To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

‘I got an A in maths and in one of the English O-levels and probably a B in geography. I was always fairly hopeless at science and got a couple of Ds. I used to enjoy history and then we had a teacher who seemed hell-bent on converting us to communism; I got Ungraded for history.’

I don't mean to suggest academia is the be all and end all. But Gary doesn't seem quite as well qualified as all the 2nd gen immigrants he's criticising.

You don't need an oxbridge first to recognise what inhumane treatment looks like.

The BBC must have a contractual basis to act, it includes SM private accounts and all those who freelance too

The editorial guidelines cover how impartiality of BBC might be put at risk in certain scenarios, in cases precisely like this one the guidelines suggest the risk was low

They need to sack him first don’t you think?

I know you care hugely but someone will take the millions

Oh bless. You can't answer any of my questions. It's like trying to have a sensible conversation with a Tory MP. 😁

Please do not introduce facts to this thread.

Everything is Gary Linekar, But Jeremy Corbyn and asylum seekers faults.
For example between those 3 groups they have caused a housing crisis that means there are 1/4 million empty homes in the UK. Pretty good work for a group of about 50,000 people.

Apricotlemonade · 11/03/2023 09:27

The difficulties everywhere and running into the ground of the NHS are due to the government which has been in power for some time. Nobody else. They are up shit creek and trying to shift blame as they know it’s now abundantly clear to most so yes using media tactics from 1930s Germany.

It is scary how clear it is that the BBC curtails to the Tory party- this, Fiona Bruce and the David Attenborough debacle. I don’t want to pay my license fee to support the Tories.

TomeTome · 11/03/2023 09:27

”It doesn’t matter whether you agree with him or not - I’m feeling quite shocked that the BBC is so openly controlled by government policy.”

Damn right, deeply concerning. Reports that an episode of Attenborough to be cancelled, lest it offend the right wing.

Have you read Alan Sugar’s tweets?? Why does he get away with those, I wonder?

He deleted this controversial one;

March 2018
Alan Sugar has deleted a tweet depicting Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in a car alongside Adolf Hitler, following calls for him to "disown" it.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell had appealed to the businessman to delete it and "bring people together".

John Mann, chairman of the all-party group against anti-Semitism, said the use of Nazi comparators was "demeaning, unwarranted and dangerous".

Shadow cabinet minister Jon Trickett called the post "grossly misjudged and deeply offensive".

Well @AggieTop this sort of scenario which you describe about your daughter is a very valid and important point. It's a sad fact that a woman cannot walk around safely because of the migrants in the hotels.
It doesn't matter if they are rehoused either, the attitudes towards women remain. I've said it before, the values towards women in particular are not compatible with ours and are putting females at risk. I fear we are heading to a place where sharia law becomes the norm and it seems that this discussion is shut down because if anyone brings it up, they are classed as far right. Healthy discussion always veers on the favour of the left who claim all migrants are hard working, good values, ready to work in the NHS and integrate with British culture and values. If you dare to say otherwise you are told you are a raging right wing racist.
I cannot stand Linekar, he does not live in the real world. I would never listen to someone like him over this issue. Find him a raging hypocrite especially on the whole Quatar scenario. I also think views will be biased here because plenty of MN'ers are upper classes and so like Gary, are not experiencing the same issues such as those who actually are. I'm sure everyone will start disagreeing with me on that but there we are.

👏👏👏

Exactly or to see bias by the BBC and media manipulation by the Tory party.

Don’t think the lies a la millions for the NHS after Brexit are going to wash now.

@ArabellaScott You are a prime example of why the country is in a mess- I can bet my bottom dollar you are horsey set, Home Counties , all very nice than you. What the heck does the governments education levels have to do with the price of chips. We have just moved away from living in Windsor- full of this type. The Eton boys were quite the most lack of common sense , stuck up and arrogant bunch of odd bods I've ever seen - I'm sure they looked fine on paper.

I saw that and wondered if I was supposed to doff my cap and say "gawd bless you sir for reminding of my betters"

Then I remembered how fucking hard I worked for my degrees and thought "fuck that,"

Voting currently at 73% to 27% in favour of Gary Lineker's stance. That should reflect the majority that will beat the Tories at the next election I reckon.

I wonder if the Tories will carry on pandering to racist fucks for the rest of their term?

Can someone post the tired old trope that MN is not representative of the UK population as a whole? That MN is more 'educated' than the general population? More articulate? More sensible? More humane? That secretly there is much more than 27% racist fuckers per 100 women?

If we were in the EU, we could have taken advantage of the "first safe country" provision in the Dublin agreement, but the people who voted for Brexit put paid to that

That's funny because this article on an info for migrants website seems to think that Germany is not having much success with Dublin agreement returns;

[In 2022] Germany tried to send back over 68,000 migrants to other EU countries under rules governed by the Dublin accords. The majority of those attempts failed.

in 2021, Germany issued 10,427 take back requests to Greece, but just one person was actually returned. Germany also issued 6,623 requests to Italy in 2021, and just 287 were taken back.

Voting is changeable on title. The thread I was on the other day was the opposite

But YouGov recently had strong support and somewhat support as the majority for:

Would you support or oppose banning migrants who come to the UK in small boats from ever re‑entering the UK, being able to settle permanently in the UK, and receiving British citizenship?

The editorial guidelines cover how impartiality of BBC might be put at risk in certain scenarios, in cases precisely like this one the guidelines suggest the risk was low

Outcome of recent complaint here;
BBC Complaints
Gary Lineker and Twitter October 2022

A reader of [Gary Lineker's Russian donors] tweet questioned whether it was consistent with the BBC’s requirements in relation to impartiality.

The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of impartiality and the Guidance on the use of social media by people working for the BBC.

Mr Lineker is one of the BBC’s highest profile stars and, although he does not work exclusively for the BBC, is perhaps best known for presenting Match of the Day on BBC One

In the ECU’s judgement Mr Lineker, though not involved in BBC journalism, therefore falls into the category of those for whom there is an “additional responsibility” as set out in the Guidance...

we found the tweet was in breach of the relevant Guidance and did not meet the BBC’s editorial standards on impartiality.
[Complaint] Upheld

The finding has been reported to the management of BBC Sport and discussed with Mr Lineker.

People don't take that MN vote seriously do they, I'm always contrary on that, I thought most were, its just a laugh.
