To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

And what about that woke Churchill and the ECHR, that bill doesn't reflect British values according to Braverman

Went to Harrow, which whilst better than Haileybury, still isnt Eton or Winchester and we all know what those on The Hill are like.

no, by the reasoning on this thread, they should take in far less, but they take in far more

Geninuely there have been posters arguing on this thread and others that how many refugees a country takes should be based on the land area. Although they do get awfully upset when I start posting about Antarctica.

Yes, owned by that renowned lefty Nadhim Zahawi, who crashed the pound during his brief tenure as Liz Truss's chancellor!

That was Kwasi Kwarteng - you're getting you incompetent useless tories mixed up.

Easily done, admittedly.

Yes, what a snowflake he was! He wanted a United States of Europe, too, the Brexiteers and xenophobes must hate him.

Too left wing by far, which is why the Tory party had to act to replace them.

Sunak

1st in PPE at Oxford
Masters in Business Admin

Braverman:

master's degree in European and French law
worked in litigation including the judicial review "basics" for a government practitioner of immigration and planning law.

Patel

Degree in economics
postgrad studies in British government and politics

Lineker

‘I got an A in maths and in one of the English O-levels and probably a B in geography. I was always fairly hopeless at science and got a couple of Ds. I used to enjoy history and then we had a teacher who seemed hell-bent on converting us to communism; I got Ungraded for history.’

I don't mean to suggest academia is the be all and end all. But Gary doesn't seem quite as well qualified as all the 2nd gen immigrants he's criticising.

but Lineker is probably the only one who knows any actual refugees.....

YANBUUUUUUUUU sister!!!!!! Economy’s tanking, cost of living crisis, dingdingding! like clockwork the govt and media start banging on about immigrants, Look! over there! Those brown people are the cause of all your problems. Don’t look at us, we’re just the ones who’ve been in government for over a decade and have pissed hundreds of billions away on dodgy PPE contracts for our mates, shoddy track and trace software, 30 billion on a couple of idiots’ “mini budget”, Brexit, the list goes on. Years of austerity and we’re all worse off than when we started but the Tories and their chums are doing very nicely indeed thanks. All is well, stop moaning and go eat some turnips you cunts. Thanks Gary, nice little sideshow, managed to keep the heat off a bit longer, we can always rely on the tabloid audience and plenty of mugs on this thread about to enthusiastically lap up the same old bullshit.

Well they were fine British horses so they certainly should have had heating.

On the subject of polls which of these do you like best?

I like Savanta's poll in your link - Labour's lead is down to 11 points in that one:

NEW Westminster Voting Intention
11pt Labour Lead - lowest since December
Lab 43 (-1)
Con 32 (+3)
LD 9 (=)
➡️Reform 5 (-1)
SNP 4 (=)
Green 3 (=)
Other 5 (=)
2,138 UK adults, 3-5 March
(chg from 24-26 Feb)

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

This is how low the Tory party has sunk. One of their biggest fans likes a poll that shows that 1/3 more people want to vote for another party than the Tories.

I’ve been thinking about this overnight. I know this thread has tangented so forgive me for just sticking my thought in while you’re all arguing.

There’s something about extremely rich people telling everyone what to think that just jarrs. I’m not convinced that any of these people taking to Twitter and evangelising honestly give a shit about the average pleb on the street. It’s basically whatever the hot potato subject is of the moment and how they can position themselves to gain the most positive publicity.

Maybe Gary Lineker really does care about political injustice. I suspect if you are in the lofty position of being able to buy in services in the way millionaires can, it’s really easy to think there are enough resources for everyone. But I don’t think the average person struggling to access their GP service or watching another green space disappear for housing thinks that more and more people entering the country is positive.

It’s not that people want to be bigoted. I think very often people are worried and concerned. So while we can agree that having privilege and using it to lift others more vulnerable is laudable. It’s also important to recognise the privilege itself. Check yourself and make sure you don’t have those opinions within the bubble of your own wealth and lifestyle.

What time is MOTD on?
Perhaps we should all stand on our doorsteps and applaud at that time?

That would be fabulous, but it would need wider publicity than MN.

If anyone on my street starts, I'll join in though.

If this is correct then it’s a fair point

Germany is also 47% larger than the UK. The UK population is around 67.4 million, and the German population is 83.4 million.

But Gary Lineker opens his home to refugees and spends his time supporting and advocating for them.

How is that living in a bubble?

What do you personally do for refugees? More, or less than Lineker does? So who has the most right to comment?

Yeah. He's also the Chancellor of the Exchequer who was fined by HMRC for tax evasion. The Tories are a wealth of embarrassment.

30 billion on “mini budget”

False fact. At least £20 billion was due to 'tax cuts' - some of which didn't go ahead anyway - others such as reversing the NI insurance increase Labour want to keep. Are you going to claim that Labour have 'lost' £12/£13 billion by supporting the NI U-turn? The Bank of England made a 'profit' of £3.8bn here as well;
