Am dating this guy.

Early days.

I offered to cook for him.

Asked him, is there anything you don’t eat.

Only veg he eats are peas and sweetcorn and tomatoes if they are in a sauce.

Wtaf? And no he’s not 5 he’s in his 40s

Reminds me of this thread, OP.

RampantIvy · 13/03/2023 22:19

It isn't about being a snob, it's about being incompatible. If someone loves to go to good restaurants, or travel and explore different world cuisines; then they're not going to be compatible with someone who only eats toddler food.

I agree. Although if he liked all the cuisines I liked and just swerved the vegetables I could put up with it if he was great in all other aspects.

If he only ate plain food and just two vegetables then I would find it rather boring limiting. I couldn't imagine going to a Greek island, for example, and then only sticking to tavernas that sold English food.

I've lived all over Asia and I stand by what I said. I ate so many dishes that had very little veg in them. Maybe you should try doing the same some time?

You lived all over Asia and failed to notice 25% of India is veggie?

jays · 13/03/2023 22:24

He would need to be top- end ‘elsewhere’ for me to plough on after the veg revelation.

No "card" involved - just hope potential partners aren't binning you and fellow sufferers because you can't eat the same as they do?

Where has eating “the same” been mentioned?

Hearmeout · 13/03/2023 22:28

If he's good in bed I'd allow it.

Nimrode · 13/03/2023 22:30

@Besswess88 So you asked if there's anything he doesn't eat?
He gave you an honest answer, but you didn't like his answer.
This doesn't bode well.

I don't believe that for a second. Apart from anything else, you refer to 'the Asian culture'. Any particular Asian culture?
Is it difficult to eat when your knuckles are dragging on the floor?

Prinzesa · 13/03/2023 22:33

Assessing someone on any level based on which food items they do/do not eat is a whole new level of batshittery, even for mumsnet 😅 love it!!

No you haven't. For a start you think Asia is one place with a single culture, and all the food is "rice, meat and curries".

Is Japan rice meat and curry? Korea, Thailand, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka?
Asia has by far the most vegetarians and vegans than anywhere in the world.

The nearesy you got to Asia is the all you can eat chinese buffet on the ring road in Slough.

Not batshit at all. When thinking of dating someone you ask what they're interested in etc. If he's into racing pigeons and you're into art galleries it's not going to work. If you're an adult who loves food, decent restaurants and cooking and he has the dietary preferences of a four-year-old, it's not going to work.

It's actually totally normal.

AlmostaMamma · 13/03/2023 22:38

MulletAndMustache · 13/03/2023 20:00

I find this quite an odd attitude. We all have things that we like and don’t like, whether it’s food, drinks, hobbies, etc. We don’t have to go along with stuff we don’t like to be ‘polite’.

Obviously if you don’t want to date them that’s fine, any reason is ok not to date someone. But to say you don’t understand people having food preferences is just weird. You don’t really have to understand.

People aren’t preparing you hobbies, though. It’s a flawed analogy. For food and drink, yes, most of us have stuff we like and stuff we’d rather not have. However, items from the latter category won’t kill us. So if someone takes the time to make us a meal, we eat it and say thank you.

Not every meal has to be your favourite.

ChilliBandit · 13/03/2023 22:39

@Mirabai - vegetarian doesn’t necessarily mean they eat vegetables…

Prinzesa · 13/03/2023 22:42

@purplevipersgrass we all eat! 😅 which stuff he eats and which stuff she eats hardly stops them from enjoying food and restaurants, this is just one of the oddest threads i've ever read.. life is so full of judgemental f*ckrs with so much to judge already.. we gotta start on what people like the taste of?! sorry, madness.

Mirabai · 13/03/2023 22:23

There are a ton of dishes out there that don't require much veg. That is a fact. I don't eat much veg myself - onions, mushrooms, some salad and peppers at a push. I ate a ton of food in Asia without any issues whatsoever. I much prefer Asian food to Western food though, probably for this very reason. Also, there is a huge difference between a dish having some veg blended in (curries, pad thai, chicken cashew etc) than a British dish serving a separate plateful of carrots, mash. peas, broccoli etc. That genuinely turns my stomach so I know how he feels.

OP - Make some dishes with some veg chopped up and blended in rather than it being separate on a plate. I personally find this way more palatable, and I think he'll probably think the same too.

Prinzesa · 13/03/2023 22:44

I'm probably a lot more well cultured and travelled that you...

Prinzesa · 13/03/2023 22:48

@bizzywiththefizzy 😄😄😄 true! but i think eating liver is vile 🤢 finding someone 'unattractive' for liking it tho ..... batshittery!

Tisasatsuma · 13/03/2023 22:49

Totally up to you. I also love food, eating out and cooking so it probably would be a deal breaker for me. In the same way that I'm just not interested in sport. For someone that loves sport, plays regularly, coaches etc, my disinterest may be a deal breaker. That doesn't mean I'm wrong or they are, just an incompatibility.

Prinzesa · 13/03/2023 22:44

it really really is.
Vegans judge meat eaters. Lots of people judge fast food lovers. People who love spice judge people who only eat bland. People who are adventerous judge those who eat the same things all the time.
And definitely judge grown adults who eat like toddlers.

Not every meal has to be your favourite.

BUT she asked him if there were any foods he didn’t eat. He answered. Should he have lied to be polite? Lying would be much more of a red flag.

Even if someone had already prepared food without asking preferences, we shouldn’t have to eat it just to please others. That’s so weird.
