To think work are being ridiculous

For work the main lanyard we are issued is a purple wire thin lanyard (photo attached). Myself and some other colleagues don’t like thin lanyards like that. The only other lanyard we are issued is wider like a normal lanyard, it’s a pride lanyard with the company logo on. We’ve asked work if we can buy and use our own lanyard and we were told. Aibu to think work are being a bit strict and ridiculous? What difference does it make if we use our own lanyard?

Is it to make identifying outsiders easier, so a security measure? If so then I can see where they’re coming from. Could you just get a thicker purple one and wait to see if anyone picks up on it?

its part of work uniform I guess so they are giving you the choice of two lanyards you have to choose from

For us it's about security.

We have different coloured lanyards for staff, and for different types of visitors (contractors, visitors from other offices, those that must be accompanied at all times) They must be visible or we can be stopped and asked who we are.

Wearing the wrong lanyard could have security called until they worked out who you are.

So use the pride one then? They have given you two choices, which seems ample.

I wear a lanyard daily, we have different colours depending on our staff category. I never questioned it.

Why does it being thin make a difference, does it hurt your neck or something?

It doesn't matter if you like them to be fair. That's their company uniform policy. Why won't you wear the thicker ones?

Its not as thin as wire though is it? You have a choice of 2, this is a non issue.

Who cares though? It’s not about what you like. It’s a work lanyard not a fashion statement.

Rainbow doesn’t mean ‘pride’.

Seems like a long winded way of making some sort of point, but you could just use the normal lanyard. It’s a total non issue and embarrassing for an adult woman to be whinging over something like this.

I'm struggling to understand what's wrong with the other one. I'm guessing it's a rainbow lanyard? Do you dislike rainbows or is it that you don't want to be identified as supporting LGBT rights?

I think work are perfectly reasonable. They have given you two options. There is no good reason you can't wear one of them. If you disagreed because they didn't have break points and you work in an area where assaults happen then I'd agree with you on buying your own, but preference isn't a good reason.

I used to wear my identity tag on a long string of pearls. Then we had to use the right one.

I have some sympathy, OP, because I hate having to wear a lanyard of any sort.

I have big tits (36GG) and don't like anything that can draw attention to them. When we were issued lanyards, they were of such a length that mine ended just below my boobs, and it made me feel very self-conscious. A couple of weeks later, we were offered the choice of a clip thing so that you could attach your ID card to the hem of your top or jacket.

Are you in a public-facing role? If so, the lanyard needs to have a joining bit that will snap if anyone grabs you by it.

But, yes, I'd wear the other one if you prefer it.

It’s about brand visual identity and helps bring employers together as instantly recognisable. I had no idea anyone would have such strong opinions about the thickness. That’s hilarious 🤣
