What size spoon do you use

to eat cereal?

Having a very important debate with the DCs, they think it is normal to use a teaspoon to eat cereal, I think most people use a dessert spoon. Dd1 says I'm just old and all the young people use the trendy teaspoon.

YABU - You must have a HUGE mouth, of course the dainty teaspoon is the way to go

YANBU - How can you fit ample cereal and milk on a teaspoon, only a dessert spoon will support a satisfying mouthful

NO! I only have one. I lost it once and found it in the depths of the bin and cried more than once during the search.

At least you now know what to look for, should the 'special spoon thief' ever visit you and deprive you of your 'precious'

Fantasticaldolphin · 10/03/2023 19:39

I use a teaspoon for cereal. I still eat it very quickly - I hate soggy cereal. I even use a teaspoon for soup.

Helenahandkart · 10/03/2023 19:40

My set of Habitat cutlery from about 30 years ago had teaspoons which are weirdly big and dessert spoons which are weirdly small. There is only a very slight size difference between them, and DH is always putting them in the wrong sections in the cutlery drawer.
The weirdly big teaspoon is perfect for cakes/mousses/puddings etc.
The weirdly small dessert spoon is perfect for cereal.
I only have one of each left now, and worry about the day when they too go the way of all things, for I cannot use normal sized spoons at all.

AlwaysLatte · 10/03/2023 19:41

My 15 year old would use a coal scuttle for his 4 weetabix if he could. No way a teaspoon!

Artemisty · 10/03/2023 19:43

I even use a dessert spoon for yoghurts.

Teaspoons are for stirring tea and measuring out teaspoon size portions. That's it.

Cereal..tsk.. honestly

thatheavyperson · 10/03/2023 19:44

Teaspoon every time!

Oblomov23 · 10/03/2023 19:47

A desert spoon. Why on earth would you use a teaspoon?

LavenderfortheBees · 10/03/2023 19:50

Dessert spoon for cereal and porridge. Soup spoon for soup. Teaspoon for yoghurt, ice cream and similar.

jizzlord · 10/03/2023 19:50

Soup spoon for cereal , teens eat soup with teaspoons Confused eldest eats everything else with a soup spoon inc roast dinners

QueSyrahSyrah · 10/03/2023 19:51

@WhichSpoon I buy the mega-tubs of yoghurt and dollop it into a bowl with granola, so no tiny pot related concerns regardless of spoon size.

Carpetmoth · 10/03/2023 19:55

I have a special spoon. It is actually a childs spoon and it has an engraving of a clown on the end of the handle. It is larger than teaspoons but not quite as big as a dessert one I use dessert spoons if staying elsewhere preferring ones which are slimmer. Never heard of fruit spoons but I will look them up.

Ah yes, I can see why you might use a dessert spoon in this example, otherwise @LavenderfortheBees has it spot on.

To make it last if you enjoy it. My 16 year old eats icecream with an espresso coffee spoon, it's about half the size of a teaspoon!

bussteward · 10/03/2023 19:59

Tiny espresso spoon for boiled eggs.
Teaspoon for small puddings such as Gu.
Normal spoon for cereal and soup, except at my parents’ house where they have soup spoons.
Fork for cake and fruit tart.
Serving spoon never, sounds painful.

Teaspoon for cereal sounds like a mad Liz Hurley diet trick.

saltwater1985 · 10/03/2023 20:00

We have some in between sized spoons. Large teaspoons. Use them for most things

twitterexile · 10/03/2023 20:11

I always use teaspoons for porridge, yoghurts, soup, puddings etc. Civilised. 😇

JaneJeffer · 10/03/2023 20:30

Wooden spoon

WaitingForSunnyDays · 10/03/2023 20:33

Dessert spoon for cornflakes or Frosties. Possibly a teaspoon for Rice Krispies or Coco-pops. So, I couldn't vote.

evtheria · 10/03/2023 20:34

The only time I'd use a teaspoon for food would be because I have one of those small yoghurt or dessert pots, which don't easily accommodate a regular spoon.

I use a soup spoon for cereal and, er, soup. Tablespoon or dessert spoon, whatever came out of drawer, for eating everything else.

saymynamex · 10/03/2023 20:34

@ShinyMe I have a special spoon I use for everything too. Sadly one of my DD thinks it's her special spoon too and uses it 😫

saymynamex · 10/03/2023 20:40

I have also discovered where I am maybe going wrong in cooking if I am using a standard spoon (presumably dessert) for measuring when I thought it was a tablespoon

SuperfastJellyfish · 10/03/2023 20:43

Cannot believe the amount of fully grown adults saying teaspoon! 🤯 I've never known anyone over the age of 5 use a teaspoon for cereal.

thaegumathteth · 10/03/2023 20:45

Teaspoon for everything but soup

FabFitFifties · 10/03/2023 20:46

Desert spoon - we don't have soup spoons but they work too. Teaspoon is ridiculous. I only use those to spoon mustard etc onto my plate. I drink hot water so no need for one there.

In the UK a teaspoon is 5ml, a dessertspoon is 10ml and a tablespoon is 15ml, so I guess it could make a difference if baking!
