Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

What are you hoping to see? I assume you don’t vote Tory, whether you vote Labour or other

Whoever your party is what would you like? Boats to keep crossing or no

You don't like answering questions do you

You don't like answering questions do you

Eh?

I thought I asked you questions…

Are you not happy to say what you want to see? I don’t get why it’s contentious.

Maybe people will agree and so on

Viviennemary · 07/03/2023 19:25

The point is they get more favourable treatment here than they get in other countries that's why they keep coming. The truth is we sre a small country and can't have this entry for anybody who can over the channel.

I asked you why you assume I am a labour voter.

You asked me what I am hoping to see

How is that an answer to my question?

The UK is in the top 40th percentile of sizes for soverign nations. Bit unfair to call it small. Stop doing the UK down.

You will likely need both as safe routes won’t provide enough places unless unlimited, so the market will still exist

Except that's not true considering the vast, vast majority of asylum seekers never even attempt to come to the UK. So all you'd have to do is tie up the available spaces with the actual demand.

Of course there will always be attempts by criminals to enter countries illegally. That is as true for a Syrian as it is for a Brit or Spaniard. However, if you have established safe routes and a fair asylum system you would reduce the demand / attempts significantly, almost to the point where you would know that the only people trying to make an illegal crossing are criminals, which could then be dealt with (well not really seeing it's literally impossible to stop illegal entry into the UK).

If immigration wasn't such a great division tactic and froth inducing topic there would be zero focus on it from the government, much like they make next to no effort to stop drugs from getting into the country because the majority of the country don't give a fuck about that.

I asked you why you assume I am a labour voter.

You asked me what I am hoping to see

How is that an answer to my question?

Talk about dragging stuff out… I then changed to Labour or other party voter with same question. It really doesn’t matter I don’t care if it’s Labour or other party

The question is the same. What do you want to see happen?

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2023 19:35

In any case I assume there are some Labour voters on the thread so they could answer if relevant

My question remains as well, why do you assume I am a labour voter?

I am not insulted, just intrigued.

UNCHR is not impressed

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is profoundly concerned by the asylum bill introduced by the UK Government to the House of Commons today.

I didn’t direct it to you though. I didn’t think I’ll write this whilst aiming it at Duncin it was just a general question - which you picked up on.

I really do want to know what voters who vote Labour want to see but also happy to hear from non Tory non Labour

If you are voting Tory then you can also answer, maybe you want something else to what is proposed

lazycats · 07/03/2023 19:42

Looking forward to this not getting past the Lords in tact so Braverman can add them to her growing list of the leftwing blob ✊

Denied access to Britain's modern slavery system? What does this mean? That if you are a young person who has been trafficked and forced into, for example, sex work, the government will do nothing to help you?

It means you won't be deported so long as you've been legally enslaved.

We leave it there then.

What I want is the government to stop vilifying boat migrants and restore a functioning asylum system that provides safe routes into the UK.

This bill is horrifiying.

IClaudine · 07/03/2023 19:56

History will not look kindly on what is happening right now.

You are talking like it's a game of football. Your team, my team. Some of us vote for the best manifesto, past performance etc not a bloomin' knee jerk reaction 🙄

Things are not going to get easier as climate change advances. How we are and what we look back on might be quite different in feel soon ish

Why are people so bad at simply saying what they’d like to see

It’s not a truck question fgs

Pages of what they don’t like but on what would like to see in a manifesto and it’s all I can’t say…

Easy to fill threads with everything other than a simple response. Who knows maybe you’ll agree with others around a brilliant way forward
