To be fucked off about nursery fees

Ladyrantalot · 12/03/2023 10:44

So, here we are, DH and I slaving away full time, paying a grand a month for nursery until our ‘free’ hours kicked in after 2 years. Put off having DC2 because we didn’t have the money to have 2 in nursery at once.

By comparison, my sis who doesn’t work and hasn’t since she quit her job on her first maternity leave 4 years ago, also has 30 free hours despite the fact she’s at home, has no intention of working in the next few years and doesn’t need it 🤷🏼‍♀️

AIBU to find the way us full-time-but-just-over-the-threshold workers are treated fucking maddening? We’re mugs aren’t we? And other people have the nerve to tell us we’re ‘lucky to be working’, yeah right.

I don't understand the idea that a 2 person household should be funded by only 1 of those people

Or by a combination of 1 of those people and the govt.

Because Mn thinks everyone should get everything subsidised/free at the expense of others and if you disagree you’re ‘mean’. Lol

Good childcare enhances a child's learning and social opportunities. Making friends, experiencing new things.

Theyre nice-to-haves and should only be offered once working people can comfortably afford the nursery they need.

These things are not more essential than working parents being able to pay their bills.

They are not 'nice to haves'!! I think you need to read up on the early years and how important they are. You're coming across as angry, rude, and ignorant tbh.

Botw1 · 12/03/2023 11:26

@EmmaDilemma5

Says the person who presumes everyone is English

🙄

Babyroobs · 12/03/2023 11:27

Why is everything more generous in Scotland ? Free Uni education, free prescriptions, more free childcare.

thimblewomble879 · 12/03/2023 11:27

I'm baffled by your stance! How is it at the expense of others

Yes it does make me angry. So what? Is anger only for men?

I think you need to read up on how many people who are entitled to nothing are in the red every month and can hardly pay their mortgage. Where’s the help for that?

Hang on you get 15 hours free if you are not working, which I do agree with as it is not about giving the parents a break but about helping prepare dc for school.

If you are NOT working you can only get the 30 hours if you are disabled as far as I am aware.

From governments website.

'If you are not currently working
You may still be eligible if your partner is working, and you get Incapacity Benefit, Severe Disablement Allowance, Carer’s Allowance, Limited Capability for Work Benefit or contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance.'

If her sis isn’t working because she’s sick or disabled, then this is just nasty.

MotherofBingo · 12/03/2023 11:27

The funded hours aren't for the parents benefits, they are for the child because it's been proven that statistically children from lower income families have less chance of suceeding in school than those from wealthier families, nursery helps close that gap.

I understand the jealousy - my partner and I work and can't afford any more children or a bigger home, meanwhile two people very close to us don't work and are able to have as many children as they like and have lovely homes that they pay a lot less for. I'm not going to lie, it breaks my heart because I would love another baby and they both keep asking me why I don't just have one, neither seem to understand that in some ways they are luckier than I am. But it's not actually their fault, it's the way the system works, there are flaws but without it more children would suffer so I don't begrudge it.

They don't have a Tory govt.

It's not just MN, most of the population seem to think everything should be free, or they've earned it , or it's owed to them etc.

Do they pay higher taxes to fund all these freebies?

Oh fuck off.

I agree. That just saying you ‘need’ something or ‘should’ have it somehow magics up the funds. Like children themselves.

Ladyrantalot · 12/03/2023 11:21

Why should we pay for them when you don’t? 🤷🏼‍♀️

We do pay for them, my husband works but I choose not to. Why should you get 15 hours free, you’re not paying for them either

Anotherturnipforthebooks · 12/03/2023 11:29

@Babyroobs

Yes.

Axahooxa · 12/03/2023 11:29

Her child gets opportunities to socialise and learn in a nursery setting. That’s why it’s funded.

But you are not. You are making one contribution rather than 2. But want things subsidised by families making 2.

thimblewomble879 · 12/03/2023 11:30

Yea I do understand tax and benefits.

I paid a fortune in tax when I worked. My husband pays a fortune in tax now

I'm sure your sister has paid tax. I'm sure her husband/ partner does as well. Your sister plans to work again in the future.

So she's getting the benefit of "free hours". You could have the same if you chose to be a sahp.

Northernlass13 · 12/03/2023 11:31

Op, I know your frustrated but like others have said, it’s not just about the parent.
if your sister isn’t working then the child will only get 15 hours free which in reality isn’t that much. It will have to stretch over the year or just term time.
I have two children both under two and I couldn’t afford to send both as it works out at over £2k per month. I had to give up work as it didn’t benefit me working (I’d be out of pocket)
the older child is just about to start nursery but I’ll still have the younger one at home.
I live off my savings.
This will give me a chance to spend quality time with the younger and run the home.
I will return to work when they are both in school but you have to do what’s best for you and your family.
please don’t judge as it’s really hard and maybe it just doesn’t pay for her to go to work.
I know it might seem unfair op xx

Nope. Moaning others that don’t need it get it for free. If you can’t see the difference then I can’t help you tbh!
