Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

Yes it will be very quick, Labour has no plan whatsoever published or unpublished. The fact is what they intend to do is so unpalatable to the electorate they have decided to go silent on the issue.

How can it be unpalatable if it doesn’t exist?

lazycats · 07/03/2023 18:17

Because I might buy some houses there at some point, I haven’t decided.

You are disingenuous and probably needing to get a life if you think you deserve any opinion on another country’s immigration policies - especially coming from a country that ewe going to build walls along the border 😂

Agreed. You guys need to make Britain even more unattractive so no-one bothers. No-one can say the government isn’t trying on that front.

Are you really in the US? I thought you were joking. I admire the commitment to thinking about our issues.

Oh it does exist trust me. Labour know exactly what they will do with immigration.

You can hear the policy ringing through this thread loud and clear. They are certainly not going to own it at this delicate stage. The polls would plummet overnight if they did.

Oh, is the Labour shadow cabinet posting policy on this thread?

Apart from the bits they've said in speeches, in Parliament, etc, obviously.

However, that's a little different from what you said - when you referred to a 'free for all immigration policy' it suggested one that exists, rather than one that hasn't been fully published yet. A free for all policy is quite different from an absent one, after all.

It's understandable and understandable that this debate becomes almost impossible to have in a rational way when tribal hyperbole (on different sides) is such a huge feature, and takes precedence over accuracy.

Disclaimer: neither a Labour member nor a Labour voter.

No, it’s new to me that Americans in mansions want to steer our immigration policy. Touching really, that they are so invested.

You can steer Britain’s immigration policy by posting on mumsnet? Gosh, the country really is in trouble. 😵‍💫

I am really happy here thanks.

We don’t have to worry about our children being gunned down at the village school, nor have we a leader riddled with dementia and not able to string a sentence together so I would say we were #winning on balance.

So it exists, you know what's in it, and Yvette Cooper just lied to the House if Commons? And you know this based on some posts on Mumsnet.

i mean, full respect, those are some quite extraordinary skills.

Are you so desperately unhappy that this is all you can contribute? I can’t remember if you confirmed you were getting help or not?

We are a small island, already vastly overpopulated. The ideal population of Great Britain is about 3 million people and we currently have almost 100 million people living here. Something needed to be done.
