To be fucked off about nursery fees

Ladyrantalot · 12/03/2023 10:44

So, here we are, DH and I slaving away full time, paying a grand a month for nursery until our ‘free’ hours kicked in after 2 years. Put off having DC2 because we didn’t have the money to have 2 in nursery at once.

By comparison, my sis who doesn’t work and hasn’t since she quit her job on her first maternity leave 4 years ago, also has 30 free hours despite the fact she’s at home, has no intention of working in the next few years and doesn’t need it 🤷🏼‍♀️

AIBU to find the way us full-time-but-just-over-the-threshold workers are treated fucking maddening? We’re mugs aren’t we? And other people have the nerve to tell us we’re ‘lucky to be working’, yeah right.

You are lucky to be able to work. One day you may not be so lucky.

MeinKraft · 12/03/2023 18:01

SHE doesn't get free hours, her child does. It's to benefit the children of parents who couldn't otherwise afford to give them the stimulation they would get from nursery.

Fuckthatguy · 12/03/2023 18:08

@SalmonKnicks yes, it makes no sense, is the point, can you please explain.

Fuckthatguy · 12/03/2023 18:09

@SalmonKnicks

@RainbowBrightside added a pointy hand…

in case you’re wondering….

I've been both, but my point is that being a sahm is the hardest job ever according to some but a sign of laziness to others.

Oh I see, yes most people assume that being a sahm means you’re on benefits

Flamingogirl08 · 14/03/2023 20:22

Has anybody heard that free 30 hours might be extended to 1 and 2 year olds? I'm not sure who will qualify but OPs head might explode.

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/03/2023 21:54

Jeremy Hunt to announce expansion of free childcare support www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-64959611 Link - extension of free childcare

GodSaveTheClean · 14/03/2023 22:08

The hours are for the benefit of the child. The child gets fewer of those beneficial hours because one parent doesn’t work. Your child gets more of those beneficial hours because you do work. Anything over that is your responsibility to pay.

I can’t begrudge a child free childcare.

Do they pay higher taxes to fund all these freebies?

Yes. We pay higher taxes in Scotland. It’s almost as if we pay for what’s spent here…..

Oh honey. You can call it “pride” all you want, but the fact of the matter is you chose to put yourself first and allow someone else to raise your kids for years on end.

😂😂😂😂

Is your husband aware you don’t think he’s raising your kids? Even as he pays for every morsel of food they eat?

Still, good to hear you don’t need the free hours as you wouldn’t want someone else raising your kid for 15 hours a week. Going to be more challenging when you can’t send them to school either because you don’t want teachers raising your kid for you.

Walkaround · 15/03/2023 06:23

And when everyone of working age is working full time and you are still struggling, I’m sure you’ll be very happy, OP. And if a childless person comes along and calls you a selfish fucker with no sense of pride for having kids you can’t afford and which they have to subsidise, you won’t call them angry or bitter. Or if another working person says you are obviously lazy and didn’t work hard enough at school to be earning so little, you will apologise profusely for your foolish career choices.

To be fair, a growing number of people are choosing home education for their children and there is a lot of resentment about elements of the national curriculum in some quarters. Be careful how you taunt people when society is already groaning under the weight of a loss of consensus. Maybe it’s better that people want their children to join in than that they don’t, or that they are forced to.

sst1234 · 15/03/2023 07:53

You are not wrong OP. But this is MN, where if you are living off the taxpayer, which she most probably is as her household is unlikely to be net contributor, then you are the salt of the earth. If, however, you are paying your own way, then just put up and shut up. In fact you are probably not paying enough for other people to have more than they are already get for free. That’s why this country is in such a mess, because people have become lazy, expecting freebies all the time. And the the corrupt government know that they can bribe the public to its a few scraps every now and then to shut the idiots up.

You don’t pay for what you spend. You get subsidized by the rest of the UK, namely England.

Walkaround · 15/03/2023 07:55

Free nursery care for working parents is a bribe…

Scotland’s oil revenues subsidised England for years, though, didn’t they? It’s farcical to think England would want to keep Scotland in any union it does not benefit from itself. And since a lot of “English” tax revenue for years has come from profits made on money laundering for oligarchs by financial institutions, I’m not sure anyone really wants to look too closely at where UK tax revenue really comes from.

SoupDragon · 12/03/2023 10:54

I mean, if you want to be judgy and snide about who deserves what, why should anyone get free childcare? If you choose to have children it should come as no surprise you need to pay for childcare or look after them yourself.

Because anyone who is working pays tax and helps the economy! The government gets return in terms of tax money if it keeps women in the workforce, it’s worth funding some childcare for working mums.
But I understand mothers on low incomes, it’s just not worth it - they work to pay for childcare and there is simply no leftover money. Lots of rich people not paying tax so why would they pull their weight, for no benefit whatsoever.
No need to punish their children though, early education and social skills are very important for development.

Plumbear2 · 18/03/2023 17:36

She can get 15 hours from 3 for education. It's been like this for years, I got it for my first child 22 years ago. It for pre school education not for working parents.

Plumbear2 · 18/03/2023 17:44

And Im not sure why 3 years olds should miss out on their pre school education that the are entitled to, just because you throw a hissy fit.
