Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

We all know the proposed new immigration policy won’t come to anything anyway - the human rights industry will make sure of that. How many people on this thread alone work for a ‘charity’ and have their noses stuffed inside the trough? Nearly everyone against it, I bet.

So drawing a salary for doing your job (but working for a non profit organising rather than a commercial company) is "having your house stuffed in the trough" is it?
So anyone with professional skills and expertise is expected to work for nothing if they work for a charity?

I don't think you quite understand what non profits are about. I'm a trustee of such an organisation, and the skills and expertise we require when appointing staff to manage a huge budget, deliver our services and safeguard our service users is huge. People with those skills can earn far more outside the sector, but still they're abused for taking a salary at all, 'because charity'. It's an entirely brainless stance to take.

Ugh. House= nose

Lol - I understand quite well, thanks. I managed to work out what you do for a living without any problem, didn’t I? See, I’m not entirely brainless.

Brussels also has a big problem with immigrants living in tents in freezing temperatures:
Brussels has a problem. A steadily growing asylum-seeker crisis is leaving people in the streets living in makeshift tents for months on end, as they wait to register within Belgium's overburdened immigration system.
As many as 250 migrants are lining the canal in the centre of the city, where they have set up camp in the freezing winter cold outside the country's arrival centre known as Le Petit Chateau – in English, The Little Castle.
Most of them, who come from Afghanistan, Syria and sub-Saharan Africa, do not even have easy access to food and clean showers, save for the few charities in Brussels that give out food, like Doctors Without Borders, which has set up a dozen mobile toilets and a sink with drinkable water nearby.
It is a far cry from what is normally described as the heart of the European Union. The EU's institutions are located just a few miles away in a district that can only be described as luxurious compared to the conditions in which these people are living.

I am impressed that you managed to work out what Braverman was talking about. I didn't bother trying today, because past experience tells me I usually fail.

That sounds racist to me. Watch your step.

IClaudine · 08/03/2023 07:27

That is terrible ToodlePipYouLongHairedGit. Those poor people. The article says the police have now dismantled the tents. I wonder where the refugees have gone to?

jgw1 · 08/03/2023 07:32

Springchicken75 · 08/03/2023 07:25

That sounds racist to me. Watch your step.

Is it also racist when I am confused by posters on here talking about illegal migrants when they mean perfectly legal asylum seekers?

Springchicken75 · 08/03/2023 07:38

Just stop, we see you. Labour are a bunch of racist misogynists. They have never even managed to have a leader that wasn’t male and white! You pretend to take the moral high road but it rings hollow.

We have run out of road on here thank god.

So you do think it is racist to point out when someone is calling a perfectly legal activity illegal.

The mind boggles.

For jgw:

Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?
Springchicken75 · 08/03/2023 07:47

Labours hidden racism and the issues well known with anti semitism is revolting.

IClaudine · 08/03/2023 07:50

To be serious, deliberately bandying around totally spurious claims of racism is really scraping through the bottom of the barrel to the murk that lurks beneath.

Braverman is often completely incoherent when attempting to explain Home Office policies that are equally completely incoherent.

Icandothattoo · 08/03/2023 07:50

@Springchicken75 Bravermann is well known for being terminally legally illiterate.
She's nothing more than a jumped up solicitor. This has been said by numerous legal experts.
Was asked yesterday if the proposed legislation was viable and couldn't answer. That's how competent she is.
Quite clear what @jgw1 meant. Stop the pear clutching accusations of racism.

Icandothattoo · 08/03/2023 07:52

@Springchicken75 'oooh look over there a racist'
Meanwhile same person spewing equally racist views.
Tone bloody deaf.

Well none of that excuses this government's vile actions or makes it any less racist.

I agree.

In 2019 7 MPs resigned from the Labour Party over antisemitism.

They were also investigated for antisemitism and an ex-leader banned from the party because of it.

They have bullied Rosie Duffield un-mercilessly because she sticks up for women's rights.

Tony Blair tried to sell of the NHS.

They don't exactly have the moral high ground.

God forbid we have a sensible discussion about immigration.
