To think work are being ridiculous

For work the main lanyard we are issued is a purple wire thin lanyard (photo attached). Myself and some other colleagues don’t like thin lanyards like that. The only other lanyard we are issued is wider like a normal lanyard, it’s a pride lanyard with the company logo on. We’ve asked work if we can buy and use our own lanyard and we were told. Aibu to think work are being a bit strict and ridiculous? What difference does it make if we use our own lanyard?

Wear the pride one then.

TeenLifeMum · 19/03/2023 10:17

@LakieLady i totally get that - that’s a legitimate reason not to wear it.

itbemay · 19/03/2023 10:17

Put it in at the front door at work and take it off when you finish. It's work!

Abyss23 · 19/03/2023 10:18

Pick your battles OP. I wouldn't choose a pride lanyard but if it was the only one offered I'd just get on with it.

Christmapartyhelp · 19/03/2023 10:22

Just waiting for the op to come back and explain that they don’t want to wear the pride lanyard because trans people something something …….

WandaWonder · 19/03/2023 10:23

If one of them sits there looking at you with shifty judgemental lanyard eyes pick the other one

raspberrywine · 19/03/2023 10:23

YANBU

I get you, OP. Thin lanyards dig into you and it rubs and hurts. And I wouldn't wear a Pride lanyard.

I would get a wider purple one. Can't you all chip in and get a load and all just come into work with them? What can they do if you all protest?

TimeForMeToF1y · 19/03/2023 10:25

Are you hoping that the lanyard manager from your work going to see this thread and explain the policy for you,?

Seems that might not be quite as effective as asking them directly, but maybe you aren't in a hurry to know or don't mind random guessea

dreamingbohemian · 19/03/2023 10:25

Protesting lanyards. Seriously?

The state this country is in, no one takes to the streets, but the thin lanyard is worth getting up in arms about. Okay.

DojaPhat · 19/03/2023 10:26

If you'd posted this in a different section you'd have garnered more sympathy. This wouldn't bother me but in my workplace they'd also issue standard black/navy blue ones as a matter of course.

blumppump · 19/03/2023 10:26

We have to wear the lanyard we are issued for security reasons as it is coded to your security access level and is a quick and easy way to tell if you're allowed where you are.

AnnoyedFromSlough · 19/03/2023 10:27

If they are being ridiculous, so are you. You have a choice of two. It's just a lanyard. It's not like they are asking you to wear shoes that hurt your feet or a uniform that doesn't fit. Pick one and use it.

PupInAPram · 19/03/2023 10:27

Wire thin???

lap90 · 19/03/2023 10:28

It's you who sounds ridiculous IMO. It's a lanyard...

Flamingogirl08 · 19/03/2023 10:28

So the issue is you don't want to be seen to be supporting Pride then?

How on earth are you wearing your lanyard in order for it to 'dig in'?

Get x3 and plait them together

This is what I'd do.

Capricornone1 · 19/03/2023 10:31

FFS You are being totally ridiculous

Whyisitsososohard · 19/03/2023 10:33

Sounds like you have a specific issue regarding being seen to support pride.

Lot's of people do. I used to support gay pride though

MelchiorsMistress · 19/03/2023 10:36

I’m the same as you OP, I wouldn’t choose to wear a pride lanyard but would prefer to wear a thicker one than the one in the picture just for comfort.

The company can’t say it’s all about uniform and easily identifying who is who if you have free choice between two completely different lanyards. I’d buy your own plain purple one and wait to see if they complain.

Viviennemary · 19/03/2023 10:36

I feel sorry for your employers having to deal with this petty nonsense. You should do as your told or get a new job.

How on earth are you wearing your lanyard in order for it to 'dig in'?

Depends what you carry on your lanyard - I used to have a couple of bunches of work keys, ID badge, work multitool, hand sanitiser and card holder (for my debit card and swipe card) because my uniform didn't have pockets except in the fleece jacket that I didn't want to have to carry around just for storage - so it could get pretty hefty and a thin lanyard would have started to dig in the back of my neck after a while.

Having said that, the OP is being ridiculous - if work require you to wear specific lanyards then it is part of the uniform standard. They have two options of lanyards, the thin purple one or the wider pride (by which I assume it is a rainbow) one ... Choosing one or the other is not a fashion statement so why does it matter? Everyone at work knows you only have the two options so if you're wearing the rainbow one then it's because it's the wide one and more comfortable

I don’t, and we have rainbow lanyards.

I wear the rainbow one because it’s nicer than the plain ones at work. I do support pride but I don’t consciously wear the rainbow one in solidarity with anyone I just think it’s prettier.

this is such a non issue though. What a reason to start a post!

DojaPhat · 19/03/2023 10:39

You'll definitely have a job on your hands explaining to work why you don't like the choices on offer.
