To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

Of course someone would if it wasn't working for the BBC, who have acted appallingly.

Don't try and make out that this is one man's crusade and he is easily replaced.

Money always talks in the end.

And he was paid a lot. It won’t be that hard.

Maybebabyno2 · 11/03/2023 09:12

It shouldn't matter whether you agree with his comments or not. He is entitled to his opinion and this cancel culture we have now is very concerning.

Snowsurprised · 11/03/2023 09:12

This is nothing to do with Qatar - that was commenting/ protesting about human rights in another country.

GL has spoken about politics in this country. Whether you agree with him or not the BBC and presenters are supposed to be impartial. That’s what we’re paying for.

His social media is very closely aligned with his job and he’s effectively published his impartiality. BBC have made the right decision.

Moonicorn · 11/03/2023 09:13

So far, according to my dd, the behaviour of these young men has been limited to following girls around town and waiting outside shops when they go in, and cat calls, verbal harrassment and taking photos. This in itself is unacceptable and I'm sure most people would agree.

As I said before - any other mumsnet thread and your daughter’s safety would be paramount and the posters would say the men should be arrested.

Not on this one 🤷🏼‍♀️ They won’t address your post either.

Lochroy · 11/03/2023 09:10

I'm saddened by posters' inability to separate how they feel about the immigration and asylum policy from the issue of whether or not Lineker should be allowed to air his views.

I'm horrified by how this thread has degenerated overnight into baseless flinging of opinions which are not in the slightest bit data based.

And the comment on rape was abhorrent.

I've got no issue having a reasoned debate but when people are so easily swayed by populist rhetoric, it's deeply disappointing,

It's no wonder the country is in the mess we're in.

PLEASE. Don't be sheep and follow what you're being spoon fed. Do some reading and find out what's really going on, what immigration and asylum routes the UK has, what is being proposed and the numbers and costs involved. Then let's have a debate.

This thread is the usual mess but if you do set up a new one with facts and measured look at costs etc I’d find it interesting.

Then where are tonight's substitute presenter, pundits and commentators?

LlynTegid · 11/03/2023 09:16

I don’t agree with the comments made by Gary Lineker but defend his being able to make them and be a sports presenter on the BBC.

It might take a bit longer afaik Linekar hasn’t been sacked yet. If he is they have a big salary to use

FlameGrilledSquirrel · 11/03/2023 09:17

You want racism? Keep shouting down legitimate concerns.

As for Lineker, he is the main host of a flagship programme for a supposedly impartial broadcaster. If the shoe was on the other foot, the left would be calling for his resignation just as quickly. Don't even pretend otherwise.

I also note that Lineker is an independent contractor rather than an employee of the BBC. Would that be for tax reasons? Just curious.

Dottymug · 11/03/2023 09:18

The government’s policy on refugees is a shambles- based on misinformation and lies and aimed solely at pleasing their fan base. We should all be speaking out about that- not leaving it to football commentators to do our dirty work for us.

AggieTop · 11/03/2023 09:18

@Lochroy - I am one that should apologise in that respect and it wasn't my intention to derail. I have been up v early and was just disappointed by the usual mud slinging and the word fascist being used so liberally.

I would also be interested in a sensible debate on the issue.

lollipoprainbow · 11/03/2023 09:18

@IClaudine do you pay extortionate rent or are you another Gary Linekar living in a very nice big house ????

I don't mean to suggest academia is the be all and end all. But Gary doesn't seem quite as well qualified as all the 2nd gen immigrants he's criticising.

What might take a bit longer? Finding a Suella sympathiser willing to take being branded a racist in football punditry? Yes, probably. Why do you think that might be?

Dottymug · 11/03/2023 09:20

@FlameGrilledSquirrel Have you read Alan Sugar’s tweets?? Why does he get away with those, I wonder?

lilacsinspring1244 · 11/03/2023 09:20

Lineker is an idiot who's been going rogue via his twitter for years. They've been looking for an excuse to sack him for years too.

Tryandlivemylifeandthensee · 11/03/2023 08:17

Thankyou
I live in Dover and we really really need help
Homes, schools, doctors you name it we have to queue for it and sometimes it’s just too late.

It really isn't just Dover @Tryandlivemylifeandthensee , it's everywhere.

I have friends in Suffolk, Somerset, the midlands, Hampshire and they all say pretty much the same. Getting a doctor's appointment is near impossible and my late DP died after waiting for hours for treatment in a Sussex A&E 2 years ago.

Here, there are huge delays in getting EHCPs, the schools here are oversubscribed and social housing is in such short supply that homeless families are sometimes sent to B&Bs 40 miles away. If you're not homeless, your chances of getting social housing are zero.

Don't fall for the lie that immigration is to blame for the problems caused by austerity-driven spending cuts.

And yet Gary Linekar still manages to be more compassionate and wiser than all of them, with their expensive educations.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 11/03/2023 09:21

Indeed. He didn't just go down to Dover and pick some some random of a boat . They were throughly vetted. Massive publicity stunt to burnish good ol' Gal's credentials

But isn't this a good thing to do publicity or not. Other high profile celebs have done this as well as ordinary people. I know a family who did this for Syrian refugee and although he is still with them it has not been easy for the family.
My point is there are far easier routes for GL to gain publicity.

Dymaxion · 11/03/2023 09:21

The Government doesn't want a free and open debate about immigration does it ? Too many actual facts and figures which might show them in a bad light ? too many questions that they might find uncomfortable answering ?

One of which is why do we have a small boat issue ? It is a very recent phenomenon so what has caused it ? What changed ? Could the Government have done anything differently to prevent it increasing as it has ?

Same up north too. I live hundreds of miles from anywhere that small boats might be landing. Still can't get a dentist though. There are literally no dentists taking on NHS patients within a large range of where I live.

Austerity. That's why.
