that quickly. There’s no way that the current generation of young women is several inches taller than the previous one.

Sealover123 · 24/03/2023 10:04

Short, but not dramatically so.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 24/03/2023 10:05

like Others I would say 5.4-5.6 is 'average' at least amongst younger generations (30s-40s). I am 5'5 and still often told I am short.

SVRT19674 · 24/03/2023 10:07

Short. But I´m 1.75 metres, so not sure if biased.

Well...@Cattenberg , I cannot speak for all humans, but I am one of nine cousins and every one of us is one head taller than our parents... Cannot say if it evolution or that our parents generation grew up during and after the civil war (I´m in Spain) and the 1940s and we were fed properly when kids in the 70s and 80s, unlike them.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/03/2023 10:16

If you're of Caucasian heritage then yes, it's short.

I was always tall for my age until I got into my teens, and stopped growing whilst loads of my friends overtook me. I'm 5'5" which I think is average. I'd say average is between 5'3" and 5'8". My sister is 5'1" and her daughter aged 18 is 5ft exactly. They are both short.

My feet and hands are huge, I wear size 8 shoes, so clearly I'm supposed to be taller 🤣🤣
