What size spoon do you use

to eat cereal?

Having a very important debate with the DCs, they think it is normal to use a teaspoon to eat cereal, I think most people use a dessert spoon. Dd1 says I'm just old and all the young people use the trendy teaspoon.

YABU - You must have a HUGE mouth, of course the dainty teaspoon is the way to go

YANBU - How can you fit ample cereal and milk on a teaspoon, only a dessert spoon will support a satisfying mouthful

I mean, my kids used a teaspoon for cereal because they had small mouths. My eldest has moved on to a normal dessert spoon for cereal so he can eat as move food as possible as quickly as possible. He's a teenaged boy. It was inevitable.

Small people - small spoon.
Big people - big spoon.

I use a teaspoon for stirring tea, eating a yoghurt or small pudding.

Maybe so TECHNICALLY, but it's my Special Spoon and I will hear nothing to contradict that.

Well YES, I actually call them that too.

They live in the cutlery drawer, no-one else ever gets them out or uses them. (I live alone with occasional family and friends visiting)

But I'm lucky. I have 6 special spoons 😎😂

I only ever use a teaspoon for my mouth, whether that’s for desserts, soup or cereal.

I do this too!

WhichSpoon · 10/03/2023 19:16

@effiesgoldwig I have three teenagers, two them substantially bigger than I am, although to be fair, not around the waist, maybe the spoon is where I'm going wrong (it's not).

Is a dessert spoon a normal sized spoon? I don't know how I've got to this stage in my life without knowing this...

If so, yes, one of them!

MissSmiley · 10/03/2023 19:19

Definitely a fruit spoon but sometimes one of ny teen boys uses a soup spoon, no one uses teaspoons for cereal here

Yes, just your bog standard spoon, apparently twice the size of a teaspoon. A tablespoon is three times the size of a teaspoon. I have researched.

Dessert spoon obviously.

At work though we only have soup spoons and having to eat a yoghurt with a soup spoon unsettles me somehow, so I sometimes use a teaspoon instead.

I have a spoon I use for cereal and ice cream only, called my Special Spoon. Seriously. As a child, I got attached to it, and I took it with me when I left home. I've used it for 40+ years. It's about half way between a teaspoon and a desert spoon, but it's sort of elongated and pointy. Is that a bit weird of me? I don't care if it is, it's my special spoon.

I have one of these too! It sounds the same shape and has travelled with me since my childhood!

Now yoghurt, I actually do use a teaspoon, because they're tiny little pots and I fear I might splodge yoghurt everywhere if I attempted it with a bigger spoon, not sure if that makes me a hypocrite🤔

I have always considered a big spoon to be normal. However my husband uses a teaspoon.

NannyGythaOgg · 10/03/2023 19:24

Seems there are at least a few of us that swear by our 'Special Spoons' that actually bridge the gap in this debate

LadyJ2023 · 10/03/2023 19:26

Teaspoon lmao that wpuld take forever🤣 even my 4 kids eat with a dessert spoon

NO! I only have one. I lost it once and found it in the depths of the bin and cried more than once during the search.

overthinking23 · 10/03/2023 19:27

I've never known anyone to use a teaspoon to eat cereal that is madness 😂 would take forever to finish a bowl !!

Special Spoons are great for yoghurt pots because the pointy bit gets right into the corners.

NumberTheory · 10/03/2023 19:28

Teaspoon is too small for cereal, but I do find dessert spoons too big. When I was a kid we had a fancy cutlery set that had fruit spoons which were in between in size and just right. But I haven’t seen them around since I’ve started buying my own cutlery.

HareintheBluebells · 10/03/2023 19:28

Literally never heard of anyone using a teaspoon for cereal before, and I say that as someone who loves a teaspoon and always uses one for puddings.

thenightsky · 10/03/2023 19:28

I was brought up to use a teaspoon for cereal. I never realised how wrong this was until I left home at 18 and got laughed at by my housemates.

tabulahrasa · 10/03/2023 19:29

Teaspoon for things that absorb milk or it’s mixed in, like weetabix or porridge, dessert spoon for things that float in milk because you want a good ratio of milk to cereal and you don’t get enough milk with a teaspoon.

OnSecondThoughts · 10/03/2023 19:29

Sometimes teaspoon, sometimes desset spoon, depending on my mood, time of year, phase of Jupiter. If I've poured a bit too much milk in the bowl, I'll carefully lower the spoon in and drink the required number of spoonfuls of milk first until the right consistency is achieved.

Rinkydinkydoodle · 10/03/2023 19:30

DS14 eats cereal with a teaspoon, always has. He is the only person I’ve ever seen do it. Feel quite bad for laughing now…

Okunevo · 10/03/2023 19:31

Always use a teaspoon for muesli/porridge/icecream etc. DS eats icecream with a coffee spoon.

Clymene · 10/03/2023 19:33

I use a dessert spoon, my teenagers use a teaspoon. Which is why I end up shouting on weekday mornings Hmm

Zola1 · 10/03/2023 19:34

Im 31...tea spoon for literally everything except my actual dinner or soup.
