Embarrassed to be from England

hi

I’m English but live in Scotland. Me and my Scottish friends were just subject to three white, English men from Grantham / Skegness screaming about loving Margaret thatcher, how all weegies are junkies, and how they’d r* the Scottish and lesbian out of us and screaming about how they voted brexit to get rid of ‘jock’ bastards. This is in Scotland. Luckily for these three me and my friends do not tolerate such ridiculous behaviour and they had a quick lesson.

However, as a person unfortunate enough to have an English accent and have grown up In a neighbouring county it is highly embarrassing to have experienced this. I have made a home in Scotland, having experienced such homophobia and witnessing such ignorance and racism on a daily basis in my English hometown, whilst I am not claiming my new home to be perfect I feel far safer as a lesbian than at home, where it is unsafe to be visibly queer.

Ultimately, there are plenty of English people like me who are grateful for Scotland for being so welcoming and if racist and stupid individuals want to scream anti Scottish abuse they could refrain from living here and inflicting their presence upon everyone.

They actually screamed at us about their mothers being on mumsnet - so if anyone has a son aged 25-35 from Grantham / Skegness who is working away in glasgow, this is an fyi that they are abusing people in the street.

Some folk don't use the brain they were blessed with. Sorry you had this encounter. I don't understand people that have to abuse others like this. Scotland has its fair share o idiots its not just England. If I behaved like this when younger my mum would have cruixified me.

MajorCarolDanvers · 09/03/2023 04:04

3 idiots do not represent a an entire nation of people.

InsomniacAgain · 09/03/2023 04:08

Grantham... I had a night out there once. Real shit hole.

Unfortunately there are arseholes in every country and I'm sorry you came across some of "ours". I'm not embarrassed to be English though because thankfully the majority of us aren't like this and we're very tolerant.

Nimbostratus100 · 09/03/2023 04:09

Sorry this happened to you, but I don't think your experiences are related to being from England, more that this is a common experience worldwide, for anyone who moves over a local border.

Mutabiliss · 09/03/2023 04:18

Why on earth did they mention their mothers being on Mumsnet? What does that have to do with anything?

There are idiots everywhere unfortunately. I have a lesbian friend who was abused near her home in London recently, it's not just a small town thing.

PsychoHotSauce · 09/03/2023 04:21

I came across a term on SM the other day. It was "we don't claim him". In your case it means I might be English but he/they are not one of "ours" and that behaviour is disgusting.

Honestly though, I'm not sure why you put it down to being English rather than toxic male pack mentality. There's idiots in every demographic.

Mortimercat · 09/03/2023 04:37

I do not understand why you would be ashamed of being English because of three badly behaved people. If you follow that to its natural conclusion then every person in the world should or would be ashamed of their nationality.

I think you just wanted an anti English thread really, because you are otherwise being nonsensical.

FiveShelties · 09/03/2023 05:01

Jumped the shark there I think.

MrsLiu1981 · 09/03/2023 05:06

I left the UK in 2018 when I moved to Taiwan. I'm ashamed to call myself British, now even more than ever. I visited the UK a few weeks back and it was bloody awful.

Sockloon · 09/03/2023 05:11

Well I visited Scotland last year and my dh got punched in the face by some drunken Scottish bloke for no apparent reason as we walked down the street. Should all the Scottish be ashamed too? 🙄

Dibblydoodahdah · 09/03/2023 05:11

In my younger days I was verbally abused by some Scottish guys whilst on holiday in Spain. They made it clear they hated English people and the idiots you met sound like the English equivalent of them.

My mum was Scottish so I knew that they were not representative of all Scottish people just like you should know that these people are not representative of all English people.

GreenWheat · 09/03/2023 05:12

Had they been from, say, Ireland and shouting abuse at you, would you have been embarressed for the entire Irish nation? I think we tend to focus on our own nationality, but arseholes live everywhere unfortunately.

Tolpo · 09/03/2023 05:19

Why are you making this an English/Scottish thing? I live in SW England and have never experienced behaviour like you describe. My hometown is not unsafe for homosexuals or minorities or anyone. There's almost 56 million English people living vastly different lives OP. Research on Anglo-Scot differences show time and time again we do not differ on social attitudes, so this is settled as far as I'm concerned. It's biased to suggest otherwise.

If these men are even real, then they're excellent trolls because they spouted a lot of clichéd stuff designed to wind a stereotype of a Scot up, like loving Margaret Thatcher lol. I cannot recall a single instance where she's been brought up in conversation, let alone positively, which would be pretty unlikely.

You should have reported them to the police.

Riapia · 09/03/2023 05:26

From Grantham and Skegness eh.
I’m from Lincolnshire and can confirm that this is typical behaviour.
We dislike people from anywhere else.
In fact we don’t even like each other.

Quite.

Maireas · 09/03/2023 05:31

How odd.
They're 25-35 and pro Thatcher?
They will have no memories of her or her policies.

Maireas · 09/03/2023 05:34

"screamed at us about their mothers being on Mumsnet"
🤔

HistoryFanatic · 09/03/2023 05:36

What a load of rubbish.

Just an excuse for a anti English thread.

Beezknees · 09/03/2023 05:39

Why would you be embarrassed to be English because of the acts of a few idiots? Should Russian people be ashamed to be Russian because of their despicable leader?

I'm English and not embarrassed to be so. Other people's actions do not reflect on me. Same way I'm not embarrassed to be a woman because a small amount of women do horrible things.

Beezknees · 09/03/2023 05:40

I'm 33 and know nothing about Thatcher apart from she closed the pits. Thread sounds like a wind up.

Jumped the shark there I think.

Ain't that the truth.
Which in the OP is pretty hard to find.

ootb · 09/03/2023 05:46

Wouldn't it be fairly embarrassing for random young men to go on the street screaming about Mumsnet? Massive loss of street cred I would've thought. 😂

ScentOfAMemory · 09/03/2023 05:47

On the 1 in a trillion billion gazillion trillion chance this happened, maybe change your watering hole OP.
Even at your age I preferred not to drink with ignorant racist yobs.

Maireas · 09/03/2023 05:51

I'm quite enjoying the idea of drunken Englishmen shouting at Scots women that their mums are on Mumsnet.
I'm guessing they shouted "start a thread about this, many people may share your beliefs that those from England are the lowest of the low" 😂

User15953798 · 09/03/2023 05:54

Haha, shouted that their mothers are on MN, what a load of old twaddle
